About this property
16th Century Cottage with private heated pool and panoramic views
Our typically french cottage dates back to the 16th century and enjoys panoramic views over the chateau of Villebois Lavalette in the Charente to the front and the beautiful countryside of the Dordogne to the rear - you are, therefore, ideally located to explore both these departments during your stay.
The cottage sits in the 1.5 acre grounds of the original farmhouse and, whilst it is attached to the farmhouse, it is separated by a courtyard wall which provides you with privacy but the owners are on hand to deal with any problems should they arise. The cottage itself has all the charm you would expect of a building of this age with its 2 foot thick walls to keep the interior cool when the sun outside gets too much to the large Charentaise fireplace with log burner to keep you warm if the evenings get chilly. Cornflower blue shutters and aromatic honeysuckle climbing the walls complete the rustic chocolate box charm.
The cottage comfortably accommodates 2 adults but there is an additional single bed in the bedroom with a privacy screen, if required, should you be a party of three adults. There is also a bed settee in the downstairs living area should you be a party of four. Unfortunately, we do no longer accept children as we now have a young dog who is nervous of them.
The cottage comes with exclusive use of the heated in ground 8m x 4m swimming pool (May to September) which also benefits from the stunning views to the chateau and has a covered seating area to escape to if the sun gets too much.
To the rear of the cottage is a stone built barbecue with patio and seating area which enjoys the view over the Dordogne.
At night, sit outside and enjoy the spectacle of brilliant stars that puncture the inky blackness of the sky, the likes of which you will only get when away from the hustle and bustle of city lights.
When you are ready to leave the tranquility of your holiday base you are ideally situated to visit the many famous attractions of the area.
Villebois Lavalette with its chateau, Saturday morning market, boulangerie, restaurant and bar is only 5 minutes drive away. Likewise, La Rochebeaucourt, situated just across the border in the Dordogne has à boulangerie, bar and restaurants and again, is just a five minute car journey.
Angouleme (capital of the Charente) , Brantome (Venice of the Perigord) and Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (officially one of the most beautiful villages in France) are all within 30 minutes drive.
For those looking for activities, there is a zip wire park, golf, tennis, river beaches, canoeing, a water park and much more within easy reach for a day out.
But, if you are just looking to kick back and relax, then set yourself up by the pool or on one of the patios outside the cottage and just take in the views which change throughout the day as the light changes culminating in a truly stunning evening sunset - all with a glass of your favourite tipple in hand - what could be better - ENJOY!!

Most relaxing and beautiful gite we have stayed in during our 10+ years of visiting France. Fabulous hosts and location. Could not have wished for a better holiday to recharge our batteries
We had a really relaxing holiday in the beautiful Haute Faye. We didn't want to leave! Thank you Wendy and Dave for letting us stay and for your first class hospitality.
Everything was great : the garden and the swimming pool were very nice, everything needed in the house and Wendy had many kind gifts when we arrived.
We highly recommend !
A hill top pool with a view over a medieval chateau, surrounded by fields of golden sunflowers. Peace and idyllic isolation yet close to amenities, a glowing red sunset as you you enjoy your evening meal al fresco. Add in welcoming hosts, an ancient stone farmhouse ideal for couples or small families and this great value.
Lovely characterful property, with amazing views. Beautiful setting with a nicely furnished Gite. Great private pool, and peaceful patios to enjoy. Wendy and Dave were the perfect hosts, there if needed, but gave us our privacy. Lovely welcome pack , good location, would highly recommend.

It has a splendid and well kept pool with lots of space and seating for relaxing. We really enjoyed our stay and the gite and surrounding area met all our expectations and more. We were given a lovely welcome pack on arrival which was appreciated. Our little dog Betty enjoyed playing in the large secure garden and we loved our morning swim in the pool. Would definitely recommend this gite to anyone wanting to get away from the stresses of every day life.

Pleased you enjoyed your stay - look forward to seeing you again sometime
The property was beautiful and set in large beautiful grounds. A good sized pool and comfortable seating: clean house with all the amenities you could need. It was great.
Wendy and Dave were absolutely fantastic hosts: finding the perfect balance between being there to assist but not feeling like they encroached on the holiday at all.
The location was also very good - about 10 mins drive to the local town and supermarket/petrol station, and 30 mins to closest "nightlife". There also many beautiful towns and cities within an hours drive too.

