Our home is elegantly and solidly built of traditional, local materials—stone, cantera, barra and talavera tiles—and its name derives from the many neocolonial arches found throughout the home.
A scenic 10-15 minute walk downhill into Centro will take you to the Jardin, or main plaza.
Our home has a charming presence offering both space and intimacy because of its clever and elegant design. You can enjoy the comfortable living spaces on the second floor, or relax downstairs. Because we are in Atascadero, our home offers a greater amount of outdoor space than is found in other areas, including a spacious veranda, a yard and garden, and views of greater San Miguel from our rooftop. Each of the three main bedrooms has a full bath and fireplace. The master has a partner sinks, jacuzzi bathtub, shower stall and a two-person sauna.
We also rent our one-bedroom and studio casitas for an additional price.
Atascadero is one of the most attractive and elegant of all neighborhoods in San Miguel. On a hillside overlooking Centro, it has the advantage of being in a quiet, residential neighborhood but still within walking distance of downtown "Centro". You can walk downhill through charming neighborhoods on cobblestone streets into the heart of San Miguel and all of its charms--with its unique mix of Spanish colonial architecture and and Mexican charm, its many shops, restaurants and churches. One direction takes you to the main market, and another takes you to the "Jardin" or main square.
After enjoying San Miguel's lively town center, you can return to a quiet and comfortable home. If you don't feel like walking, you can call a taxi. Taxis in San Miguel are plentiful and inexpensive (40-50 pesos per ride, or a bit more when you call one). Taxis serve all of San Miguel, including trips out of town. Public buses are available, but most tourists prefer walking or taking taxis. Taxi drivers are friendly, knowledgeable and many speak English.
Central San Miguel lies to the west of our home, and attractions of a different sort lie just behind us to the east. San Miguel's unique botanical garden, the Charco del Ingenio, protects many indigenous species including 156 species of migratory and resident birds, and 110 species of butterflies.
The Charco is a 10 minute walk from our home. Just past the Charco you'll find San Miguel's shopping mall and Cinemex theaters, as well as the famous 'El Tianguis' Tuesday Market--these are a longer walk, or a short taxi ride away. The Tuesday market is an open air market that operates every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. (and a smaller market on Sundays). This is a huge market that has hundreds of vendors selling everything: fresh produce, fish, chicken, CDs, DVDs, clothes, furniture, kitchenware, radios, used car parts, tools, and almost anything else you can imagine.
Though not yet furnished, you can take in the views of downtown and the surrounding countryside from our interesting rooftop.
