Overview

About the property

500 sq. foot Studio with beautiful view. 1 bedroom, bath, and kitchenette.

Feel like you’re part of the treetops in this Scandinavian-styled studio of knotty pine and skylights — only a mile from Historic Downtown Stillwater. Bike/Hike the new trail just steps from your door. (Nordic ski in the winter.) Furnished with top-of-the-line king bed, wifi, and cable TV! Enjoy coffee in the nicely equipped kitchenette as songbirds sing their morning serenades. Dine-in or stroll into Stillwater for its wide variety of restaurants. You’re surrounded by gardens here with indigenous plants carefully cultivated by the owner. Your own fire pit, too, so bring s’mores fixings for a quiet evening nestled in the beauty of the St. Croix River Valley. This upper level studio was originally a craftsman’s workshop for making harps. Ideal for writing retreats, cycling weekends or romantic getaways. The office is on the first level, so if you need work space while your honey is watching a movie, you can both have privacy.

About Liz Nelson

In 1998, I almost purchased the small house across the street. I remember standing in the driveway, pointing at my current home, and saying to the realtor, 'That is the house I want.' Seven years later, I bought it. I think you will find the feeling of 'yesteryear' and see the remnants of the company town this neighborhood has to offer. There is a Bohemian feel with several artists living within walking distance. Several years ago, I remodeled with the desire to appeal to travelers. I am a traveler who enjoys a more provincial experience to a complete touristy experience. If you are similar, I think you will find this in Dutchtown. Additionally, I have been in Stillwater for 23 years (unbelievable!). I would love to serve as your personal consigliere.

Liz Nelson purchased this studio in 2005

Why Liz Nelson chose Metro

Natural light pours in from the six skylights featured in the studio. Being up there when it rains gives you the feeling of being in a birdhouse. Stillwater is the most visited place in Minnesota, second only to the Mall of America. BTW, the Mall of America could definitely be a day trip given it is only 32 miles from here. The one mile walk or bike to Historic Downtown Stillwater gives you the feeling of being a local. Wineries and brewies are popping up everywhere which could also make for a fun day trip. The little towns up and down the St. Croix River Valley could provide enough activity for a week and then some. Marine on St. Croix to the North boosts itself as being the Birth Place of Minnesota, although so does Stillwater:) Further north is Taylor's Falls and St. Croix Falls, both having individual charm and worth checking out. Down river is the quaint village of Afton were you could easily laze away a day. Further south you will find Prescott which is at the confluence of the St. Croix River and Minnesota river. Lunch and music at Muddy Water's Salon is always worth the drive. Of course, the twin cities is only about a 30 minute drive and has everything a large city has to offer. Fine dining, museums, and urban flair is abundant - yes, even in the winter!

What makes this studio unique

The charm of this architecturally designed home is it's setting. It is located on one of the steepest hills in Stillwater which adds to the allure. The large windows help bring the outside into the living space. I was raised on a hobby farm so I find that digging in the dirt is not only in my blood, but therapy. Slowly, I have introduced many native plants into my gardens. I'm amazed by how many pollinators; such as hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, I see around since making the transition to natives. Additionally, one of my beekeeper friends has a hive on the back hillside. I thought I should mention this in case you are allergic to bees. The bees are not aggressive and tend to their business of pollinating and are fun to have around, not to mention healthy for the environment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Beautiful place. Very well crafted. Everything you need for a romantic one night stay to a one week staycation. The owner, Liz, is a super nice owner and made sure our stay was fantastic!

Wonderful studio apartment!

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I had a terrific time at the Dutchtown Retreat. It was a convenient location, easy to find, but nestled in a quiet neighborhood. The apartment was well-furnished and stocked for our stay, with every amenity that we needed. We watched a thunderstorm through the skylights one night, and loved the view of treetops and beautiful grounds through the windows. An extra perk is the direct access to the river bike path which we used to meander downtown for breakfast on the weekend. Liz was a fantastic hostess, answering questions and welcoming us to her beautiful property.

A perfect Hideaway!

  • 5 of 5

This property is gorgeous! Extremely well designed and maintained. Everything detail is perfect. We were looking for a quiet space close to the amenities of the Stillwater area, but private. The Dutchtown Retreat is well situated. My husband took advantage of the bike trails while I prepared for my meetings. We are trying to create another reason to return to the Stillwater area, so we can stay again in this charming hideaway.

Stunning

  • 5 of 5

The pictures on the website are gorgeous but to actually be there is outstanding. Liz is a wonderful hostess and provides everything you need. The yard is gorgeous and the room is one I would love to live in permanently but we all must leave at some point and go home. Thanks Liz for sharing your wonderful home.

Stillwater Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and spent a wonderful week in Liz's above garage studio while attending a nearby family event. The studio was probably one of the most comfortable settings we have ever stayed in and my wife and I travel a lot. It is roomy, light and quiet with a lot of very cool construction details (Liz was the designer). The bike path across the street made it very easy to walk/bike to the center of Stillwater or go the opposite direction for a leisurely bike ride into the surrounding county side. Liz provided excellent local travel information which enhanced our stay. We hope to return to this part of the world someday and Liz's studio would definitely be our base.

Located in what locals call Dutchtown which is on the north side of Stillwater. Dutchtown was considered the wrong side of the tracks back in the day, only being annexed officially into Stillwater in 2005. This property is adjacent to Brown's Creek Bike Trail. Walk the track to downtown Stillwater or hop on your bike and see where you will end up.
