Our home, Red Canoe Studio, is great gathering place for family and friends coming to Toronto. Whether it's to see your favourite teams play, artists, musicians, dancers, film festivals, theatre or shop, our beautifully spacious ground level loft is the perfect place to launch your visit. Our cleaning team, The Sunshine Girls, headed by Magdalena keep our home absolutely spotless and attractive for your arrival.
It was once a cider mill back in the 1800's when the neighborhood was an apple orchard. You feel like your in Italy sitting on the European style patio. Everyone who has stayed in our 2500 square foot warehouse conversion home in Toronto's east-end has commented on what a rare jewel our home is tucked away in the middle of a city. For sure, when we first discovered it, we knew we had found something truly "unique."
There is radiant floor heat throughout used in the late fall and winter, 14 foot ceilings, bamboo floors in the main space and polished dyed concrete, Italian style, in the bedrooms with throw rugs. There are three bedrooms; one queen master bedroom has an en suite with soaker tub, bidet and 2 person shower. Off of the bedroom is a walk in laundry room with sink and ironing board; one bedroom with a queen; one bedroom with two twins/ or a king. Our home sleeps six in the bedrooms but it will accommodate 7 altogether with an extra if you need it with an extra cot.The second bathroom with a shower is off the living room. There is an upright piano for the musically inclined in the open concept living/kitchen/dinning area that is 1500 sq ft and a 10 person beautiful oak dinning table.
Note that we are a short walk around the corner to Cassels Avenue Playground ( and splashpad), a beautiful 1.6 hectare treed park. And, it's a 15-minute walk through the back neighbourhood to the beach and boardwalk (or a 7-min car ride)
Enjoy our stereo with tons of CDs or plug in your own device for your own music. We have Wi-Fi and a 43" smart TV and access to Netflix/ YouTube along with a DVD collection. We still have them! From Winnie The Pooh and The Wizard Of Oz to a Ghibli Japanese animation film set to Blade Runner and the Matrix.
Outside from late spring to fall is our lush garden filled with ferns and hostas and other beauties. At your finger tips, outside the front door, is basil and mint for your cooking use as well. At the other end is our easy to use Weber barbie with a cast iron grill.
When you come to Red Canoe Studio you don't need to worry about a thing. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, towels, wash clothes and quality sheets are provided. We'll get you a toothbrush if you forget yours.
Also know that we have a massage therapist/yoga teacher who is willing to come to Red Canoe Studio (upon availability of your visit) to help keep you tuned up and healthy. You just need to ask and we can help hook you up.
We are a smoke free and pet free space, friendly for environmentally sensitive folks and wheelchair friendly.

Jerry and Kim Brodey purchased this House in 2005
Why Jerry and Kim Brodey chose East Danforth
We love being near the beach and in 2005 we found this unusual property which is a 20-minute walk to the beach and an old fashioned boardwalk. Back in the 1800's this neighborhood an apple orchard and our home was the old cider mill. In those days, cider mills were often the gathering places where on cold winter evenings the fiddles would come out and an evening of stories and songs would be enjoyed. We bought the property so we could offer a variety arts events, workshops and special gatherings that we could never have in our previous house. It was a dream come true. Now we offer it to people who want more than a hotel room to hang out in.

