The Pump House is a wonderful place from which to explore this part of Ireland. The cottage is very comfortable - the loft is especially fine for sipping morning coffee- and the Reeves provide the welcoming essentials, from fresh flowers to fresh farm eggs, which was a lifesaver since we arrived very late to the cottage. The king sized bed is the perfect place to collapse into after a long day of touring, while the heat warmed up the cottage enough to take away the early autumn chill. The Pump House is on a working farm, so there are animals around, but being greeted by friendly dogs is always the best way to begin a day!
The owners, Claudia and James, are the perfect hosts. They will arrange for taxi rides, even giving my husband a ride down to Clancy's for the weekly Thursday night Irish music session and are good resources on where to go in the area. Athy, Ireland is perfectly situated near major roads and trains, so getting around is fairly easy.
I would highly recommend the Pump House . Our stay there was simply a lot of fun!
We needed a place to stay while visiting family in the area and the Pump House cottage was perfect. It's quiet and peaceful, and very comfortable. The kids loved the bed in the loft area !
The owners do a fantastic job of making guests welcome. Loved the fresh scones and jam set out on the table when we got there ! Little touches like that really make a difference.
We heartily recommend the cottage and look forward to staying there again some time
Rustic Charm for a quiet vacation
We had a great time in Ireland. We stayed for a week in The Pump House which had everything we needed. We were greeted warmly every time we returned to the cottage by two gorgeous dogs, a cat, and sometimes a donkey. It was great fun! The cottage was warm and cosy. It would not really have been suitable for more than two people though. The loft sofa bed is kind of difficult to access for anyone who doesn't like ladders and heights. But it if is just for two people it is a good choice if you want to be in the Kildare area. We visited Clonmel, Cashel, Waterford, Kilkenny, Wicklow Mountains, Maynooth and Dublin while we were there. The roads and driving in Ireland are great, and being fairly central meant we could maximise our time visiting places. Athy has a useful mix of shops and if it is raining, nearby Carlow has two great multiscreen cinemas.
Very cozy and relaxing!
My husband and I stayed here for about 5 days this summer. We found it to be a very lovely cottage - a perfect place to relax and explore southeastern Ireland. Athy is conveniently located within an easy drive of Kilkenny, Carlow, and Castlecomer. The cottage is inviting, comfortable, and features all of the essentials. James and Claudia are very nice and helpful as well. We would love to visit again and definitely would recommend this to fellow travelers!
The Pump House Athy Co. Kildare
My wife and I stayed here with our 2 young children whilst attending a family wedding close by. Claudia, James and their children could not have been anymore welcoming and ensured our stay was perfect. Everything upon arrival was explained thorougly and we were told only to ask for any support. Claudia kindly arranged a hair appointment for my wife on the morning of the wedding.
The grounds around the cottage are stunning with huge ancient trees and a nearby river and fishing rods were left in the cottage porch for guest use. Hopefully get to use them next time.
The nearby town of Athy with everything you need is only a 10 -15 walk away so visiting restaurants and pubs without the car definitely is not an issue.
We certainly would like to return again.
This property is so unique! It was wonderful having horses and a donkey right outside our door. We love the dogs too. The cottage was very clean and nicely decorated. We had everything we needed to be comfortable. We will return. Claudia and James, thank you.
Athy is a heritage town in south Kildare, situated on the intersection of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal. It is located 67km southwest of Dublin and has good access routes to Dublin airport and to the seaports of Dublin, Dun Laoghaire (83km) and Rosslare (110km). It also has good train and bus connections and is conveniently located within an hour's driving of Dublin and many of the Midlands main towns: Kildare, Naas, Newbridge, Carlow, Portaloise, Kilkenny, Tullamore and Athlone. County Kildare is the centre of the horse breeding and training industry in Ireland and many of the major stud farms and training establishments are located in the county.
Other Activities: Walking, rowing, canoeing
Golf: GOLF - three of Ireland's best courses are located within a 30-45 minute drive from our cottage: The K Club (venue for the Ryder Cup 2006 Matches), the PGA National Ireland and Carton House. In the town and close by, Athy Golf Club and Kilkea Golf Club offer a fair test of golf to all categories of players.
