The village of Junquillal (Hoon-key-all) remains unspoiled, a haven for those looking to spend their precious leisure time on the road less traveled. The village is home to only about 200 residents. Local Costa Ricans (Ticos) as well as international ex-patriots call this area home. If you’re looking for a laid-back, quiet and authentic setting with easy access to all kinds of options, you’ll love it here. However, Playa Junquillal is conveniently located 36 km (30 minutes) from Tamarindo if you are seeking nightlife and a lot of action. There are a few other beach towns sprinkled along the way that brings about more entertainment such as Lola’s in Playa Avellenas and yoga at The Peace Retreat in Playa Negra, just a short drive up the coast.
Tierra Pacifica commercial center is where you will find a grocery store carrying local and fruits and vegetables. In the same plaza you'll find Amigo’s restaurant, the Surf Cafe for breakfast options and a morning latte, and a surf shop all just 5 minutes (drive)down the road from Punta Paraiso. Our local supermarket can provide just what you need, or for a wider variety you can drive to Tamarindo or Santa Cruz. ( all along paved roads ) for more options.
Several restaurants are available in the area ranging from typical Costa Rican dishes to French cuisine or take out pizza.
There are many activities that Costa Rica has to offer. You can arrange with our nearby tour companies, horseback rides, surfing, zip lines, jungle river tours, paddle boarding, kayaking hiking, caving, birding, mountain biking, scuba diving, deep sea fishing adventures or turtle nesting tours....or just spend the day relaxing on the beach or at the pool.
Or for the golf enthusiast you will also find Hacienda Pinalla Golf Course (an 18 hole championship course - 7, 296 yard design set on the Gold Coast of Costa Rica). Reflecting respect for its natural setting, the Golf Course at Hacienda Pinilla has earned designation as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for its preservation of ecological balance. Here you have the extraordinary opportunity to enjoy your game in the natural habitats of Costa Rica, where the surrounding beauty and glimpses of exotic wildlife create a truly special experience and only 15 km-20 minutes from Junquillal.
Junquillal is also home to a communal effort to preserve the Leatherback Turtle and other marine turtles of the Pacific. You can take a walk out front of the house at night and with a bit of luck you may witness the miracle of turtle nesting. From Sept.-March, sea turtles dig their nests into the sand of Junquillal to lay their eggs. Four different species of turtles are present, including the large and severely endangered Leatherback and Ridley sea turtles.
The ocean water/beach quality in Junquillal is excellent. It is so good, in fact, that year after year, the area wins the coveted Blue Ecological Flag, an annual award, which awards effort and volunteer work in the pursuit of conservation and development, in accordance with the protection of natural resources, implementation of actions to address the Climate change, the search for better hygienic sanitary conditions and the improvement of the public health of the inhabitants of Costa Rica and beach cleanliness. It improves the quality of water for human consumption, protection of water resources, and treatment of waste water.
The beaches in Junquillal offer some of the best surf casting fishing experiences that can be had anywhere in the world. There are great surf breaks that encompass the needs of the beginner to the adventurous expert, long board or short board, paddleboard or kayak. If you hike around low tide from Junquillal village to the north along the beach you get to Playa Blanca, a delightful white sand swimming beach bordered by a rocky outcrop with many tide pools, great for playing or snorkeling. A little bit further you arrive at the world-class surf beach of Playa Negra. Surfing and stand-up paddle boarding lessons and rentals are readily available for all.
At the southern most end of Junquillal is Punta Paraiso, where the road ends at the estuary of the Rio Nandamojo. A river and lagoon has formed behind the beach and a protected mangrove forests extends inland. Area kayak tours and paddle boarding are offered so you can venture up the river to admire the intriguing water jungle with its flora and fauna, monkeys, birds and maybe a possible crocodile on a riverbank. Around low tide - 2 hours before and after - you can cross the Rio Nandamojo by foot to the south of Punta Paraiso. A hike along the coast yields a fantasyland of beach wilderness where you can get lost in time collecting shells and taking in the views. The estuary is a favorite place for locals who fish with hand lines and on some weekends you see families having a picnic and enjoying Costa Rican 'Pura vida' with a barbecue on the beach or river of freshly caught fish.
Punta Paraiso's location and weather makes for a perfect fit for a get away, either for a few days or a few weeks, any time of year!!
No matter how you choose to spend your time here, we know your stay at Punta Paraiso will be exactly what you need!! Enjoy your stay!

