Greetings to you future guest!
It is a pleasure to welcome you at the Bed and Breakfast ''Il Mulino Di Valle'' here, in the heart of the Apennines Mountains between Tuscany and Emila. Our centuries old Mill has been refurbished and kept in all it's ancient beauty since the last day the grinding wheels stopped turning more than 40 years ago. Before starting your visit of our unique structure, walk with me across our natural domain that has seen history passing by for the last 1000 years. We are part of many books, stories and legends across all this time.
Our special little micro climate has helped growing an endless mature woods that homed incredible wildlife and are filled with countless wild flowers in every months of the year. Only a few steps away from the watermill you can either follow animals tracks for hours or discover kilometres of our natural walking and cycling trails. The wildlife often come to visit our garden filled with millions of fireflies in summer or during our magic mystic winter nights. Il Mulino di Valle geographical position, deep in the end of a valley where 3 rivers converge, make it ideal for the perfect getaway from the excess of mother nature. Here our summer nights are fresh and winter shows up just enough to be enjoyed. Like an echo from the past, you can hear water running everywhere inside and outside our little B&B. If all this seems already promising: falling asleep in a fresh comfortable bed, under the sound of running water, will blow your mind away... But wait, as the magic is far from over...
As we walked back to the Mill, following the ancient mill stream, you can noticed a first glimpse of what we will offer you. You see a lone stone structure with no neighbour, standing among tall trees, with two large verandas where you will maybe read or enjoy dinner and the river-rock paved court to dance under traditional music on special events. As you get closer to the old entrance door of Il Mulino Di Valle, you are passing by one of the last working Antique Wood Oven where we cook our breakfast bread, meals and pizzas for your own delight.
Ready to push the old door carved with the initials of the last millers?
It opened onto centuries ago. Thick rock walls are framing the intact remains of the mill grinders and mechanisms, still waiting for the water to make them move again. Maybe on your way to admire this piece of history, you will notice the old dinning room next door with its 2 meter wide fireplace and a range of unique Mountain Wine and Balsamic Vinegar. This is where you will enjoy your complete organic homemade breakfast with sweet and salty options or one of the traditional Italian dinners we can offer. Next to the grinding wheels, our newly install wood stove make sure to keep you warm in colder months. This large mill room can host different events, group dinners and use for different purpose.
The stairs will bring you to the hall of the Grain Floor of the mill, where they used to store the grain many years ago. The only two bedrooms of this floor are sharing a living room with TV(movies), books and games, a hall with a tourist information centre and a bathroom. The full Grain Floor is then ideal for families or group of friends. On the other hand, both rooms can be rented separately giving, in either of them, all the privacy and intimacy you can wish for.
***On one side you will find the impressive Suite Peonia that offers a unique antique experience. With its incredible furniture chosen to create a peaceful harmony between the low majestic wood beam ceiling and the three rock walls, it will stunned you without any doubt. The opening of any of its 4 windows will bring inside a soft sound of the ever running water from the mill stream.
***On the other side of the hall, the beautiful Twin Girasole is waiting for you under its old wooden ceiling. This room offers a double or twin bed solution ideal for friends, children or workers. It is flooded in light by two windows that easily bring in the fresh breeze of our valley.
***Our last option of room will need you to return to the outside courtyard where a private entrance opens upon to our complete Apartment Lilium. It has a newly equipped kitchen, a private bathroom, a dining room and a wonderful bedroom. The smell of burning wood from the stone fireplace situated the heart of this last one, a liberty set of couches and a large comfortable bed are welcoming you to a unique timeless atmosphere. Antique floor, wood ceiling and multiple rock walls open up to green nature through the seven windows.

Jessica Marmiroli purchased this mill in 2014
We were driving by this property everyday. It is impossible to not notice and my started calling it the Dream House. After a year of letting the ideas growing in our minds we finally jump onto the beautiful adventure...
So far all our guests, with no exception, agreed that our structure is a little hidden treasure among all the accommodation out there. Yo are finding here an atmosphere impossible to find anywhere else: a perfect combination of real antique rustic Italian house with all the comfort of nowadays, a peacefulness accessible from urban centre and a vast variety of activities and possibilities from Ferrari Drive to wood oven bread making.
We are devote to our guests and make a lot of effort to create a dream to make their stay a real unforgettable memory.
