'Due Colonne' of Cremona; an Undiscovered Italian Town

Bedrooms 1
Space 600 sq. ft.
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Condo, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Due Colonne is located on the corso, the shopping district in downtown Cremona. Steps from one of the most beautiful piazza in Italy, you will see the Torrazzo, the tallest brick bell tower in all of Europe.

Nestled on a cobble-stoned street, above a panetteria (bread store), this is a place for those that have already experienced Italy’s well-known destinations and want to live in a classic undiscovered Italian town away from the crowds of tourists.

If you saw the film The Red Violin, the opening scenes were filmed in Cremona, the “birth place of the violin. Visit the Cremonese (the 1721 Stradivari located in the Commune), check out the Stradivari museum, stroll the corso, enjoy the opera at the Ponchielli, or simply sit and sip a cappuccino in the piazza.

Due Colonne is in a renovated (2005) building in the historic district of Cremona. Comfortably sleeping four, this one-bedroom, smoke-free loft with cathedral ceilings is steps from an urban grocery store, a fresh fish market, wonderful restaurants, and all of the gelataria that you will need.

Your apartment in Cremona is centrally located to many other wonderful destinations in northern Italy: In about one hour you can tour: Milano, Verona, Parma, Mantova, Lago di Garda, Castell’Arquato (a quaint medieval town), Wine regions, The Alps and others.

In about two hours you can reach: Lago di Como and Bellagio, Torino (home of the 2006 Winter Olympics), Bologna, The Seas (Adriatic and Ligure) among other sites. Venice is only three and a half hours away!

Due Colonne is well situated for those coming without a car. Interntional flights arrive at Milan Malpensa, which is one hour by (very frequent) bus to Milan Central Station, from which trains take about 75 minutes to reach Cremona.

Cremona itself has an excellent urban transport system, and from the train station Milan, Piacenza, Fidenza, Crema, Lodi, Parma, Mantua and Brescia can be reached directly in about an hour or under, with Modena, Pavia, Bergamo and Bolgna taking somewhat longer. Many other places can be reached by train with connections.

If you plan to arrive by car, please research and understand the laws regarding driving in Italy and obey all signs that limit the traffic in the historic downtown. The sign may say, Zona Traffico Limitato. If you pass on a street with this sign, a photo of the license plate will be taken and you will eventually receive a fine in the mail. Once you do arrive at Due Colonne, my parents will show you where you can park nearby for free.

See the links section for two car rental agencies within walking distance from the condo.

About The Owner

Mark and I have long thought about buying property in Italy and we finally purchased this wonderful condo in 2005. We always wanted to by a place that we would be proud to live in and we wanted it to be in the historic district of downtown Cremona.

The Owner purchased this condo in 2005

Why The Owner chose Lombardy

I grew up in Cremona and moved abroad when I was 24 years old. After I left Cremona I realized what a wonderful city it is and how it offers the best of the Italian way of life, 'la dolce vita'. My family continues to live in Cremona and my parents are the ones who greet our guests upon arrival.

What makes this condo unique

We enjoy slow strolls through the 'corso', beautiful architecture, wonderful Italian food, rhythms of Italian life, outdoor markets, history everywhere you look, waking up to the sound of the bells of the 'Torrazzo', cappuccino, espresso, and gelato, beautiful store windows with the latest fashion design, smells of freshly baked breads, ...

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Marco,

As a child my husband played the violin and always wanted to hear the sound

of a Stradivari, so Cremona was on our list to visit.

What wonderful surprises awaited us. We were warmly received by your

parents who showed us around your spotlessly clean, centrally located

The kitchen, while small, was fully equipped for us to cook dinner every night.

The bedroom, which is in the loft, is a good size, has a firm mattress, nice

linens and excellent bedside lighting. The bathroom has a shower which is

the best we have ever had in an Italian apartment. The full sized clothes

washing machine was more than we expected. The livingroom, too, was very

comfortable and contained a good selection of travel information and books.

The information book you provided your guests was detailed, thorough and

essential to live comfortable both in the apartment and the town itself.

We had planned to visit other cities during our week but with all the

information you and the tourist board offered us, we spent all our time in

It is a wonderful civilized town that has magnificent churches, piazzas,

beautiful parks, museums, upscale shopping and great street markets. The

town is alive with people who enjoy life and all Cremona has to offer.

For anyone interested in hearing the Stradivari being played by a maestro, a

visit to the audition is a lifetime experience.

Between the comfort of the apartment and the charm of the town, we had a

memorable week.

Kindest regards

Great hosts, great apartment, great town!

