Overview

About the property

Perched on the bank of the Tippecanoe River, this house hangs in air like a treehouse, giving optimal river views. The house and river offer leisure and vigorous activities: There's a prolific flowering garden, a screened in porch, outdoor patios, swings, tubing, chair surfing(river lounging), fishing, hiking, bird watching, games, bon fires, nature walks to mention a few. Come be in the wild. A river resident and unmissed neighbor, the great blue heron, unknowingly catches the attention of a room, even if only flying by. A walk to one of the islands, or across the river, is always a fun, and sometimes tricky activity. The Tippecanoe River stands two and a half feet tall at normal height. There is a mile loop that takes you through the neighborhood, for those walkers and runners.

The open kitchen looks down upon the living and dining rooms, making it the central hub of the house. The concrete patio, under the house, is a great hangout year round...sun, rain, lightning storms. This house is a great getaway.

This is not a party house. No bachelor parties. No loud noise or fires after midnight due to close neighbors. People live on the Tippecanoe River. Please respect them and this beautiful land we all share.

There is a loft(3rd bedroom/2nd bath) that is available to rent for an additional $75/night.

Thank you

About Patrick Schuette

I grew up in Lafayette. For eight years in my teens and younger, I attended Camp Tecumseh, my neighbor now. I have such fond memories of this part of Indiana. On Friday nights, you can hear the drumming and cheers from closing camp fire, a joyous occasion.

I completely renovated this house, for it was deemed inhabitable.

Patrick Schuette purchased this house in 2007

Why Patrick Schuette chose Brookston

This property is unique by its remote location, big open rooms and spaces to enjoy your friends and family, and it's beautiful flowering garden that yields all summer long.

You will certainly see ducks, and geese, and the Great Blue Heron. In springtime, goslings are plentiful. If you are an early riser, expect to see a deer somewhere on the property, they are even sometimes spotted on an island in the river. There are lots of other birds and tiny critters that live along the Tippecanoe River. In 11 years, I have known of no negative encounters with wildlife in the area. Indiana Beach is 20 minutes north.

The house is close to a relatively shallow, slightly swift river. There are an assortment of activities to do. Even watching the river from a comfortable chair is remarkably soothing and rejuvenating.

The kitchen, living, and dining rooms are all connected, with the kitchen three steps up, to have excellent views of the main family spaces. The outdoor concrete patio, under the house, is the perfect place to enjoy being outside, while completely being shielded from the hot sun or a chaotic rain storm.

The garden has been a project of my fathers for many years, with my assistance. Flowers start blooming in spring and continue through late summer and fall. The assortment of hostas provide elegant flowers for months, as each bloom when they are ready. Resurrection Lilies pop out of the ground for only a week usually in late July.

Beautiful & relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

This was probably one of our favorite vacations! The house and setting are beautiful & it was so relaxing to be able to hear the water from the river throughout the house. The views from the house are amazing - pictures don’t do it justice - and even the rainy days were enjoyable as we could play games & puzzles on the screened in porch and still feel like we were enjoying the outdoors. We spent a week here and never missed watching TV as there was plenty to do and it was nice to unplug - I had brought iPads just in case since there was WiFi but never used them and the kids never even asked for them.

Our 2 year old and 6 year old had a great time playing in the water - we had brought a raft that had a bottom and they loved floating down and then having us pull them back up to go again! We brought water shoes as well which I recommend as it is rocky so sandals would be harder to walk in. Our lab also had fun and could have spent all day outside in the water & exploring the “islands” in front of the house. We did a canoe trip one day that took us right by the house and did a day trip to walk around Purdue’s campus but otherwise spent each day at the house. The house was well stocked with kitchen supplies, bath towels and even beach towels so I didn’t need to bring a lot of the “extra” stuff I had packed based on other rental houses we had gone to in the past. The charcoal grill was great to use for dinners and we had campfires several nights down by the water.

Overall, it was a wonderful vacation and we look forward to coming back again sometime!

Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

It might be out there, but I cannot imagine a better location on the Tippecanoe. We enjoyed some exhilarating fly fishing in the waters just beyond the banks of this property. The screened in porch was a great space for playing games, enjoying breakfast and a favorite napping location for all at one point or another during the trip. The rooms were clean and very spacious. The big windows made for spectacular views and a feeling of literally being on the water at all times. I would love to come back to this location. An amazing (I would say rare) getaway in the Midwest.

beautiful and scenic

  • 5 of 5

Loved this place. Watched the animals... deer crossing the river... two eagles soaring... the geese flew in every morning. The river is so peaceful. The big windows and the huge screen porch. Perfect for our getaway. Brookston is a cute little town with plenty of good places to eat. And West Lafayette is right down the road. I was shocked to find this beautiful place in the middle of corn and soybean country. Very pleased.

Relaxed, quiet getaway

  • 5 of 5

The house is very unique. Collective design and style. Comfortable layout on the river. We found it was delightful to tube down the calm river waters.

I would consider to go back again. Price was a bit high.
