Bungalow-on-the-Green is a beautiful, sustainably designed residence located in the accessible Lower Rattlesnake neighborhood and sandwiched between Mount Jumbo and Waterworks Hill—each premier hiking and mountain biking areas—only a block from locally renowned Greenough Park.*
A mere ten minutes walking to The University of Montana and Missoula’s vibrant downtown, this house is in a perfect location and is constructed for the outdoor enthusiast or weekend adventurer. This three-bedroom plus bungalow is ideal for families or couples who wish to enjoy Missoula’s outstanding recreational opportunities and cultural activities. Built seven years ago, the house was constructed with a geothermal heat pump system--providing radiant floor heat in the cooler months and central air conditioning all throughout the house in those hot summer months--, on-demand hot water, brand new energy-efficient appliances, beautiful decorative concrete kitchen counter tops, water-saving showers, dishwater, and toilets, and zero-scape native landscaping, which together make this lovely residence a model for sustainable living.
The exterior includes a large expanse of patio with two decks that are ideal for outdoor relaxation and a bar-be-cue grill for outside cooking. Since the owners are “car-free” the house also features a specially designed 12-stall, lockable bike rack for the biking enthusiast; it is perfect for Missoula's burgeoning bicycle-friendly infrastructure and the easily accessible Rattlesnake valley's mountain bike trails. Enjoy a day of hiking or bicycling, a night out on Missoula’s vibrant downtown, or an early evening of flyfishing on the Clark Fork River, each within a short walk of the bungalow!
This contemporary residence was architecturally designed to blend into the traditional 1920s 'bungalow' neighborhood while the interior of the house is ultra-modern--a blend of concrete floors, Persian area rugs, local art, a steel cable stair railing, and vibrant colors--combining comfort with elegance. Sleeping up to 8 people, the bungalow easily accommodates families and groups. It is also child friendly (with a playground directly across the street at Gregory Park) and has a practical, efficient and open floor plan that promotes a cozy, yet nicely flowing atmosphere. The upper level includes a master bedroom with a queen-size bed and a large walk-in closet, a bathroom with a tiled shower, large storage cabinet and pedestal sink and a guest bedroom with both a queen and a twin bed. This room is ideal for children. The main level consists of a guest room with a full-sized bed, a large living room space with sectional couch, a second bathroom that includes a tub/shower, a dining room, a galley kitchen and a bonus room with a queen-sized futon/couch.
Amenities, such as high-quality linens for each bed, fluffy towels in the bathrooms and soap and shampoo for showers and baths are provided. The bonus room includes HDTV with cable and a DVD player (with a collection of classic DVDs), and a stereo with the owner's favorite CDs. High-speed wireless Internet service is also provided.
The Rattlesnake is one of Missoula’s most convenient and desirable neighborhoods. Bungalow-on-the-Green is a short distance from blue-ribbon trout fishing, tubing, rafting, and kayaking on the Clark Fork River, dozens of miles of mountain bike, hiking, and Nordic skiing trails and is in close proximity to the wonderful shops, groceries, restaurants, museums, libraries, pubs and festival grounds of downtown Missoula. It is also a mere one-hundred yards from the I-90 Van Buren Interchange, so getting to and from the airport, as well as all highways in and out of the city, is a breeze. Do you enjoy coming to Grizzly football and basketball games? It is a mere ten minute walk to Washington-Grizzly Stadium and the Adams Center. Bungalow-on-the-Green is a truly wonderful house located in the most accessible spot in all of Missoula!
I grew up in Missoula and I am a fifth-generation Montanan (my great grandfather founded Shelby, Montana). I am currently a geography professor at the University of Montana and I am also a freelance writer.
My wife Virginia (also a fifth generation Montanan from little Highwood, Montana) is the Director of Travel Initiates at the Adventure Cycling Association--a recreational bicycle touring association located here in Missoula. We built and remodeled four houses in this Lower Rattlesnake neighborhood, one of which is Bungalow-on-the-Green. I am very knowledgeable in sustainable building construction and alternative transportation and we have lived in this neighborhood without an automobile for nearly three years. The location of our Bungalow is ideal for our car-free lifestyle!
Thomas Sullivan purchased this bungalow in 2008
We have lived in this same block in the Rattlesnake since 1988. We love Missoula and the wonderful recreational activities it has to offer. Since being here for most of our lives, we are a great resource for those wishing to explore all aspects of our region--whether looking for recreational opportunities, interested in local politics, participating in a variety of cultural activities, visiting the best tourist attractions, or wishing to know where that awesome ice cream stand is located (Big Dipper!)--and we are readily available in dispersing this valuable information to anyone who will listen. I compete in running, triathlon and biking events and both Virginia and I are bike tour enthusiasts, traveling somewhere by bike in the U.S. or other places in the World each year. We are also recreation advocates; we mountain bike, hike, Nordic ski, run, and backpack--always from our front porch!--so we know many of the local business owners and shops that cater to these types of activities. We also frequent the coffee houses, donut shops, restaurants, and brew pubs of downtown Missoula where we visit with friends and acquaintances who we know from our years living here, so if looking for the great places to eat and socialize, we are quite knowledgeable in this aspect of Missoula's daily life.
Our home is simple and sustainable and matches our outdoor-recreation lifestyle.

We stayed three nights visiting our son who is a student at UofM. The house is well stocked and cared for. It is very clean and comfortable. It was an easy walk to the college football game. We would happily rent this home again.
We (2 couples) had a wonderful time at this house in Missoula. It is in great condition, very clean and well kept. The kitchen is well equipped and modern and the beds were comfortable. We enjoyed the extra tv room and movies that the owner provided. The location was perfect as we could walk to town and to the university easily. Overall, a great place to stay!
Our family of 7 adults enjoyed our stay here. Convenient location. Plenty of room for all of us. Nice amenities, kitchen well stocked. Nice deck. Pretty view of front yard from kitchen window. Tom and Virginia were great hosts. We will stay here again if possible.
Thanks for letting us share your wonderful home! The location was convenient to everything that Missoula has to offer. The home is beautiful and we enjoyed the outside space. Missoula is definitely one of our favorite places and we would stay here again in a heartbeat.
The other reviews of this house are spot on. This house was clearly updated by someone who really cared. The appliances are top notch, there are beautiful metalwork banisters on the stairs, and even the landscaping is wonderful, charming and very welcoming. So much thought went in to this house that even every light-switch is logically placed. We never had to reach very far to find the right switch for a light. Bravo!
Would love to stay again.
What a fantastic home away from home for two moms, one gramma, and six grandloves to meet from SD, CO, and MT! Beautifully designed with overflowing rose filled trellises as soon as you drive up. We were actually encouraged to pick fresh strawberries from their well groomed garden patch! Great patio area, park right across the street, paved trails close by, very close to Big Dipper ice cream! Absolutely all the amenities anyone would hope for. Thank you, Tom and Ginny...very impressed!
