About the property

A uniquely spacious family home, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms close to lake & park

Our home, Red Canoe Studio, is great for family and friends coming to Toronto. Whether it's to see your favourite teams play, artists, musicians, dancers, film festivals, theatre or shop, our beautifully spacious ground level loft is the perfect place to launch your visit. Our cleaning team, The Sunshine Girls, headed by Magdalena keep our home absolutely spotless and attractive for your arrival.

It was once a cider mill back in the 1800's when the neighborhood was an apple orchard. You feel like your in Italy sitting on the European style patio. Everyone who has stayed in our 2500 square foot warehouse conversion home in Toronto's east-end has commented on what a rare jewel our home is tucked away in the middle of a city. For sure, when we first discovered it, we knew we had found something truly "unique."

There is radiant floor heat throughout used in the late fall and winter, 14 foot ceilings, bamboo floors in the main space and polished dyed concrete, Italian style, in the bedrooms with throw rugs. There are three bedrooms; one queen master bedroom has an en suite with soaker tub, bidet and 2 person shower. Off of the bedroom is a walk in laundry room with sink and ironing board; one bedroom with a queen; one bedroom with two twins/ or a king. Our home sleeps six in the bedrooms but it will accommodate 8 altogether with a pull-out double in the living room and a cot as well. The second bathroom with a shower is off the living room. There is an upright piano for the musically inclined in the open concept living/kitchen/dinning area that is 1500 sq ft and a 10 person beautiful oak dinning table.

Enjoy our stereo with tons of CDs or plug in your own device for your own music. We have Wi-Fi and a 43" smart TV and access to Netflix/ YouTube along with a DVD collection. We still have them! From Winnie The Pooh and The Wizard Of Oz to a Ghibli Japanese animation film set to Blade Runner and the Matrix.

Outside from late spring to fall is our lush garden filled with ferns and hostas and other beauties. At your finger tips, outside the front door, is basil and mint for your cooking use as well. At the other end is our easy to use Weber barbie with a cast iron grill.

When you come to Red Canoe Studio you don't need to worry about a thing. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, towels, wash clothes and quality sheets are provided. We'll get you a toothbrush if you forget yours.

Also know that we have a massage therapist/yoga teacher who is willing to come to Red Canoe Studio (upon availability of your visit) to help keep you tuned up and healthy. You just need to ask and we can help hook you up.

We are a smoke free and pet free space, friendly for environmentally sensitive folks and wheelchair friendly.

Generally arrivals are from 3 pm on and departures at 10 am but we are flexible and if we can accommodate our guests schedules we will try.

Jerry and Kim Brodey purchased this house in 2005

Why Jerry and Kim Brodey chose Toronto

We love being near the beach and in 2005 we found this unusual property which is a 20-minute walk to the beach and an old fashioned boardwalk. Back in the 1800's this neighborhood an apple orchard and our home was the old cider mill. In those days, cider mills were often the gathering places where on cold winter evenings the fiddles would come out and an evening of stories and songs would be enjoyed. We bought the property so we could offer a variety arts events, workshops and special gatherings that we could never have in our previous house. It was a dream come true.

Wonderful space to stay

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 stayed at the Red Canoe for our third time, and loved it as usual. We were joined by 3 others during the daytime and the space worked well. The big open room is just perfect for our group to gather for meals and conversation, and a sense of being together. We were comfortable and at home for the 4 days we visited. Kim and Jerry were very helpful with our needs.

Best Christmas Ever!!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a single floor space to host a family Christmas weekend that would accommodate 7 adults including an elderly person with mobility issues plus a gaggle of visiting friends and family who would be joining us for Christmas dinner – the Red Canoe amazingly accommodated our every need and then some!

From it’s welcoming entryway to the warm and comfortably cozy open concept main living area, spacious bedrooms with very comfortable beds, well appointed and spacious bathrooms plus all the fantastic and plentiful amenities including great kitchen appliances, cookware, plenty of glasses, cutlery and plates, comfortable seating including extra table and chairs, and plenty of towels for all! Not only were able to prepare and host Christmas dinner for 17, the layout also allowed us to be together as we wanted even within an open concept, with plenty of space in the kitchen, dining and living room as well as quite bedrooms for some alone time. Our group included adults, some who have not seen each other since the summer, as well as teens and young adults most who were just home from being away at school - the space gave us all a chance to catch up, tell stories, play games and watch our favourite movies late into the night.

Kim and Jerry were wonderfully accommodating and did a great job of communicating with us prior to our arrival and were available to direct us during our stay as needed. Jerry even loaded the cd player with a music selection that we enjoyed all weekend long!

