About the property

3 Bed Split Level, 2 Bath Right On the River.

Spectacular 160 degree view of the Mighty Mississippi! Enjoy sipping a cup of coffee from the deck or in the kitchen nook watching the river meander by. Quiet neighborhood, located in between Ft. Madison and Keokuk. Historic Navoo, Illinois is just 1.5 mi. across the river or 20 minutes away by car along a beautiful scenic route!! Awesome place to relax, refresh and enjoy the beauty of the river valley.

Fishing poles are available to wet a line and see what the river may give up for your next dinner.

One thing very interesting to do is watching the barges lock through at Keokuk.

About rich and micki naughton

Richard and Michelle Naughton live in Marshalltown IA. Retired after operating ServiceMaster of Marshalltown Inc. for 30 yrs. Two of our three sons still work the business.

rich and micki naughton purchased this house in 2014

Why rich and micki naughton chose Montrose

We feel blessed to have found this property. What an awesome place to be able to use and share with others. We never thought that sitting on a deck doing nothing but watching the river flow by and seeing all the wildlife that comes with it, i.e., Eagles, pelicans, seagulls, geese, etc. could be so intriguing and relaxing.

What makes this house unique

We love the fact that the river is only 50' away. It is unusual to find a place on the river that doesn't have either railroad tracks or a road between the house and the river. It is a quiet well kept neighborhood, friendly neighbors and close to larger cities if needed. Sitting on the deck whether it be day or night, watching the wildlife or the reflection of the Navoo temple on the river or a view of the stars!!!

Eagles pass by frequently, in the winter when the river is frozen there can be hundreds of eagles below the lock and dam at Keokuk and Burlington.

3 daughters and five grandchildren stayed there

  • 5 of 5

My daughters enjoyed the house so much. Sleeping arrangements for each of them and their children was perfect. They made use of the three kayaks and enjoyed it very much, did not get a chance to get the canoe out maybe next time, they were able to BBQ and sit and enjoy river and see the fireworks show that Montrose put on. Very enjoyable 5 nights staying here over the 4th of July week.

Owner's Response: Thanks!!!! You are so lucky to have seen the Independence day celebrations from there, we've only been there one time for the 4th! We feel blessed to have found this home. I know it's not a word but we never realized that it could be so "unboring" to sit and enjoy the river and wildlife from the deck doing NOTHING!

Great location and great view!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here. The house was warm when we arrived but the A/C worked great and cooled things down very well. The owners were really great to work with. There was a problem with the main shower so we were unable to use it at first but while we were out sightseeing they got it taken care of and we didn't have any problems with it at all. The house could use some updates but we would recommend it to anyone!

Wonderful Rural location

  • 4 of 5

The home had plenty of space, and a beautiful view of the Mississippi River. A little far from our destination of Nauvoo. 35-40 minutes, but best value for the size. The owners were so accomadating, informative, and easily accessible, that I felt like I was staying with family.

Exactly what we were looking for for our visit to Nauvoo

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful view of Nauvoo from across the Mississippi river. Place was clean and comfortable. Older home without some modern amenities such as a dishwasher and central air conditioning, but not a problem for us visiting in May. Family of 7 all adult children. Plenty of room for games at the dining room table or downstairs in the lower split-level floor. We enjoyed the quiet and relaxing atmosphere with the rabbits and geese chicks that visit the backyard daily. It's a 10-15 min drive to Keokuk for shopping and restaurants so if you prefer being away from town a bit in a very quiet small neighborhood, this will be fine. Very nice barbecue grill and three kayaks that were a lot of fun. Portable fire pit was great for a nightly family camp fire with smores. Plenty of yard chairs. We'd definitely stay there again if going back. Only hic-up was last day the internet went out in the house. Router lights were on (main bedroom) but the wifi name was no longer visible in the viewable list on our devices so we spend our last day without internet which was convenient for getting everyone off their devices but inconvenient to check-in for our flight out that night. Other than that, it was a perfect family vacation to Nauvoo. Also the 25-30 min drive to Nauvoo from the house is beautiful along the Illinois side of the river. Not really an inconvenience if you like a woodland drive.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review, it's so neat to share the home with others and have people appreciate it as we do. I went down the same day and replaced the modem / router from Mediacom so it shouldn't be a problem for a long time. You're welcome back anytime, maybe you can spend more time and explore the area . There is so many cool places to visit with a lot of history. Please note - all areas have window air conditioners and there are fans and ceiling fans in the bedrooms.

A home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My siblings and I and spouses, plus a few of our adult kids spent the weekend, March 31-April 2.

We had a very enjoyable time. The highlight, of course, was the view of the Mississippi sunrise and the numerous bird wildlife. The home is very nice and we appreciated the little extra touches that made it even more like home. So much is provided and the needed items are well stocked. The owners were a pleasure and willing to help in any and every way. We were very comfortable there and would like to return. The neighborhood is pleasant and the neighbors are friendly too. The location is quiet and relaxing.

There is a great meat market, Dave's in Montrose.

" " Fish market in Niota, IL right after crossing the river from Ft. Madison.

All major shopping at Keokuk , Ft Madison, and Burlington.

The Villages of Van Buren offer a lot of history, museums, etc. There is the Dutchman's store in Cantril that we always enjoy going to, it has every thing from bolts of cloth, groceries, meats, bulk everything.

There are many brochures at the house and the local chambers of commerce have web sites.