This property is the best of both worlds! Located in a gorgeous scenic location, yet close enough to larger and big cities (Modena) for exploring. From the minute we arrived, and were warmly greeted by Yan (and Big Boy, the dog) we felt right at home. This property has the most character of any we have ever stayed at, and after the interesting and detailed history told to us by Yan, it was even more special. Now for the apartment itself, it is completely equipped with everything you would need for a wonderful stay - the bed was very warm and comfy, kitchen easy to figure out and the views from every room were beautiful. Now for the breakfast - also the very best we had in Italy - fresh items from the village and the property, breads and jam made by Jessica, honey from the bee man down the street, eggs from the resident wandering chicken - everything cooked perfectly and DELICIOUS! There are quite a few really good restaurants near by (the very best one we visited is just right up the road). Jessica and Yan are the perfect hosts - warm, funny, friendly and very helpful. Definitely stay here if you want a unique and memorable experience (and did I mention the awesome breakfast??). THANK YOU two for everything! Arrivederci!

Charming restored mill apartment in the hills outside Modena. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic hosts, Yan and Jessica, provided tons of great information and suggestions for dining, touring, and things to do. We never had a bad meal and the fresh breakfast they prepared every morning was incredible! Thank you for accommodating us at the last minute and making our last week in Italy this year memorable. Give Big Boy a scratch on the head for us!
We arrived in Modena at the half way point of our 3 week vacation and it was just what we needed. Relaxing, cool (we so needed a break from the heat!) and so beautiful.
The mill is a wonder and Yan and Jessica have created a real paradise. We found the accommodations pristine, comfortable and well appointed.
Yan spent his days with us being our tour guide and was so informed about everything from the history of the mill, the surrounding towns, watch towers, the mountains, balsamic vinigar, goats, cheese etc etc etc he knows his stuff!
Jessica made us amazing food using tomatoes, herbs from the garden and makes her own ricotta cheese, aged meats and on an on. Cannot say enough about the food!
The hosts Yan and Jessica are fun and welcoming and so is their family and dog Big Boy. We even sang songs around a camp fire in the evening after home made pizzas in their pizza oven!
I highly recommend a stay at the mill!!
Il Mulino di Valle is a special place. Nestled in the valley outside of Serramazzoni, you can easily imagine yourself back in time. The sound of the running water from the stream and the church bells ringing every half hour is enough to make anyone chill out. The "Mill Keepers" (Jess & Yann) are wonderful--very knowledgable about the mill, food of the region, and what to do in the area. We had a special experience making pasta and pizza that Jess arranged. The beds were very comfortable and the micro climate of the valley where the Mill is located makes great sleeping weather! This was our favorite spot in the middle of a 10 day trip that included Venice and Lake Maggiore. The only watch-out is that you need to be prepared to drive on narrow winding roads to get to any of the small, charming surrounding towns. I hope to get back there one day!
We spent just under four weeks in Italy with visits in Venice, Rome, Florence, Lucca, Barga and at the Water Mill. The favorite of all of the entire family was the Water Mill. It is beautifully restored and maintained attracting our historic preservation interests. The Balsamic Vinegar and Wine tasting our foodie interests. The Ferrari museum the auto interests. The hiking our our desire for the outdoors. The goats and their milking and making cheese for the Food to Table learning interests and my son's pure joy! The Mill Keepers are amazingly welcoming, kind and full of information. The accommodations nice. The area was wonderful and contain for everyone, including more we hope to see on a later visit to this gem of a location.
When we read the description of this apartment it seemed to good to be true. It looked like everything we hope to find in a vacation rental. We were looking for somewhere to spend three nights at the end of our Italy trip, so we contacted the owner for more information. Jessica suggested that three nights was not enough to appreciate everything the area has to offer, and she made the location sound so delightful that we juggled our schedule a little and ended up booking for five nights.
Well, she was quite right - we have never enjoyed a five night stay more than we did here. Jessica's account was in no way exaggerated. She and Yan were gracious and generous hosts, and we really enjoyed getting to know them. They provided a lovely breakfast to begin our day, and were able to point us towards features we would enjoy. We came to appreciate what a magnificent job they have done in restoring the mill. A highlight of our visit was a tour of the mill property that helped us to appreciate the history of this corner of Emilia Romagna.
To be a little more specific, here's what we seek on a vacation that we found here: Modena is a city that is not too large, but that offers interesting attractions. Food is important for us, and Jessica was able to point us towards delightful restaurants offering food that is traditional to the area, not too expensive. We love hiking in the countryside, and exploring small picturesque villages. This is available around the mill, or a short drive away. If these are your objectives for a vacation, there's nowhere we would recommend more highly.