The Brodey’s and the Red Canoe made it possible for us to have a most memorable Christmas with our elderly mom and all the family together for the first time in many years - everyone commented on not just the lovey space that allowed us to be together but also the feeling of being truly at home. If the Brodey’s will have us, we’ve already begun to make plans to do it again next year!

with warmest regards,

The DeMarchi-Anderson Family (D, Gina, James, Jamie, Joe, Jessie and Edda)

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Jerry and Kim were marvelous - very warm and inviting, easy to get hold of and quick to respond if we had any questions. We had two parents and five grown children and the space suited us perfectly - very spacious yet cozy at the same time. There is lots of room to be together and relax, plus quiet bedrooms for resting. The radiant floor heating kept us warm and comfortable despite the chilly winter weather. We enjoyed the piano and musical instruments, books and available music. The dining table seats ten - perfect for the night we chose to have pizza in. Lots of space to stretch out and appreciate the amazing artwork. It was impeccably clean, with ample towels and linens provided. It was well-equipped; Jerry and Kim have been very thorough in making sure you have everything you need. They asked us in advance if we wished to have a pull-out lounge/ bed placed in a bedroom rather than the living area so that all could sleep in the bedrooms, which worked out great. All of the beds were very comfortable! We chose to make the short drive (10 to 15 minutes) into the city for the theatre, CN tower and Hockey Hall of Fame, and found travel to be convenient and parking reasonably priced. Having off-street parking at the Red Canoe definitely made it easier as well, no need to hunt for a spot to park when we returned. We could also walk to the convenience store. A great way to visit Toronto and see both downtown and some neighborhoods. We would highly recommend the Red Canoe Studio!

Very comfortable well equipped apartment,

  • 5 of 5

This apartment really felt like home, spotlessly clean, no outside noise at all and comfortable. It has absolutely everything you could need in the kitchen and a generous supply of shampoo, washing detergent etc, perhaps take a beach towel that's all really. Jerry left us milk and breakfast for our first morning which was a lovely touch. The train station is a 15 min walk away and the bus or tram 1 minute at the end of the road. There is a convince store very close by and a supermarket by the station. We managed easily without a car for several days of our ten day stay and are glad we took public transport from the airport as not only was it hassle free and cheap (bus to pearson then subway to woodbine then walk!) but avoided the city driving which we found quite stressful coming from the uk. It's also easier to use public transport into the city, about 30- 40 mins on bus into centre.

We were a family group of 5, including 3 young adults 18,19 and 21, initially I was a little worried about the rules re slippers etc, but let me reassure you the area is large spacious and it's no hassle taking your shoes off, there are a few low down ornaments etc but I would not be worried taking younger children. The air con and fans work well and beds are comfortable. We only met Jerry and Kim a few times and they made us feel really welcome and were very helpful, the balance was just right, I personally don't like owners who seem to be checking on you and they certainly did not. There is plenty of tourist information at the apartment but it could do with a little more local info, maps where to buy food, restaurants, how to use the trams/buses etc for the non Canadian traveller as we found this all quite confusing initially-thank goodness for a good wifi connection so we could google. We loved Toronto city and used a city pass to get the most from our stay, the aquarium and Zoo (long way out but worth it) were particularly good and a massive hit with everyone. Casa Loma interesting and the set for several films including x men and Scott pilgrim- again a hit with teens, we drove to Niagra and had a night in a hotel down there as wanted to see the fireworks (not every night so check ahead) which made the whole thing more relaxed, everywhere is a long way in Canada! Also enjoyed a visit to the Saturday market in St Jacobs and a trip on a horse drawn carriage round a Mennonite farm really interesting- about a hour and a half drive out.

Thank you again Jerry and Kim x

Amazing is the only word I can think of!!!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing is the only word I can think of, thank you Jerry & Kim for making our stay in Toronto easy. We were travelling with my mother who is in a wheel chair. Your property was perfect, easy to get in and out of, lots of space for the wheel chair. Jerry was very helpful with suggestions and very accommodating as we had a a large group of old friends over one night. One of our visitors was also in a wheel chair. Close to the beach, many restaurants and other amenities. If our travels find us in need of accommodations in Toronto again we look up if you have availability first. We LOVED the coffee you provided for us during our stay and certainly appreciate you picking up some groceries before our arrival.

All the best, Miguel, Richard, Julieta and Grace

Beautiful space..Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

The red canoe studio is one of the nicest properties we've ever rented. The space is open, friendly and very accommodating. It slept our family of five very comfortably.

Jerry did a fabulous job of communicating and welcoming us prior to our arrival and even had some fresh quality grocery items for us.

We were impressed by the amenities of the studio. Beautiful glass and dishware, extremely comfortable beds and tons of towels and seating space. A personal favorite was the very large master bathroom with a tiled walk-in shower. We felt like we were staying at a family member's house.

The location was also convenient. Very close to toronto's largest beach and about 15 minutes to downtown. It's only a couple minutes to Lake Shore Blvd so heading into downtown was a breeze and easy to navigate even at night.

I highly recommend this property for your Toronto visit. We'll definitely return.
