About this property
Caribou Meadows by Historic Kilcher Family Homestead in Alaska The Last Frontier
Caribou Meadows is in a beautifully private but accessible setting, it has new and antique furniture throughout, along with full furnishings to make your visit enjoyable and rewarding. Both the main bathroom and master bathroom have been completely retiled and remodelled with Caribou motif, while maintaining original post and beam style. The well system has been improved with a two filter system and is fresh and pure. This cabin is immediately adjacent to the owners family homestead (the Kilcher homestead). It was hand built on the site of one of Homer’s original homesteads, by a young woodsman as he was starting a family in Homer. His craftsmanship shows in the original wood structure details throughout the house. With three bedrooms, a sleeping loft to allow for larger parties, two bathrooms, and a modern kitchen, but with more than a trace of Old World and homestead styling, this is a unique and memorable vacation spot. The wildlife in the immediate area is abundant, with moose, eagles, sandhill cranes, porcupines and many others. The cabin is sited in a beautiful meadow, surrounded by forest with room to roam. From the cabin, you can see beautiful Kachemak Bay and the mountains across the way.
The cabin provides modern amenities, has ample space and is a beautiful spot for a family to stretch out and use as a base of operations to explore both near and far. This cabin sits alone on a 10 acre plot 11 miles out East End road but has ready access and is close to the amenities at Fritz Creek (mail, gas, groceries, world-class restaurant and wines and spirits). In the area and beautiful town of Homer is halibut and salmon fishing, the Pratt Museum, galleries, restaurants, groceries, horse back and ATV tours, kayaking, glacier and bear viewing, air tours and much, much more.
It is also within walking distance of a historic site of rich significance, where I grew up with my father, an early Alaskan State Senator and mother a writer, singer and poet and my siblings, in the austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin - the Kilcher Homestead. Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres in which to hike through to the beach via one of only three beach access sites outside of Homer.

About the host
Hosted by Catkin Kilcher Burton

My family homesteaded Alaska in the late 30's and early 40's. I was born in Basel, Switzerland while my originally Swiss family was touring and my father was lecturing about pioneer life in Alaska. I was raised on the homestead adjacent to this property. I went off to college and joined the Marine Corps. After 31 years of commissioned service, I returned to Alaska and am the Trustee for the Kilcher Family Homestead, 620 acres in a conservation easement. I am a volunteer with the Alaska Humanities Forum and the Civilian Advisory Board to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. I manage four active vacation rentals and love showing the homestead to our guests. One of these days, I hope my children and their children will raise their families here near our beloved homestead.
Why they chose this property
This property was built on the site of one of the old homesteads (Bartman) which was purchased by my two brothers (Atz and Otto) and myself. It is adjacent to the historic Kilcher homestead with a living museum, room to roam, and one of three access points to the beach. Surrounded by meadows and forests, the sense of splendid isolation is hard to beat. Try to yodel and you'll hear the forest echoing your yodels back.
What makes this property unique
Within walking distance of the Kilcher Homestead, it offers privacy, but with ready access to fine dining, shopping, kayaking, horse back riding, ATV rides, art, theater, fishing and all the other amazing things Homer has to offer. See the Homer Chamber of Commerce website to see how full of life Homer is. There's a homestead-style (read rustic!) sauna which can be used if you're so inclined.