Tranquil and Amazing!!!
I have a busy life and I was looking for a destination to relax and recharge my batteries. From what I saw online, this home in Junquillal looked wonderful. When I arrived, it was even better than I imagined! The property, grounds, pool and beautiful beach were amazing! I didn't want to leave! Matter of fact, I'm coming back next year and staying longer!
My wife and I and my two daughters were very excited to stay at the house that we saw on Beachfront Bargain Hunt. After seeing the episode we really liked the area of Junquillal. When we started to research, right away we knew we knew we had to go. There are beautiful beaches, Junquillal is renowned for the best fishing in Guanacaste, restaurants, a fun little town called Paraiso, paddle boarding, surfing, zip line tours and horseback riding. The paddle boarding was right down the street from the property in the estuary and my girls loved it! We couldn't believe we found the same house for rent and it didn't disappoint. Merry Christmas to us! We want to come back next year. The house is on a huge well manicured property with lime, orange, coconut and star fruit trees. There were pineapple bushes too. Having our own private pool was a big bonus for the girls we felt like we had our own little piece of paradise. Laying by the pool you could hear the waves. Almost every morning there was a little yellow bird that joined us for breakfast. Later in the day an iguana would look through the bushes for flowers to eat. The beach is beautiful unspoiled black sand just yards from the house. I caught a yellow finned tuna surfcasting. Swimming in the surf was no problem and it definitely was very mellow at low tide. We found a little cove about a 10 min walk north up the beach where the conditions were like a swimming pool. Sleeping arrangements worked well we had the girls staying in the guest house while we stayed in the main house on the top floor with a 180° view of the ocean and our own private porch... very romantic. We had the best of both worlds. We were secluded in nature and a beautiful landscape but if we wanted to go out we could drive to town in 5 mins and enjoy the culture and another 20 mins go to Tamarindo which is a highly developed town with lots of things to do. We will be back next year. Loved our stay and would highly recommend this spot.
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with your family Chris!!
We look forward to having you back next year. Remember to secure your booking, as you know the holidays book up quick! See you in 2017!

Wonderful trip with the family. Rented both the house and guest house and had plenty of space for all of us. The grounds are amazing with all the landscaping and wildlife. Beach is right out the front door. Beds are comfy and we had everything we needed. Will be back in the near future.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay! Look forward to having your family here again.
Right on the Pacific, with plenty of wildlife and great sunsets
Overall a good spot. Clean inside, right on the beach with a convenient outside shower, and close to a river estuary for great walks and wildlife viewings. Little grocery store, reasonably well stocked, is about a mile away, and several good restaurants about the same distance - Lochita's, neat little native spot, and 2 hotel restaurants as well.
Master bedroom suite is upstairs, with only access a narrow, steep metal spiral staircase - not for everyone.
The pool and entrance to the beach is shared with occupants (if there are any) of a guest house on the property. We were fortunate to have a great couple staying there, so there was no real invasion of privacy for us.
While there were a few things we would have liked (i.e. 4 chairs inside for kitchen table, more than 2 chairs for outside/pool area), the main problem was swarming bees in the pool the entire stay, despite various attempts to get rid of them. For some this would make the pool unusable, because they swarmed in the two areas of entrance and exit to the pool. They supposedly didn't sting, but we were stung 3 times during the week.
We are currently unsuccessful in our attempt to get our security deposit back, as the owners have declared "significant damage" to something we acknowledge, but feel is relatively minor.
Based on the above, we would not recommend the rental to friends or relatives.

Updated 9/16: Upon review of the damage, the guest was refunded partial deposit of unused money to fix damage. The bees have been addressed and no longer an issue anywhere on or near the property.
Dear Mr. Squires and guests,
We are happy to hear that overall you enjoyed Punta Paraiso and its location.
The listing does indicate that unless both homes on the property are rented by the same party, the space and pool are shared unless one remains empty. They are not always rented at the same time, but during high season it is more likely.
Im sorry that you didn't feel there were enough chairs available, however the pictures do indicate the 3 chair set up and table in the kitchen, the 2 outdoor chairs and table. The pictures do not show the 6-8 person picnic table on the pool deck, and the additional love seat in the sunroom, making seating for 8-10 people outside.
Due to our location to open space and protected mangroves we are subject to wildlife that can and do arrive on our property, we however cannot control nature and the arrival of bees, raccoons and other such animals to our property.
While we understand this may have been nuisance, we are holding your damage security deposit for the fire that your party started in the concrete planter, not attending to it, and burning our pool deck. During your stay in Costa Rica it was the dry season and Costa Rica was having the worst drought it has had since 1958, I guess we are just thankful that the only thing your party burned was the pool deck.
Sorry for your troubles, but this is why we have a security deposit, so that when damage to the property is caused we have a recourse to fix or replace damaged property.
Our stay was for 10days in December 2015. The house is in the perfect location for peace and tranquility. Right on the beach with very few people and right out the front door. Beds were comfy and had everything we needed. Pool was awesome! Surrounded in nature and able to unplug, just what we needed. Highly recommend!!
So glad you enjoyed you'd stay! Please come back soon!
Wow what a gem!!! Perfect location and what a great property!!!
Come back again soon!
