About Susan MacIntosh
Our home is the product of who we are; an interior designer and a Realtor who wants to be an architect. Featured in Winston Salem Magazine, this 3400 s.f. (website hidden) is part log cabin and part cutting edge hi tech. Relaxing, peaceful, serene. We are in the middle of the woods yet ten minutes from downtown and a mile and a half from Wake Forest University. All mod cons including WiFi, cable, lots of parking. We built this house to relax in. We live here when not accommodating guests. We have enjoyed our experience staying in others homes around the world and thought we would share our place with fellow travelers. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!
Susan MacIntosh purchased this House in 1993
Why Susan MacIntosh chose Winston-Salem
The house and location are unique in that we are 7-8 minutes from Winston Salem's excellent and vibrant downtown and yet once you drive down the driveway you feel a million miles from its hustle and bustle.
What makes this House unique
We are located in a neighborhood called Lake of the Woods where the elite of Winston Salem built their hunting cabins in the 1930's. Our house was built as a one room log cabin by the Hanes family, of Hanes Hosiery. Many, many iterations later it is a structure that wows everyone who visits. Nearby are many restaurants, Indian, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, and several very good mid to upper level American. One note, the house has several level changes and may not be suitable for some guests. My 86 year old mother-in-law does fine but wanted to make you aware.

Beautiful property in Great Location
This is such a unique house that is in a great location in Winston-Salem. Perfect for larger groups who want to explore the city or spend a night just hanging out at the house. Loved our stay!
Unique, Comfortable, and Amazing
Perfect place for a group to stay. The house is comfortable and fun. The outdoor living area was ideal for hanging out as a group. Those who appreciate design will fall in love with this house. It is by far the most unique and interesting home in which I've stayed.
Thanksgiving In Winston' Salem
I met Susan, the home owner by chance, on day we arrived, She was very gracious and eager to please us during our stay.
The pictures depicted the home accurately and it was very relaxing to stay there,
Beds were comfortable and house was clean.
Great for family get togethers and or a gathering of friends.
A pool would be the icing on the cake.!
Beautiful space with issues
Yes, this house has excellent bones . It is well suited to large gatherings and entertaining . The esthetic is charming and has a lovely bohemian vibe. The beds are comfortable . We also rented a cottage on the property and it was pristine .
However, this is mitigated by poor maintance and a tremendous amount of personal clutter. Closets, refrigerator, surfaces and cupboards were filled with the owners possessions so despite ample space we had to live out of our suitcases. Dusty, dirty porches demanded cleaning though we could do little to improve the mildewed seat cushions . The grill was filthy . Towels were sour . Essentially , we felt the owners packed an ovenite bag and left the premises exactly as they lived in it. The owners granted our request for a 12pm checkout but returned unexpectedly at 10:30 causing guests enjoying coffee in their Pjs to flee to pack ASAP. A little extra care would go a long way to making this an exceptional VRBO rental.
Amazing Wedding Weekend!
I rented the house to host myself and wedding guests coming from California for my daughter's wedding. I couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. The location is private and tucked into the woods offering a beautiful view from every room and an enchanting and special experience for all guests. One evening I hosted other folks from out of town for a barbecue. The large outdoor covered deck/patio was an ideal spot, with the gorgeous surrounding woods, and beautiful birds/humming birds enjoying the feeders and an amazing outdoor stereo system. Everyone who stayed/visited was charmed by the location and unique details of the decor and architecture. Every room was leveraged to the fullest - gathering in the kitchen for coffee and email catch-up; dining area for group meals; den area for relaxing at the end of the day in front a fire (the house has a phenomenal fireplace!); soaking in the large tub in the master bath while looking out at the woods; and playing darts and pool. To maximize your appreciation of this house - make sure to enjoy every room and tour the surrounding grounds as all provide a unique vantage point of the wonderful architectural and decorative details. It was a wonderful retreat which made an amazing week that much more special. I look forward to the opportunity to stay again!
Amazing house! Even better than the pics...
Thank you again for sharing your home with me! I concur with all the praise in the reviews already listed on VRBO about your home. Instead of re-enforcing all that same praise with the same info, I would like to try to capture the unique and lovely vibe of your home for this review, but I'm sure to fall short as words alone won't do it justice. It is, all at once, as if you've put it together over time with great thought and care, and yet it remains completely organic in its flow. I love how the architecture takes advantage of the incredible forest-like views from every room. It is impressive how you have all the necessary modern conveniences (even heated floors!) while it is still so comfortable and charming with a distinct nod to the coolest mid-century vintage finds I've ever seen in one place. Making a Harry Potter reference in your guest book, I likened it to a much more upscale (yet just as magical) version of the Weasley's fictional home, The Burrow. Hopefully, you are HP fans and will understand the intended major complement of that comparison. As planned, my son's roommates at Wake Forest invited over many friends to a pre-party before the annual Shag on the Mag event on campus Friday night. That party was a hit, with your house being the star of the evening! The students and their dates were having so much fun that they had to force themselves leave in time to shag dance! Many returned Saturday to hangout and study and then enjoyed a home-cooked meal with us Saturday night. I understand that several of the students already told their parents about your place, many of whom have already been online trying to book the house for future Wake events. Lastly, my son said to me that he intends to mimic your home as a model/blueprint for the perfect place in which to raise his future family! I believe that might be the highest praise of all. Thank you for being willing to share your home with others. We had such a great time enjoying it and each other's company in it. I only hope I can find it available again some time. I have a feeling it will be even harder to find it available to book now! :)

Three bedrooms, two on the main level and one up plus three full baths make for an easy share situation for family or couples. Overflow sleeping arrangements can be made on couches, etc, for several more folks. You could cram 13 people in if several are children and don't mind sleeping on a couch.
