This furnished one bedroom, one bath apartment is located in the middle of downtown Decorah. The Nest provides easy access to all of Decorah’s wonderful downtown shops and restaurants and there are many local parks within walking or biking distance. The west facing family area is a large open room with beautiful high ceilings and a wonderful view of the County Courthouse. The Nest was redone with the homey feel of Magpie Coffeehouse in mind. The floors are the original over 100 year old fir floors, exposed brick, and a comfortable couch tub. The dine-in kitchen makes it easy to prepare dinner and for entertaining during your visit. The bedroom has a comfortable queen bed and large lit closet. In addition to the bedroom, there are two twin beds available built loft style in the main room. We stayed at the Nest while visiting our daughter in Decorah. When I walked in I was amazed how spacious and stylish it was and how comfortable. The full kitchen allowed us to have breakfast together with her friends with lots of room to visit. Loved how close it was to lovely Decorah scenic Main Street, very walkable, yet, little noise. The Nest was very clean and well kept, other reviewers mentioned cigarette smell, we had no problems with that.
I would highly recommend the Nest to anyone visiting Decorah. If you don't need the amenities of a hotel, you will get more room, great style, and a full beautiful kitchen for your stay.
We loved our stay at The Nest and the location was fantastic! I would recommend this location to others.
We stayed at The Nest for 2 nights/3 days recently as part of a weekend getaway to Decorah. We have an infant and appreciated the spacious loft as well as the washer/dryer in the unit. Our other option in town was Hotel Winneshiek, and we feel we got much more space and bang for our buck at The Nest - it is essentially an apartment/loft. It is very tastefully decorated and has everything you might need (kitchen supplies, shower supplies, laundry, etc). The location was key for us - we walked to many of the shops and other sights in town - and it is perfectly located for such activities. You are within walking distance to the grocery store, town center, coffee shops, restaurants and boutique shopping. The kitchen is nice if you want to cook a few meals to cut down on eating out costs. The space is very spacious and has a trendy historic vibe - and there is a bonus porch on the back. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in!
Another added bonus is the $20 credit to Magpie Coffeehouse. We had the best breakfast I've had in a long time there and their coffee and other baked goods are also to die for. We used the credit on our last morning in town and are so glad we did. Very nice added amenity - and they also left Magpie coffee in the kitchen for our use. So delicious!
I would say there are only two drawbacks - the back entrance is a bit scary as far as walking across the roof of the business below to get to the back door. It's not unsafe necessarily, but there are no railings. The 3-4 steps that lead up to the back entrance aren't secured to the unit at all, so that could be improved safety-wise potentially. A safer alternative would be to use the front stairs entrance, but we drove several places and primarily used the back entrance because of the parking spot location. The other drawback is while we didn't experience this until the morning that we left, there is some cigarette smoke odor. We think there must be a tenant next to The Nest or underneath who smokes - we didn't smell it at all until the morning we left so perhaps they were away for the weekend. Then it was pretty evident near the bathroom/bedroom doorways. Not so much in the rest of the unit. Just something to note for anyone with a sensitivity.
The Nest is the only place we'd stay if we would return to Decorah! Highly recommended.
We really liked the apartment, "The Nest", in downtown Decorah, Iowa. The apartment is ULTRA clean, well decorated, larger than we thought and has all the items listed plus more. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom has a huge amount of towels and a great washer and dryer, with soap and dryer sheets--thanks!. The two single beds, in the narrow loft, are nice but the ladder is not easy to climb, a little slant would help. The kitchen was well stocked, dishes were nice, appliances are top notch and everything worked very well. The parking spot is interesting, off street and useable. The man who owns the BBQ shop below The Nest is very nice and his BBQ looked amazing, as he was grilling next to the parking spot.
We had only two issues, #1) the smoke smell, as foretold in a previous review, really did get to be a little much in The Nest. We eventually had to open the windows, back door and turn on the fan to get the air circulating in order to get the odor out. It has NOTHING to do with the owner of this apartment, we believe the apartment across the hall has smokers in it. The stairway, to the apartment, was thick with the smell of smoke and eventually it made its way into The Nest. We stayed for 4 days and it was worse as the days progressed. I think it was due to actually using the apartment. Not much can be done, just be aware of it. And #2) The speakers/volume on the TV did not work on all channels. We sent a text to the manager and she tried to help but we eventually had to keep turning the TV off and back on for sound. Now I am very willing to say that IT COULD HAVE TOTALLY BEEN MY FAULT, just thought I would write it up as it made watching movies impossible. The apartment is GREAT!!
The manager of this apartment was VERY helpful, prompt in getting back to us and very nice. There was also another bonus to renting this apartment, Magpie Coffee House!!! The manager of the apartment recommended we go to Magpie---FABULOUS---a 2 min walk and you get the best Chai Tea in the world, fabulous baked goods and wonderfully fresh lunch options. I went back on Monday, as it is closed on Sundays, and had breakfast--the baked oatmeal--WONDERFUL---I might drive the 3:45 hours back just to go to Magpie! The manager also gave us several other local eating options, ideas for excursions and was extremely helpful!
Decorah is a wonderful little town, many things to do and see and also a lovely place to relax. Rent "The Nest"---it is Great!
We were looking for a four day hideaway and did we ever find a great one. "The Nest" is a perfect rental for you whether you just need a great place to stay or, like us, you are looking for a cozy place to get away from it all.
The location is very convenient. Everything you need, groceries, shopping, fabulous restaurant food (you must eat at Rubaiyat), a $20 dollar credit at Magpie Coffeehouse (don't neglect this), & great walking paths is within walking distance. We did not drive our car the entire stay.
The fully furnished kitchen is so convenient. The Nest is quiet and so very comfortable. The bed is wonderful and the apartment is just simply cozy .
Steps are a given, so don't consider it if you can't do 20-25 steps easily. Neighbors are not the most inviting but don't let that influence your decision to stay at The Nest. A smoker next door and a restaurant below.
We would and, most likely, will stay here again. A great place at a reasonable price. MUCH beter than a hotel!
DO IT. We don't think you will be dissapointed!"
We had a wonderful stay at The Nest! The apartment is beautiful and within walking distance of good food and drinks!! Strong cigarette smoke smell in the hall and you can actually smell it in the apartment. Didn't really bother us but if you are sensitive to smoke, you may want to keep that in mind. We would definitely stay again!!
