Peace & tranquility in a small village 25 mins south of Carcassonne
If you're looking for a safe haven from which to explore the mysteries of the Cathar castles, discover delightful walks in the Malepère Massif or simply unwind in a peaceful space for yourselves, a Razès Gîte may be right for you.
Located in a quiet, rural village, guests have the opportunity to slow down the pace of time and re-discover a sense of inner peace and calm while gently re-connecting with the sights and sounds of nature all around.
There are two apartments at Razès – Soujeole and Corbières - both suitable for short stays or long lets. Each apartment is ideally suited for a couple and has its own private entrance, parking, fully equipped kitchen, dining and lounge areas, double bedroom and bath/shower room, wifi access. They may be rented together or individually.
Guests of Soujeole and Corbières gîtes have a choice of 3 shared yet secluded gardens and the Grange at their disposal for outdoor dining and relaxation. The Grange houses: the outdoor kitchen, washing machine, BBQ, table tennis & darts.
Ideally located in the rolling Razès countryside: Razès Gîtes are idyllic for couples who love walking in peaceful countryside with stunning views. We have plenty of maps and Jo gives guided walks and tours of the Cathar castles for those who choose to pursue this option.
Guests have the opportunity to slow down time, re-connect with the sights and sounds of nature all around safely tucked away in the heart of a rural village. The area is renowned for its wild orchids and birds of prey which are to be found no more than a stone's throw away. Depending on the time of year, the neighbouring hillsides of vines, poppies or sunflowers are simply spectacular lending incredible views of the countryside and Cathar castles.
With their unique ambiance & rustic character, Razès Gîtes are suitable for short & long lets. Open all year round, they also provide those who need a 'get-away-from-it-all' break in winter a bolthole from within which to re-energise during the long, cold months.
For the bird lover, it's a perfect place from which to admire the sights and sounds of many local species of buzzards, kites, eagles and kestrels among many others.
The owners are based in the adjoining property and are on hand, happy to help with advice, reservations & suggestions if and where required. However, if you've already made your own plans or prefer to have none at all, peace and privacy are all yours.
Whatever your preferred pastime, Razès Gîtes provide an ideal base from which to explore the Aude & Ariège countryside, the quaint circular villages and Cathar towns, or your own inner peace.
Local shops, wine and restaurants: The village of Escueillens is situated mid-way between Limoux & Mirepoix. There are no shops in the village so a series of mobile butchers, bakers and grocers make their daily rounds to the village square. The nearest shops, cafés and bank can be found just 7 km away in Belvèze which is also home to the local wine château.
The region is famous for its Blanquette de Limoux and also boasts more than 350 wines which you can't find in your supermarket back home. For those who like to indulge, we can arrange wine-tasting tours of the local caves and châteaux.
There are many delightful restaurants in the neighbouring towns of Mirepoix, Limoux & Carcassonne offering gastronomic experiences galore. We are happy to make recommendations & reservations.

Not only was our gîte (Corbières) cosy and charming, it was also equipped with everything you would need for a fantastic stay! The gardens and Grange were great additions, that provided further amenities and space for during the day and in the evening, with an additional fully equipped kitchen, washing machine and many places to sit and relax, alongside a dart board and table tennis. Jo and Bob made us feel very well welcomed, and right at home! Nothing was ever too much for them, they are available as and when you need them, for both practical help and local recommendations. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would love to stay again in the future. Thank you for making our holiday so great!

Thank you both so much for your wonderful comments! You are so very welcome back anytime. We're so delighted to hear when anyone enjoys their holiday and so are truly pleased to know you had a great time. Take care and thank you, Jo
The gite was very clean and comfortable. The Tour De France rode right through the village which was really exciting and all the village was out to cheer! Beautiful walks with spectacular scenery all around - an artist or photographer would enjoy this- also walkers and cyclists. Good safe walks/cycle routes for all ages and fitness levels. We reallly enjoyed our stay and would return. Thanks. Patricia and Jim

Quiet retreat in a small village. Wonderful hosts.
My husband and I spend almost one week in this quiet village. The gite was small as described but had all the amenities for a comfortable stay. The location was very good for traveling around during the day or just enjoying the outdoors. If you have some mobility issue, just be aware that this gite has a steep staircase to the bedroom mezzanine and a few steps down into he gite through a low door. For most people, this is ok. Bob and Jo are the most generous hosts. They are extremely helpful and attentive.