Large, spacious and very quiet!
The Red Canoe studio is quite a large building, with a huge great room for living, dining and kitchen. The kitchen is very well equipped and gracious, and the dining table and area, also quite gracious. The enormous living area has great acoustics and absorbs the sounds of daily living quite nicely. Bedrooms were very large and spacious.
There were lots of games and books, especially for the children, which was a very nice touch. Note to families with active children - there are many sculptures and mobiles around, as well as a large shrine-like installation with several sculptures and items on display... we blocked this area off with some extra dining chairs and that worked nicely.
We did not meet the owners, but they communicated through email and there were no issues that needed addressing. The next door neighbour handled the key check in. There was laneway parking for our two cars and it's close to coffee shops and not far from the lovely Beaches area. Thanks for comfortable stay!
Great comfortable place to stay with great hosts.
This is a great place to stay with a family or larger group.
My family had a great, relaxing time at this rental.
Enjoyed having enough space to have a family breakfast in the morning, or an evening watching movies or planning our next day in Toronto.
Close to the beach and downtown, but also close to great local eats and groceries.
This is a great place.
A quirky but comfortable stay, with good location
In comparison with the hotel rooms we visited on our trip the studio offered our family great space, good sofas to relax and a kitchen. The location was great for the street car, 10mins for the subway and 20-25mins for the beach. Kim and Jerry offered a very warm welcome and told us of many good restaurants in the area, although we didn't go there. Our only disappointments however were the lack of natural light in the living space and also the presence of a vertical steel girder which was a little surprising!
Staying at the Red Canoe was exceptional from the time we received the keys until we left one week later.
It was spotless! The beds were comfortable with clean linens. Supplies were adequate and the basic kitchen needs were supplied, plus some. It was roomy and unique with pictures and statues from around the world. The pictures do not do it justice.
Jerry was available from helping us with our luggage to any needs we had during our stay. (We were a family of octarians). We felt like family.
We will return to the Red Canoe in 2 years for our next birthday celebration and recommend it highly.
You, your sisters and brother Keith were truly a wonderful part of our summer. We were so pleased we found each other. Let us know when you want to come and we'll set it up again. All the best in the leg of the journey. Thanks for your glowing review.

Perfect Location; Amazing Home!
We rented the Red Canoe for a family reunion during which time we celebrated my parents' 60th wedding anniversary. We traveled from Texas, Florida, Connecticut and North Carolina for this reunion. My parents, two elderly aunts and two elderly uncles stayed at the Red Canoe whilst the 7 in the "younger" generation stayed at the Days Inn about a mile away (not a bad walk, though we had a car). All 12 of us used the Red Canoe as a base for morning coffee and breakfast, as well as for evening get-togethers and late-night card games.
My mother, who was a nurse, is very picky about cleanliness. She kept going on and on about how immaculate and well-put together everything is at the Red Canoe. We travel together often and I have never heard her say this about any place we have stayed.
The space is beautifully decorated with original artwork. The furnishings are comfortable and of high quality. The kitchen is well-stocked with dishes, serving platters, silverware and anything you'd need for cooking. My only concern for those renting the Red Canoe is that everything is very nice--as such, I don't think this is a good space for people with young children or for those looking for a vacation rental in which one can just relax and be slovenly. However, it was a perfect space for our family.
Jerry is very easy to work with and gave us great tips on places to eat and visit. We all wished we had more time to really explore the area (would probably take a month!).
The Red Canoe is located in a quiet neighborhood with wonderful small restaurants. The best night of our entire vacation was spent at a Zante Bistro, a Greek restaurant about a block away. Peter, the restaurant owner, treated us as he would his own family. The Hungarian restaurant nearby also looked promising.
The off-road parking in the driveway was great. There is public transportation nearby; however, given the advanced ages of many in our group, we relied on Uber to get most of the group to and from downtown Toronto ($17 for 4 people each way). I brought my bike and it is a beautiful bike ride from the Red Canoe into downtown.
Again, we could not have asked for a more perfect spot for my family to gather.
Having your family in our home was truly a delight. All i can say, in the short time I had to show your mom and dad around, is they are sweet, thoughtful and
engaged people who don't miss a trick. I also liked hearing that Peter, owner of Zante Bistro raved about your family. You made a memorable dent in our neighbourhood. Come again any time. Jerry and Kim
Check out - Toronto.com You want to explore the Beach area. We've lived here for years and there's great restaurants on Queen Street and lovely parks. Greek town is minutes away west on Danforth. Little India is a 20 minute walk or 6 minute car ride. Take in a Blue Jay's game at Rogers Centre - Or go to the Toronto Islands for a family picnic. It's so easy to toddle around on the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) for everything. Close to our home you can catch a bus, street car or subway.

Or a few block further west the Corner Pub has awesome locally sourced hamburgers, We are artist/musicians and often host events, concerts, poetry readings and story telling, in this very large living room. Minutes away are two farmers markets on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3-7pm. Or, you could walk 15 minutes south to Queen St, with great restaurants catering to just about any taste from Mexico to Japan, Middle East to Italian, as well as boutique shopping.
