About Amy McLaughlin & Shawn Means

I'm Amy and my husband's name is Shawn. We were both born and raised in Charleston, WV, where we still live and we both work for the same non-profit organization. Charleston is only about one hour from Fayetteville, so lucky for us, the best vacation spot in West Virginia is close by.

Lafayette Flats began with our simple desire to get out of town. We love our home in Charleston's East End but we really like to travel. We found out early in our relationship that we travel together well and we love to do it as often as we can. We love taking weekend driving trips to places like Asheville, Columbus, Charlotte and Louisville, and we've been all over our home state of West Virginia.

Five years ago we drove across the country on Route 66 and last fall we toured Northern California - Yosemite, Redwoods, Wine Country - we loved it all. But big trips are few and far between, so we satisfy our travelin' Jones by making the drive up to Fayetteville as often as we can.

Maybe it's the Bacon Jam at The Secret Sandwich Society or the breathtaking views from Long Point Trail, but something keeps us coming back again and again. We looked for a small apartment in Fayetteville that we could rent, just to have a home base where we could escape to on weekends but found nothing suitable. After months of searching we decided to take on a project where we could build our own space.

We looked a several opportunities, but the one that caught our eye was the historic building on the corner of Court Street and Wiseman Avenue - known as 'The Malcolm Building.' This building was built in 1906 to house The Bank of Fayette and is on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Fayetteville's Historic District. Our home in Charleston is in a 100 year-old townhouse community, so I guess it's safe to say that we are drawn to old buildings.

We spent the summer and fall of 2013 renovating the building - doing much of the work ourselves. We are eager to show off our space!

Why Amy McLaughlin & Shawn Means chose Fayetteville

Our love for Fayetteville and the New River Gorge area caused us to something we had never done before: We bought and renovated this historic cut stone building, transforming the top two floors into four apartment style vacation rentals. Corten is one of four flats in the building.

Since it is on the Historic Registry, we were very intentional in our renovation plan to leave the building intact as much as possible. Originally built to be an office building, each floor only had one common bathroom and the heating in the building was hot water radiators. Since it was built before electricity, the electrical system was hodgepodge of makeshift circuits and ancient fuse boxes.

Along with theses negatives, though, were a lot of positives: The beautiful original woodwork is still there and the fortress-like construction means that the building is very sturdy. The beautiful cut-stone exterior looks exactly like it did when it was built a century ago. Our renovation plans preserved the woodwork and the basic configuration of the building.

Installing a new electrical system and the plumbing necessary to support two additional bathrooms and kitchens was done in such a way as not to change the character of the building. Fire codes made us make some alterations to doorways, but overall the building looks as it has for the last century.

In spite of the ancient spaces of this small town former bank building, the interior design is chic, modern and urban. We want to offer visitors to Fayetteville something completely different from the campsites, cabins and large vacation home rentals available in the area. Furnished with all the comforts of home and decorated to the nines with local original art and many unique design elements, this is not your typical vacation rental!

We want you to more than just feel at home - we want you to wish that you lived here!

What makes this apartment unique

Most lodging in the New River Gorge area is campsites, cabins or oversized vacation homes in remote settings. Lafayette Flats offers a small town main street lodging experience with walkable access to unique locally owned restaurants, shops and activities.

The decor, with an emphasis on local original art, provides visitors with a rich cultural experience. Travelers interested in history will enjoy staying in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the stunning view of the Fayette County Courthouse.

Even though Lafayette Flats sits on main street downtown, it still is walking distance from National Park trail heads and all of the outdoor adventure that the New River Gorge provides.

Notes:
It is one of our goals to introduce Lafayette Flats visitors to a new way to think about West Virginia. We want to surprise our guests with the real West Virginia and nothing will make us happier than if they walk away with an impression that is different from the prejudices they might have held when they arrived. We have tried to do this through the design, art and literature of each flat. We think that Fayetteville itself helps to illustrate this new narrative. Here is a place that through the years has attracted the attention of many people with its amazing beauty and rich supply of natural resources. But instead of repeating our state's history, where those resources are scooped up and taken away on a train, the New River Gorge has been able to remain beautifully intact and now welcomes people to come here to enjoy it.

Charming, comfortable and aesthetic

  • 5 of 5

I've been wanting to stay at the Lafayette Flats for a while now as I visit Fayetteville pretty regularly to see my son. I brought a friend with me this time which spurred me to book this. What a simply delightful experience! The detail in this flat is incredible from each pillow and throw selected to all of the stunning artwork everywhere. It was incredibly comfortable, so much so that my friend and I joked we felt like staying in instead of going out just to enjoy the ambience. Every small detail has been considered and anyone would enjoy a stay in these flats. I cannot wait to come back!

Classy, comfortable, and charming

  • 5 of 5

We were blown away by the Fayetteville Flats. Amy and Shawn have done an amazing job of creating a wonderful atmosphere at the Flats. The layout, decor, and attention to detail is very impressive. On top of the Flat's layout is the amount of exposure you get to West Virginia history and art. You feel the artistry as soon as you walk into the building and that style continues on into every room in the Flats.

The location of the Flats in Fayeteville is ideal: withing walking distance of many unique eating spots (we really loved the Cathedral Cafe), close to the New River Gorge, and a short drive to the "mall" area (while it's a short drive away,, the mall feels light years away culturally from where the Flats are located).

We would go back in a heart beat.

The flat was simple, beautifully appointed and cozy. WV was incredible...and staying in the Corten Flat was the cherry on top. Smooth reservation, easy entry and check out. This will be our go-to place for all of our future visits.

Centrally located, easily accessible, and memorable

  • 5 of 5

The stay was solid. Everything felt new. The walls and floors were solid despite it being an old historical building. The owners took time to consider a lot of details to make the space efficient and spacious. Also the bed is of great quality and comfort. There is a full kitchen, however, I suppose there could be a tad more counter space. It's sufficient but don't expect to be roasting up a huge meal with ease. There is a dish rack under the sink for drying dishes...I wasn't sure if it was intended to be used under there or pulled out to the island countertop as there isn't space next to the sink for that. Another issue was that the AC was loud when it kicks on. Another thing is that there could be a bigger dresser. These are very minor issues. At least there is a strong newish AC system and something much more than a kitchenette and a small tall boy dresser. Water pressure is good. Everything else is great.

Corbin was immaculate and appointed so well. Bedding was very comfortable. Everything we needed to make our stay successful was there. We especially enjoyed the art and loved the canary picture. Should you stay in the Corbin flat look at it closely. Wonderful work!

We will return to Fayetteville again and look forward to staying at Lafayette Flats again. Our hosts,Amy and Shawn, went the extra mile and made our stay a memorable one. Thanks Amy and Shawn

Elegant sophistication in a tiny town

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved the Fayetteville flats! The are exquisite. Who woulda thought there was such an elegant flat in such a tiny town. The woodwork is beautiful. The decorations, artwork, and furnishings, are all gorgeous. The appliances, the bathroom, the shower, all top notch. We especially loved that the flat is stocked with wonderful, books, movies, and games--many of which relate to the local area and culture. The flat is in easy walking distance to a number of fantastic restaurants (our favorite was "The Station") and a 10 minute drive from the Gorge. The beauty and convenience of this place exceeded all expectations, I can't say enough good things about it or recommend it highly enough if you are visiting New River Gorge. If you want to rough it in the wilderness during the day but stay in five-star comfort at night, this is the place for you.
