About Joel Kilpack

I am the oldest boy of 12 children and have 4 children and 1 grand baby. I grew up in West Bountiful, Utah, where I learned to milk at the age of 5, and milked alone at the age of 7. Growing up as a family we made several trips, to Idaho to visit the Crossleys with the Potato harvest, and went fishing afterwards. The trips to Idaho as a young boy, is when I fell in love with Idaho. My parents also made trips to Missouri, and on occasion was able to go, when our milk cows had dried up. My parents ended up buying a farm in Missouri when I was 12, of which my parents still live there today, and Milk a cow together morning and night.

I have been Electrical Engineer for 26 years, and have done work all over the US as well as countries abroad. I currently work an engineer in Idaho, traveling as an engineer have basically stopped. Being able to work from home in 2006 and fairly close to an airport, I decided to buy this place in Idaho. In 2007 I added 3000 sqft to the home, and 2010 the older part of the house was remodeled, making it a great place for family gatherings. This was my primary residence until 2011, where I accepted a position with a large engineering firm out of state in the Kansas City Area, fairly close to the family farm. Missing the people and the lovely state of Idaho, I decided to move back in 2016. My housing manager and I both live close to this property, which is nice so I can also host reunions of my large family.

Joel Kilpack purchased this house in 2006

Why Joel Kilpack chose Idaho

This property is an ideal place for large family gatherings. It has two large kitchen / family rooms for entertaining large groups. We do several family reunions and average about 4 weddings/receptions a year.

What makes this house unique

It's great all year around from skiing and snowmobiling in the winter, hiking in the spring, Lava Hot Springs with natural hot pools open year round, white water tubing in the summer. Excellant hunting in the fall.

Good but not great

  • 2 of 5

Maybe we have been spoiled by other properties we have rented through VRBO but this was not our favorite. There are some great features. It had the nicest and biggest kitchen we have ever seen. That was great. And the outside is great for the most part. There is a huge lawn area with lots of trees. The one drawback outside was the pond that is advertised. It was covered with algae and a breeding ground for the many mosquitoes there. Take lots of bug repellant. The grandkids loved playing on the swings and lawn. The drawbacks were mostly the bedrooms. The master bedroom is huge and very nice with the biggest bed I've ever seen however, I felt like my wife and I were sleeping is separate rooms. Also if you are modest at all, there are no window coverings in the master bath which is on ground level and open to the outside. Be prepared to wait for the hot water in the master shower. It is nice when it comes but it took almost 5 minutes. Most of our kids complained that the beds were too hard and my wife thought the master bed was too hard but I guess that is a matter of taste. Also, the Jacuzzi tub in the master bedroom had a sign that it was out of order. We had gone up to check out the place about 3 weeks before and the same sign was there then so I'm not sure the Jacuzzi will be available. They advertise 7 bedrooms but 2 of them are in a basement that is not very good. One of our sons and his family slept down there the first night but got sleeping bags and slept in the game room upstairs after that. And they like to camp out in tents. Another thing that bothered us was that the owner showed up four of the five days we were there. He came once to replace a TV in the game room upstairs which was understandable. But he didn't bring the right cords so he came back for over an hour the next night. Then he came back the next day to get his glasses which he had left and finally on the last day he came to get his bow out of the master bedroom closet. It seemed like he was checking up on us all the time. Finally, I think the cleaning deposit is actually a cleaning fee. We have been home for 2 weeks and have neither received a refund or an explanation. There were many good comments in the guest book there so there are many who liked it it just wasn't our favorite. We can say though that we had a great time in Lava Hot Springs, swimming, taking a hayride with dinner, playing golf and exploring.

Amazing!!!

  • 5 of 5

The Lava Family Inn was a wonderful place to stay for our family reunion. The home is beautiful with enough space to not feel crowded. The beds were comfortable to sleep in. The home was clean and tidy. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, cooking utensils, plates, cups, silverware, crock pots, and etc.

Beautiful & functional

  • 4 of 5

All our guests were very impressed w/ the landscape, the vistas & the house itself. We enjoyed being able to spend relaxed time w/ friends & family in the living rooms & kitchen areas and having enough room for everyone to retreat to their own space when wanted. We had a little problem w/ BBQ regulator not working properly, but we were able to use the ovens. We also had trouble w/ upstairs TV & game consoles working properly.

We had a family reunion and had 20 people. This house was the perfect spot. Short drive to Lava Hot Springs. The house was quiet and secluded, nicely furnished and plenty of room! We would definitely recommend it to all of our family and friends! Thanks for a great place to make some lasting memories!