Thanks for the great review Marie-Anne and we're really glad you both enjoyed your stay.
We have to point out though that the original steep staircase in that gîte was replaced over a year ago and so the one you experienced with the half-stairway turn was a modern staircase conforming to current norms, designed precisely to remove the original steepness. We've just ended another marvellous season with customers coming and going and they appreciate the 'new' staircase.

Short but very sweet
We arrived after a rather hairy journey through some very unseasonal downpours. As the fields were being washed away before our eyes, Jo arrived to rescue us when our courage and sense of direction in near-nil visibility failed.
The next day the skies were clear, the sun shone and the beauty of the countryside was all around.
Armed with excellent suggestions from Bob as to how to get the most from our short time, we set off and enjoyed two days of exploring the immediate area. Lakes, hills, distant snow-capped mountains and acres upon acres of sunflowers in full bloom did much to whet our appetites for a return at an early date.
The gite was all we needed, with a charming and imaginatively designed garden just outside and accessed from a communal lounge/playroom/garden kitchen/small library room two doors along and ten steps away from our entrance.
The unseasonal storms returned to see us off on our last night, though this time viewed from the security of our bedroom window - and if there's one thing to get me excited it's a ripping, banging and crashing lightning storm - but not when you're lost and in unfamiliar open countryside which is being washed away as you watch.
Bravo Bob and bravo Jo, the perfect hosts. Unobtrusive, friendly, helpful and wise. We would hope that our paths cross again soon.
And finally to Mr or Mrs Thinking-Of-Staying-at-Bob-and-Jo's, all I can say is stop thinking and go for it.

Cute open plan apartment in the heart of rural France
We were looking for peace and calm on our walking holiday in the Razès. While the weather was a little inclement, the gite ticked all the boxes for us. It was snug and warm with great views over the gardens. Well-equipped with all the essentials and a free film and music library to hand! The peace in the gite and the countryside were just what we wanted. We loved it!

It was wonderful to welcome you both to our gîte and we're so pleased that you enjoyed it - despite the weather! It's always nice for us when people make the most of the facilities and so we''re really happy to hear you enjoyed the films and music in particular. You will always be welcome back; hopefully when the weather is a little more clement for you.

ticked all the boxes!
Definitely a tranquil place and space in which to unwind, well located in the heart of cathar castle land, and as cute and cosy as the photos reveal. We loved every minute and will be back in summer to enjoy the gite in the warmer climes too!

It's been our absolute pleasure to meet you both and you will always be more than welcome here! And while you managed to enjoy your mulled wine around the wood burner in the grange during a wet and wintry week in December, you'll be certain to be using it for respite from the sun in summer. We look forward to seeing you and your friends next summer enjoying your BBQs in the secluded gardens!

About the host
Hosted by Jo & Bob Norton
Survivors of a combined total of more than 60 (ouch!) years of practising and teaching in the fields of management and marketing in both France and England, we (that's Jo and Bob) have enjoyed settling down in the Pays Cathare and steeping ourselves in the rich history of the area which we now share with visitors intrigued with a similar Cathare calling.
Why they chose this property
We now live and breathe the sweet fresh air of freedom in this remote village in a largely unspoilt corner in southern France. Beautiful walks over hills and through forests are on our doorstep and they tantalise us and our guests daily with breath-taking views and a wide variety of indigenous flora and fauna.
What makes this property unique
It's rare to find a quiet place from which you can easily travel out when you want to explore the local area and heritage or travel further afield to the mountains or coast (being no more than an hour from either of these). Many guests also choose to simply relax and unwind in the gardens and immerse themselves in the peaceful sounds of nature floating in on the breeze. For us, Razès Gîtes offers it all. Also available on site (upon reservation): Basic instruction in Hatha yoga Massage for relaxation/problem areas Wine-tasting Guided walks
