Overview

About the property

The apartment is in the third floor of a traditional building in the heart of picturesque Bica neighourhood. You'll find one confortable bedroom, a comfy living room with one sofa, a walking closet, a kitchen and bathroom with shower.

The apartment

At a walking distance from the riverbank, the apartment has a breathtaking view of the river and roofs of the city. The decoration is modern but keeps a touch of the Lisbon and Potuguese heritage.

The bedroom has a confortable double bed room and two other guests can be accomodated in the sofa in the living room.

Most of the times we pick up guests in the airport. We'll be glad to give you informations about some of the city attractions.

The neighbourhood

Bica neighbourhood is well known for its hospitality and hosts one of the most popular Santo António parties (a street party in June 13th). Is also known for the XIXth century funicular that connects the riverside area with Bairro Alto and Chiado, the trendiest blocks in the city.

Bica Funicular - Designed by Raúl Mesnier du Ponsard, was inaugurated in 1892. In 2002 was classified as a National Monument. It climbs the Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo for 245 metres- The entrance to the apartment building is located in this street, in its lower part, where stands a charming small square.

Mercado da Ribeira - It's the main Lisbon market. Here you you can find either the most exquisite flowers or gourmet products. But the main attraction are the food stalls in one of the main halls, where you can try the best international and Portuguese cuisine. Just around the corner.

Bairro Alto - The trendiest neighbourhood in the city, it's packed with modern bars and restaurants. It's just at the top of the street.

Chiado - Take a five minutes walk up the street and you get into the 18th century city's heart Chiado is where the Opera Theatre (Teatro de São Carlos) and the Modern Art Museum are located. Its restaurants, fancy shops and nice bars are well known either to locals or visitors.

Baixa district - Just at a 15 minutes walk, this was the area of the city rebuilt in the 18th century. It's limited by two squares (one faces the river) and is a well known shopping district. The famous Rua Augusta arch is open to visits daily and around the corner is located the Museum of Design.

Getting aroun

The Cais do Sodré subway station is just 5 minutes away from the apartment. In the some station you can take the train to Cascais, a charming town well known for its beaches. Down the street from the apartment, you have several buses and also a tramway line that goes along the river bank.

The connection to the airport is very easy: you get in the airport subway station and you get off in Cais do Sodré Station! It takes only 30 minutes. An expectable cab fare is 15 to 20 euros.

Convenient location!

  • 3 of 5

This apartment is in a good location for several reasons. The "Time Out" Marketplace is a short walk and has numerous excellent food establishments at very reasonable prices. It can get very crowded, so try to go early. There are also many charming little restaurants in the area that we enjoyed discovering. It is walking distance to shopping of every variety, from high end designer stores to local boutiques. Walking in much of Lisbon is not for the faint at heart as it is very hilly with many stairs. If you are in good physical condition you should be able to walk to most of the sights with viewpoints and historical areas in the city. It is also easy walking distance to the train station for the train to Sintra, a place you must see while in Lisbon.

The location is probably the apartment's best feature, however there are some downsides to be aware of in regards to that. First, it gets very noisy at night with many late night revelers who've had too much to drink. There is also a bar/restaurant in the same building 2 floors directly below this apartment that adds to the night time noise. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday of our stay were quite noisy, but on Sunday and Monday it was much quieter. This is the trade off for the convenience of the location and it's good to be aware of that. After all, we can catch up on our sleep when we return home.

The apartment is in a very old building and reflects that. The stairs leading to the 3rd floor are narrow and steep, common in a building of its age. Be prepared for that if you are bring large luggage. We had only carry-on luggage and with Paolo's help were able to navigate the stairs on arrival without mishap. It has been painted and decorated and is basically clean, but could use better lighting in the living room for reading and more comfortable seating. Paolo and Rute were very responsive both prior to our arrival in answering the many inquiries we made, and during our stay. The electricity went out the first night we were there and Paolo responded right away letting us know the power company was working on fixing the problem. They also have photos in the apartment done by a photographer friend of theirs which we sought out at the Saturday flea market, purchasing several beautiful photos of Lisbon.

This is a way to live for a short time as locals do and we highly recommend it. You will see Lisbon in a unique way and gain a true appreciation for its culture and people. Enjoy the journey!
