A neocolonial Spanish style home gifted by a Mexican president to his pilot.
Our home is elegantly and solidly built of traditional, local materials—stone, cantera, barra and talavera tiles—and its name derives from the many neocolonial arches found throughout the home.
A scenic 10-15 minute walk downhill into Centro will take you to the Jardin, or main plaza.
Our home has a charming presence offering both space and intimacy because of its clever and elegant design. You can enjoy the comfortable living spaces on the second floor, or relax downstairs. Because we are in Atascadero, our home offers a greater amount of outdoor space than is found in other areas, including a spacious veranda, a yard and garden, and views of greater San Miguel from our rooftop. Each of the three main bedrooms has a full bath and fireplace. The master has a partner sinks, jacuzzi bathtub, shower stall and a two-person sauna.
We also rent our one-bedroom and studio casitas for an additional price.
Atascadero is one of the most attractive and elegant of all neighborhoods in San Miguel. On a hillside overlooking Centro, it has the advantage of being in a quiet, residential neighborhood but still within walking distance of downtown "Centro". You can walk downhill through charming neighborhoods on cobblestone streets into the heart of San Miguel and all of its charms--with its unique mix of Spanish colonial architecture and and Mexican charm, its many shops, restaurants and churches. One direction takes you to the main market, and another takes you to the "Jardin" or main square.
After enjoying San Miguel's lively town center, you can return to a quiet and comfortable home. If you don't feel like walking, you can call a taxi. Taxis in San Miguel are plentiful and inexpensive (40-50 pesos per ride, or a bit more when you call one). Taxis serve all of San Miguel, including trips out of town. Public buses are available, but most tourists prefer walking or taking taxis. Taxi drivers are friendly, knowledgeable and many speak English.
Central San Miguel lies to the west of our home, and attractions of a different sort lie just behind us to the east. San Miguel's unique botanical garden, the Charco del Ingenio, protects many indigenous species including 156 species of migratory and resident birds, and 110 species of butterflies.
The Charco is a 10 minute walk from our home. Just past the Charco you'll find San Miguel's shopping mall and Cinemex theaters, as well as the famous 'El Tianguis' Tuesday Market--these are a longer walk, or a short taxi ride away. The Tuesday market is an open air market that operates every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. (and a smaller market on Sundays). This is a huge market that has hundreds of vendors selling everything: fresh produce, fish, chicken, CDs, DVDs, clothes, furniture, kitchenware, radios, used car parts, tools, and almost anything else you can imagine.
Though not yet furnished, you can take in the views of downtown and the surrounding countryside from our interesting rooftop.

About George and Julie Kalmar
George and I have lived in Los Angeles for 20+ years. We now live in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. We have two children, ages 15 and 25, and we work in international education and other creative fields. We enjoy sharing our homes with visitors to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Our home in San Miguel is a spacious, traditional Spanish Colonial home, with a large veranda and yard, and two adjacent casitas. Our traditional Santa Fe-style adobe casita is located on 13 acres of high desert, 30 minutes southeast of Santa Fe. Like many of our guests, we love to explore the world, and hosting people from all over the world enriches our own experience. We always provide attention that is both professional and personal.

Spacious and charming with great host
This classic Mexican home is just a stone's throw from Centro. Large rooms with formal dining room and expansive outdoor areas make for comfortable stay. Three ensuite bathrooms ensure privacy. And host Julie could not be more gracious and helpful, whether arranging for a cook or housekeeper or guiding us towards the best places in SMA to dine or have fun. Five stars all around.
Lovely, spacious Home Away in San Miguel
We were a party of 6 in San Miguel de Allende for a reunion of old friends. With 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, each couple had their own space. The living and dining rooms were of a grand scale which was also a plus for evenings around the fireplaces in both rooms.
The house has a beautiful arched terrace/veranda space which would be superb for gathering if it had not been February and a bit too cool for that space.
The location is in the Atascadero neighborhood of San Miguel which means that it's a bit far from the center down quite a steep series of cobbled streets, but taxis are cheap and readily available.
The owners provided all the necessary info for getting around ie phone numbers, maps, etc.
One slight inconvenience was that the bedrooms and kitchen electrical wiring are all on one circuit which meant that, even when we were careful, we had to make a trip out to the circuit breaker each morning when coffee and toast were being prepared. Just make sure that you shut down as many electrical items as possible before the morning ritual.
Any request or question we had was handled almost immediately. In addition, two of my bags were stolen at the airline hub in the States. That meant having to replace quite a few items, since the vacation was just starting. Julie, the owner met us on our arrival and after our house orientation, she took me to a mall, some distance from the house, where I was able to find almost everything I needed. I felt it was a service beyond the call of duty.
Consider this home if you are planning a trip to San Miguel de Allende and you are a family or group.
When in town, be sure to visit Casa el Diezmo. It was the high point of our restaurant experiences. The garden is beautiful with hummingbirds and butterflies darting about. The food, Yucatecan, owner and staff are exceptional
Thank you for your thoughtful and thorough review! It was a pleasure hosting you and your friends.
We do not have the circuit breaker problem ourselves but will remedy the cause.
Of course I was happy to help you acquire replacements for lost items! It is every travelers worst nightmare to have one's luggage stolen.

Beautiful home to stay in when visiting San Miguel!
We stayed here for New Years 2015. I highly recommend looking into this house when visiting this charming destination. The city has endless charm and history. The owners of the house answered questions promplty, left us with guides/map on the city and everything you would need for a home to stay in. The owner also put us in touch with the woman who helps them with their house while they are traveling. She was tremendous help, speaks fluent English and is also available for all of your questions when you arrive in town. The house had ample room and a very spacious courtyard. You are about a ten minute walk from downtown and close to other attractions. I highly recommend staying here. You will not regret it!
Spacious home, wonderful service.
We stayed a week for New Year's in this well located, spacious and beautiful home. Lots of room and well equipped. Excellent service from the staff. Nice views too.
Casa De Los Arcos is ideally located between the "Centro" which is the historical center of the city and the "Charco" which is the beautiful botanical garden on a small lake. Both are walking distance from the house. We are also close to many "callejones" or narrow beautiful walkways where you can marvel in the local architecture and floral designs. Atascadero is one of the most desirable locations in San Miguel with great views and safe streets. It is full of large mansions and charming streets in a tranquil setting. We also offer our one-bedroom casita for rent for an additional charge.
