Inspired by the amazing cave hotels in Goreme, Cappadoccia during our assignment to Turkey, Kilim Cottage is a recently renovated casita in the beautiful Tanque Verde valley, Tucson. Nestled in the lush valley landscape between the Rincon Mountains to the south, the Catalina Foothills to the north, and the Coronado National Forest just east of the property, Kilim Cottage has been designed and decorated to offer restful and inspiring accommodations by owners who want you to enjoy your Tucson experience as much as they have!
Hand-woven tribal rugs and kilims adorn the walls and floors of the master bedroom, as well as the living area and kitchenette, providing a warm and colorful décor much like the underground cottages of Goreme. However, each room in our casita is climate controlled with its own HVAC thermostat, and boasts thick masonry walls keeping the Cottage warm in the winters and cool in the summers. Custom-designed and insulated carriage doors enclose each end of the cottage, providing guests a rare opportunity to open their living space to the outdoors, dine al fresco, and enjoy nature just outside your front door.
A well-appointed kitchenette includes a refrigerator/freezer, microwave, toaster and dual hot plate for those occasions when guests prefer to dine in, while the spacious master bedroom has a beautifully-tiled and oversized shower in the full bathroom, in addition to an extra sink and vanity in the laundry room with stacking washer-dryer. Entertainment center has a large flat-screen TV, DVD, CD, VHS, and stereo system, with wi-fi access from the main house, with over 300 DVDs available for viewing. The cottage, as well as the grounds, is handicapped/wheelchair accessible. Each room is just under 300 square feet (584 square feet total in the casita) with lofty 9-foot ceilings. We are also a pet friendly accommodation – please discuss bringing your pet(s) with the owners. Pet sitting options can be negotiated; please note there is a $10 per night pet fee to cover additional cleaning, which is collected in cash at the beginning of the guest's stay.
Best of all, the proprietors welcome you to enjoy full use of the one-acre enclosed compound which is surrounded by a seven-foot privacy wall. Inside this sanctuary the grounds have been landscaped by the same company that designed the Sonoran Desert Museum grounds, and offers a variety of fauna, bird-watching, and mountain vistas. Guests are also welcome to use the inner patio area with its custom pebble-tech pool, waterfall and hot tub. A fire pit with chairs and seating provides the perfect conclusion to western sunsets, and guests are also able to use the outdoor grill by the fire pit upon request. Amazing views of all four Tucson mountain chains can be seen from the rooftop deck, as well as unparalleled stargazing at night.

LOCATION DETAILS: Kilim Cottage is 5 minutes from Bear Canyon and 10 minutes from Sabino Canyon, which are perfect for sightseeing via walking, hiking, biking or a narrated tram ride. Excellent location for cyclists! Paved bike paths start at the end of your driveway on Tanque Verde Road and extend throughout the greater Tucson area. Five minutes from beautiful Agua Caliente Park and its massive palms and hot springs. 7 minutes to Udall Park with paved walking track, dog park & indoor recreation center.
10 minutes from the iconic Gaslight Theater, Trail Dust Town, Park Place Mall, cinemas and numerous restaurants. Five minutes from the Saguaro National Park north entrance, and 10 minutes from the east entrance (with hiking, biking & horse trails, a paved 8 mile loop for a scenic drive or cycling, picnic areas and a free educational desert life video at the visitors center). 25 minutes from Colossal Cave. Close to several horse boarding stables on the East/Northeast side of Tucson. 10 minutes from Rocking Star Ranch or Pantano Stables, which offer group & private horseback trail rides. Coronado National Forest and the main Redington Pass entrance is only 5 miles due east on Tanque Verde Road, and offers hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, biking, and four-wheeling, as well as amazing waterfalls which feed the Tanque Verde Wash less than 10 minutes from your doorstep. The University of Arizona is only 13 miles due west.
Kilim Cottage has gorgeous views of the Rincon Mountains to the south, and the Santa Catalina Mountains to the north, Thimble Peak (a Tucson landmark) and Mt. Lemmon. Mt. Lemmon can see temperatures 30 to 40 degrees cooler than the valley, and brings you through 5 different ecosystems en route to the summit including beautiful pines and aspens, grasslands, a lake and recreational opportunities including numerous campgrounds, picnic sites and hiking trails. The road to the summit takes you through gorgeous rock formations and scenic views. At the peak is Summerhaven, which has restaurants, gift shops, etc. The 9,157' peak has a ski slope in the winter months (normally providing skiing & snowboarding from late December into March or April) and 'sky rides' on the ski lift in the summer months.
Closest public Golf Courses: Forty-Niners country club is literally across the street and ¼ mile down the road. Other nearby courses include Arizona National, Ventana Canyon, La Paloma, Fred Enke, Del Lago, and Randolph. Numerous other courses 20-30 miles away: The Golf Club at Dove Mountain (designed by Jack Nicklaus & host of The World Golf Championships Accenture Match Play), The Gallery Golf Club at Dove Mountain (acknowledged as one of Golfweek's Best Modern Courses), Highlands at Dove Mountain (Arthur Hills design), Tucson National (home of the PGA tour), The Pines, Arthur Pack.
25 minutes from central Tucson's famous 4th Avenue historic shopping district with eclectic boutiques, shops and cafes. 25 minutes from La Encantada Plaza with upscale retail shopping and fine-dining.
PET POLICY: While we are amenable to dogs or cats accompanying our guests, pet owners are responsible to clean up after their animals inside and outside the cottage, on the grounds and during any walks in the neighborhood. Pet owners are allowed to let their pet utilize the outer enclosed desert gardens but must not bring animals inside the inner back yard pool deck area to reduce pet waste and avoid unsanitary conditions in and around the pool. Pet owners are also fully responsible for their pets inside this backyard area and assume the risk posed to their animals from bobcats and/or coyotes in this area. Guests must keep these outer gates closed at all times and be aware that even closed gates may not prevent wild animals from accessing the back yard or prevent their animals from escaping. Outside of Kilim Cottage (residence) owners must keep their animals on a leash in accordance with Arizona Leash Laws, and must not allow their animals to roam freely elsewhere on the property, in the front courtyard, or in the neighborhood. As referenced in our rates, there is a $10 per day charge for pets to help offset the additional time and cleaning required to return the cottage, and any outdoor waste which might have been missed, back to its original condition. These charges are collected in cash at the beginning of the reservation.
