We chose laughter – sometimes humor is simply the healthier option than shaking your head in disbelief. So, just to help you (and everyone else reading this) be a little more prepared next time, here’s a brief guide on How to rate properly – for beginners: 👉 You rate what you booked, not what you imagined. 👉 If the listing says no en-suite bathrooms and no fitness room, that means – surprise! – there are no en-suite bathrooms and no fitness room. 👉 And when the house is exactly as described, that usually deserves 5 out of 5 – not “almost perfect, but my imagination ran wild.” To illustrate, dear Chris: That’s like booking a trip to Paris, having a great time, being warmly welcomed, finding a fridge full of free drinks – and then leaving a review saying: “Lovely trip, but minus one point because I didn’t see the Colosseum or the Pantheon.” And then there is one small but very important detail that your future hosts should know: You allowed another person to stay overnight in our house without informing or asking us. That’s generally called violating the host’s house rules – or, in your rating language: not entirely perfect, but quite bold indeed. A sincere piece of advice, dear Chris: If you’re looking for something specific next time – whether it’s a fitness room, en-suite bathrooms, or a house where unannounced guests are welcome – just book exactly that. It will save you confusion, your hosts unnecessary frustration, and the readers of your reviews from secondhand embarrassment. Hello Alan, thank you very much for staying with us – we’re happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay overall. Regarding your comment that it was “a little too crowded with tourists,” we’d just like to clarify one thing: Our accommodation is located in a very quiet residential villa area – no through traffic, at the end of a cul-de-sac. The neighborhood is mostly inhabited by permanent residents, many villas are unoccupied during the summer months, and the nearest hotel is over a kilometer away. It’s hard to imagine a quieter place at the Algarve. Please don’t get us wrong – your opinion is absolutely valid. We simply find it a bit unfortunate when a general impression of the region during peak season leads to a lower rating for the accommodation itself. Therefore, we kindly ask you to base your review solely on the accommodation, not on the seasonal tourism situation of the Algarve. We always do our best to provide a spotless, high-quality, and relaxing environment – and we’re happy that most of our guests recognize and appreciate this.
