Our farm site including our home and the cottage sits on a creek surrounded by 40 acres of wildflowers and prairie grasses. A great place to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of our lives and back into the nourishing embrace of nature. The cottage is a renovated granary with a rustic look and with all the modern conveniences. The original granary floor, barn wood and antiques mix with the modern comforts and conveniences. A loft accommodates a queen size bed and the living room has a comfortable queen size sleeper sofa. A fully equipped kitchen makes cooking easy and a full bath with shower will meet all your needs. Relax on the screened in porch or inside by the cast iron fireplace. Amenities include a flat screen TV connected to Dish network, Bluetooth enabled stereo system, DVD player, microwave, a Kuerig one cup coffee maker with an assortment of teas, coffee and hot chocolate. Starting in spring you can canoe on the creek that flows through our property and in winter enjoy ice skating and cross country skiing on it. The area is on a migratory route and is host to many birds and waterfowl. Deer walk through the yard and other wild life is frequently viewed. Especially alluring is the peace and quiet of this country respite.

About Vicky Radel
We both grew up in the area and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1972. After high school we moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where we lived for 30+ years and raised our family. Over the years we often spent time at Steve’s family farm. In the early 2000’s, with no one living there anymore, the farm site was becoming sadly dilapidated -- yet the land, trees and water continued to hold a great sense of peace and beauty. We decided to buy the farm site, not quite knowing what we would do with it but wanting to preserve and restore its beauty and share it with others. We cleaned up 100 years worth of metal and junk and planted 6 acres of wildflowers and grasses to add to the hundreds of trees that were already there. The process took several years. During that time we made weekend journeys to camp at the farm and do the work we could. We quickly found ourselves reluctant to leave at the end of the weekend. We decided to build a small home with plans to perhaps retire there. In 2007 we moved into our new home (although we are not retired) and have been here ever since. We are so grateful every day that we are able to live here, enjoying the quiet beauty of the prairie, its sunrises and sunsets, the star filled night skies, amazing birds and wildlife, and of course our pet chickens who entertain and feed us (eggs only!) We both have a keen interest in art. Steve graduated from University of Minnesota Morris with an art degree with a focus on sculpture and continues to explore his favorite medium. Vicky is pursuing her own interests in photography and encaustic painting (painting with pigmented wax). Our newest project on the farm is her new art studio. Vicky is also is an experienced practitioner of acupuncture and has a clinic in nearby Wheaton.

Why Vicky Radel chose Wheaton
Since our house is small, we realized we needed additional room for guests. We found an old granary a mile away and had it moved to our site. In the spirit of recycling, we transformed it into a beautiful guest cottage that we have decided to share with people looking for a peaceful retreat like ours. We love our decorating projects and have incorporated antiques and furniture from our parents and grandparents, barn doors from an uncle's abandoned farm 1 mile north of us and the horseshoe we found while digging the foundation. The original granary floor is refinished and a screen porch lends that relaxed country feel. The cottage is about 200 feet from the house, where sight lines and trees maintain a sense of privacy for both buildings.
What makes this Cottage unique
It is hard to find a truly quiet place in our busy world. A place where the city lights don't interfere with the view of the stars and a place you can find solitude if you wish. Long walks along the river (or on the river in winter) with the interplay of nature and wildlife are nourishing to the heart and soul. You can read or write a book while sitting on the porch or by the fireplace. You can watch the birds at the feeder or see water fowl at area refuges. Perhaps an eagle will fly over as you sit by the river or go out in the canoe. The deer walk through the property regularly. Whether it is a special event or a week long getaway the beauty of the prairie's big skies will greet you.

Such a lovely, comforting place to stay.
My husband and I had a great time relaxing at the Redpath Retreat. It was quiet, yet the sound of roosters in the morning was so fun. My husband gathered eggs, we played games, read, watched movies walked around the property, I took pictures and wrote poetry. It was nearly perfect! Too many bugs for me though, I didn't expect all the mosquitoes for being a mid September trip, I guess that's what happens when you come in from the city. We were even able to bring our dog, such a bonus. We will be going back!
Absolutely refreshing! Peaceful and cozy, enjoyed our whole stay. Will be back!
Great peaceful getaway
I visited the Redpath retreat to give myself and my dogs a break from city life and decompress after a summer filled with late nights and busy weekends.
My trip was exactly what I had hoped for. I enjoyed falling asleep at night to the crickets chirping and the subtle smell of the bonfire outside, the eggs, peaches and tomatoes that Vicky and Steve graciously shared with me, long walks along the path by the “crick” with my dogs, reading for hours and cooking at night in the very well equipped kitchen.
Vicky and Steve were excellent hosts, very happy to mingle or give space, whichever you prefer.
I hope to make my trip an anual one if they’ll have me and my big fur babies again.
Thanks Vicky and Steve for a great long weekend getaway!
The perfect setting for a quiet weekend with nature.
I had to work in the area, so I stayed during the week. It was so nice to come back after work to such a comfortable cabin on the beautifully maintained Redpath Retreat. Walking paths lined with wildflowers follow the creek which surrounds the property. My stay felt more like vacation than a work week. Vicky and Steve were amazing hosts and even stocked the cabin with the best farm fresh eggs for me everyday. Overall, the cabin was almost too comfortable for a work week but I can’t wait to get back for a long weekend.
Beautiful, Quiet and Quaint. Perfect place to relax.
I am currently counting down the days until we go back next summer. This adorable cottage was absolutely perfect, it was charming, full of history, quiet and stocked with everything you need. Chickens greet you every morning while you enjoy coffee on the cute screened in porch. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming while giving us our privacy to relax. Picked delicious tomatoes and basil from their garden and enjoyed fresh eggs from their chickens. Steve and Vicky are talented artists, photography and metal sculptures add a unique personal touch to the grounds. Bikes, canoe and yard games or books, movies and music...whatever your speed, they have something for everyone. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. The only negative is that we couldn't stay longer.
A beautiful place to stay! Very convenient for Birders going to the N. Ottawa Impound lot.
We really enjoyed our stay at Redpath Retreat. The owners are friendly but unobtrusive. The screened-in porch with a swing was really nice for relaxing and the grounds had some beautiful walking paths (use bug spray!!!). The full kitchen is supplied with a bit more than the basics usually found (butter and eggs from the chickens wandering around) and is really needed because there aren't many restaurants near and even fewer open on weekends. It's a perfect spot to use as a base for birdwatchers and it is not far from the North Ottawa Impound lot. We would definitly stay there again.