Due Colonne is indeed a wonderful place to stay. We were there for a week in May. The photos on the website represent the apartment perfectly, and Marco and his parents were enthusiastic hosts and very easy to deal with. Like others, we really appreciated the washing machine! The building was very quiet; there was some occasional noise from the bar at the corner when we had the windows open in the evening.

We had a memorable meal (very reasonably priced, we thought) at Hosteria 700 in Piazza Gallina and enjoyed a pizza at Pomorodo, just across the street from the apartment. Good lunch places are the cafeteria 44 Piatti at Via Torriani 11 (thanks, Lonely Planet) and Piadineria on Via Platina (Rough Guide). Another piadineria is near the west end of Corso Vittoria Emanuele. Our favorite prosecco stop was Gelateria Pierrot (great gelato, too!). Also check out Gelateria Principe at the east end of Viale Trento e Trieste. A third good one is Casa del Gelato, Corso V. Emanuele 59/61.

We were lucky to hear a concert at Teatro Ponchielli: Kurt Masur conducting an orchestra of young Italian conservatory-trained musicians who were fabulous. The audience even demanded an encore. Hearing the "Cremonese" Stradivarius played was also a treat.

On our seventh trip to Italy, we finally made it to Cremona and are so glad we did! We would love to return.

Where do you live?

There is a very good reason everyone gives this place five stars

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for several days this month and it is just a wonderful place to stay. The apartment is clean, newly redecorated with all the things you would need for a stay including excellent wifi, a great bed and a very good washing machine. Parking is free and less than a ten minute walk from the apartment. The apartment is literally around the corner from the city center and everything worth seeing in Cremona is an easy walk from the apartment. The city itself is wonderful with much to see and do and has many good places to eat. I would recommend day trips to Mantova and Brescia with are also good towns to explore.

Great apartment and excellent location.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time in Marco's loft. It's a beautiful apartment in a great neighborhood, right in the heart of Cremona, which we fell in love with. We stayed for 10 days and we felt right at home the whole time.

We had some glitches with the WIFI upon our arrival but Marco's brother, Cristiano, came to the rescue and all was resolved by the next business day. Cremona has free WIFI throughout the city, so we weren't terribly inconvenienced. The upstart to that was meeting Cristiano and his friend Mauro. They introduced us to people in Cremona, including Carlos Roberts, a violin maker, with whom we shared aperitivi after having been invited into his studio. We also met Mauro again later in the week for dinner with his friends Cristina and Marcello. It was a lot of fun and Cremona became quite the magical experience for Sue and me.

Excellent downtown location, has everything to establish a litlle home away from home

I rented Marco's 'Due Colonne' for a 5-week stay in Cremona in January/February 2016 for business. I'm extremely happy that I was able to avoid being stuck in a hotel room for that long. Instead, I had my own personal space to come home to at the end of a long day at work. The apartment has a small but fully functional kitchen that let me make the occasional meal, which makes a nice change from eating out all the time as one does in a hotel. The layout with the vaulted ceiling and a loft bed upstairs makes the apartment feel quite spacious, and having a laundry machine was really helpful. Its located just a block from the famous cathedral and from Stradivari Square, with lots of options nearby for restaurants and cafe's, as well as many small specialty shops. There is also a 24-7 supermarket across the street, which was extremely convenient. The farmer's market in the square next door cannot be beat for fresh veggies and fruits. Unfortunately, the weather was pretty miserable during my stay in mid-winter, but I know from prior visits during the better seasons how pleasant Cremona is when you can just stroll about to take in the sights, enjoy the famous Violin Museum, and sit down for a glass of local wine at one of the outdoor terraces.

The apartment was spotless when I arrived, and is clearly well maintained. Marco was extremely helpful with all arrangements, and I want to especially thank his parents, who bailed me out on a rainy Friday night when I had misplaced my keys. Grazie mille! I would definitely recommend 'Due Colonne' for people interested in paying a visit to Cremona.

A wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

I was there for about 10 days over the end of the year holidays. I am from Italy and I know Cremona very well. I chose this place because is in a perfect location in the historical Center. the apartment was just perfect. Very nice and quiet, yet right in the center of the city. Marco's parents met me at the apartment with the keys. They are wonderful. The apartment if fully equipped with anything needed. I would go back anytime.

True Italian Experience!

  • 5 of 5

Due Colonne was a wonderful home. It was exactly as described...bright, clean, well maintained and comfortable. It was short walk to everything in Cremona, and the bakery in the same building is perfect for morning rolls. A grocery store is a block away with everything you need! Wifi is available and actually worked! There is no TV, but that was never missed. Washing machine was handy. Highly recommended! We will return one day, no doubt!