A week in Edon
A very well equiped Gite with character and stunning views over the Dordogne to the rear and Charente at the front.
Dave & Wendy Whiting have obviously thought through what guests would need and provided an excellent welcome pack, probably the most comprehensive we have had over a period of 23 years of Gite holidays. They made you feel very welcome which gave a good "feel" to the stay. The little things had been thought of and these made the difference e.g. their's was the first BBQ where I felt that I didn't need to wrap the meat in foil first!

Many thanks for your kind review - we are so pleased you were comfortable and enjoyed your stay
We spent a week here and absolutely loved it, beautiful location on top of a hill with 360 views that are just incredible , get up early to see the vapour rising off the forests as far as you can see and not sound but a distant cow & birds, look the other way and sun illuminating the castle on the hill at Villibois. We’d live there without any hesitation!!
Dave and Wendy are superb hosts, friendly and very kind, everything you could need is supplied too. Location is spot on for villages nearby, Angouleme or a bit further away to Cognac or heading the other way Périgord and Dordonge - all just a easy drive.
So don’t hesitate to stay here , we’ll be back ( and if you do decide to move let us know!! ;-))

Enchanting cottage surrounded by spectacular views
We've had a lovely relaxing break staying in a beautiful gite. After a long drive, we were received by Wendy and Dave and welcomed into their gite along with a well received welcome pack. My daughter and I and our dog Daisy wanted a break away from the stress of commuting and our London life and this we definitely had. The private pool was the order of the day as temperatures were in the 30's most days. The accommodation provided is perfect, the kitchen facilities are just right and inside the gite is cool throughout, this was most appreciated by Daisy. Wendy and Dave provide just the right amount of privacy but also very friendly and approachable when needed. We would also like to thank the gorgeous Archie and Eric for their entertainment. Returning in the future when my batteries need recharging again is a definite possibility!

A wonderful holiday that was hard to leave...
We absolutely loved our holiday in this fabulous gite. Dave and Wendy have thought of everything and ensured our holiday was perfect in every way. The gite is in a fabulous hilltop position with stunning views from the gite, huge fully enclosed garden and luxurious (heated!) pool and surrounding terrace.
There are fabulous walks from the door and surrounding areas. The nearest town of Villebois Lavallette is lovely with a hilltop chateau that can be seen from the gite. It also has a great super market and it's only a short drive away.
There's also great markets and Brocante markets in the surrounding towns.
It was wonderful to have our 2 weeks here with our 2 dogs and they loved having Archie and Eric as great playmates and knowing they couldn't escape! Dave and Wendy have everything right here and also great company if you want company.
The huge skies, rolling countryside views and stunning sunsets are really special. The you both and we will see you again as soon as possible!

About the host
Hosted by Dave & Wendy Whiting
Dave & Wendy moved to France with their two dogs when Dave retired last year. It was a fairly snap decision but one we have certainly not regretted at all. We love the slower pace of life and enjoy pottering around our property, improving it as we go. We are very proud of how we have brought the farmhouse back to life and would very much like to share our beautiful location with you - you will feel like you are truly sitting on top of the world.
Why they chose this property
You really need to come to truly appreciate to beauty of our location - we feel we have not yet managed to take any photo that does it proper justice but all our visitors have been blown away with the breathtaking views and the magnificent sunsets you are able to enjoy due to our elevated situation. The night sky on a clear night is full of the brightest stars and the peace you will experience is verging on spiritual. But don't take our word for it - come and find out for yourselves.
What makes this property unique
We are ideally placed to drop into the Dordogne with its beautiful countryside and picturesque villages or you can travel 30 minutes up the road to the capital at Angouleme if you want to dip into the city environment for a day with its numerous bars, restaurants, shops and museums. Alternatively, drive across country to the vineyards around Cognac etc if you fancy a day wine or Pineau tasting. We have many famous tourist attractions within 30-40 minutes drive away, not to mention the fairytale style chateau down the road in Villebois Lavalette which you can also see from your cottage or pool.
