About rich and micki naughton

Richard and Michelle Naughton live in Marshalltown IA. Semi-retired after operating ServiceMaster of Marshalltown Inc. Two of our three sons still work the business.

rich and micki naughton purchased this house in 2014

Why rich and micki naughton chose Iowa

We feel blessed to have found this property. What an awesome place to be able to use and share with others. We never thought that sitting on a deck doing nothing but watching the river flow by and seeing all the wildlife that comes with it, i.e., Eagles, pelicans, seagulls, geese, etc. could be so intriguing and relaxing.

What makes this house unique

We love the fact that the river is only 50' away. It is unusual to find a place on the river that doesn't have either railroad tracks or a road between the house and the river. It is a quiet well kept neighborhood, friendly neighbors and close to larger cities if needed. Sitting on the deck whether it be day or night, watching the wildlife or the reflection of the Navoo temple on the river or a view of the stars!!!

This was a great place to spend a weekend in Fort Madison. My husbands family grew up on the Mississippi, and fun to have the great view - of the widest part of the river, looking at the Morman Temple, and watching thre snow geese one the river. My family were with the Santa Fe Railroad, so it was special to hear the trains and see the coal ready to go on the barges of the river. This is not a granite and hardwood floors home, but very spacious and their value and view are what makes it special.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments! The more time that we spend there the more we appreciate having it to use. We do plan on installing tile in the kitchen and dining room this year and expanding the deck. You are welcome back any time!!

Exactly what we were looking for for our visit to Nauvoo

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful view of Nauvoo from across the Mississippi river. Place was clean and comfortable. Older home without some modern amenities such as a dishwasher and central air conditioning, but not a problem for us visiting in May. Family of 7 all adult children. Plenty of room for games at the dining room table or downstairs in the lower split-level floor. We enjoyed the quiet and relaxing atmosphere with the rabbits and geese chicks that visit the backyard daily. It's a 10-15 min drive to Keokuk for shopping and restaurants so if you prefer being away from town a bit in a very quiet small neighborhood, this will be fine. Very nice barbecue grill and three kayaks that were a lot of fun. Portable fire pit was great for a nightly family camp fire with smores. Plenty of yard chairs. We'd definitely stay there again if going back. Only hic-up was last day the internet went out in the house. Router lights were on (main bedroom) but the wifi name was no longer visible in the viewable list on our devices so we spend our last day without internet which was convenient for getting everyone off their devices but inconvenient to check-in for our flight out that night. Other than that, it was a perfect family vacation to Nauvoo. Also the 25-30 min drive to Nauvoo from the house is beautiful along the Illinois side of the river. Not really an inconvenience if you like a woodland drive.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review, it's so neat to share the home with others and have people appreciate it as we do. I went down the same day and replaced the modem / router from Mediacom so it shouldn't be a problem for a long time. You're welcome back anytime, maybe you can spend more time and explore the area . There is so many cool places to visit with a lot of history. Please note - all areas have window air conditioners and there are fans and ceiling fans in the bedrooms.

A home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My siblings and I and spouses, plus a few of our adult kids spent the weekend, March 31-April 2.

We had a very enjoyable time. The highlight, of course, was the view of the Mississippi sunrise and the numerous bird wildlife. The home is very nice and we appreciated the little extra touches that made it even more like home. So much is provided and the needed items are well stocked. The owners were a pleasure and willing to help in any and every way. We were very comfortable there and would like to return. The neighborhood is pleasant and the neighbors are friendly too. The location is quiet and relaxing.

Relaxing time along the river.

  • 4 of 5

Our group of four stayed September 22-25 of 2016. We thought the home had a large amount of room. I enjoyed the privacy of being downstairs, while the others spent their time upstairs. We especially enjoyed our morning and evenings on the patio/deck. The view of the river, along with various birds you see, was very relaxing. Being close to the city, while still enjoying the outdoors was great. Look forward to a trip in the area, with this home as our stay, in the coming years.

Convenient location with some serious drawbacks

  • 3 of 5

We come to SE Iowa regularly to visit family, but find there is very little in the area to rent. This house was ideally located in Montrose, close to Keokuk, Ft. Madison and other Lee County locations we needed to visit.

There was plenty of room for family to stay and visit, and the place has most of the amenities we were looking for: 2+ baths, 3+ bedrooms, wifi, and view. The view of the Mississippi is fabulous. We were not kayakers, but appreciated that there were two kayaks and a canoe available. Wish there had been life jackets available.

We had everything anyone could wish to use in the house, save a dishwasher. Water temp and pressure were great in bathrooms, Good wifi signal, and it was great to have a washer and dryer.

Serious drawbacks were: VERY noisy trains at all hours (waking us despite earplugs), lots of bugs indoors - fleas or bedubgs in the bedrooms that bit us all over when we were home. Perhaps you need to blea bomb if you have had pets there or get rid of bedbugs. Not all lights outdoors functioned and wiring/switches were funky in the house. There was not an adequate supply of toilet paper or paper towels. The house was clean, except for the fleas. Some things to consider:

- There is a dangerous dip from the driveway to the housedoor path. Mark with bright tape?

- Provide shampoo and soap in showers.

- provide a laundry basket

- provide garbage can for lint in laundry area,

- provide paper napkins

- have an easier key entry. Very tricky

- we bought more hangers, but consider making sure there are enough.

- Provide a handrail for the front door steps

- Provide an actual house manual, and not a handwritten note on the fridge. We had no idea how some things worked in the house or where to find things, such as the gas grill.

- Guidebooks for birds and other flora and fauna in the area, along with history books, for example, not just brochures.

Hope these suggestions help you.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments and suggestions. We are very sorry that you experienced some negative things at our house. Our housekeeper has cleaned several times since your stay and has not seen any evidence of bugs. We also spoke with the last renter and they said they hadn't had any problems. That being said, we will have pest control inspect to make sure all is taken care of. Additional note..two separate companies inspected, there were no bed bugs or fleas. The home was treated for spiders and is on a continued schedule for treatment. Regarding some the other issues, there are life jackets in the garage and we are addressing the other issues that you had mentioned at this time. Again, thank you for staying with us and welcome you back in the future!!

There is a great meat market, Dave's in Montrose.

" " Fish market in Niota, IL right after crossing the river from Ft. Madison.

All major shopping at Keokuk , Ft Madison, and Burlington.

The Villages of Van Buren offer a lot of history, museums, etc. There is the Dutchman's store in Cantril that we always enjoy going to, it has every thing from bolts of cloth, groceries, meats, bulk everything.

There are many brochures at the house and the local chambers of commerce have web sites.
