About Bear Den Cabins Brolene Gerwig

We, Chuck and Brolene Gerwig, have lived in the community on Victory Road for 23 years, in fact we met while working at Victory Bible Camp at the end of the road! It has been a great place to raise our 4 kids! After having worked at the camp for years Chuck started a construction business in the Glacier View Community, building log and frame houses, remodeling, plowing snow, and little bit of everything! He has had the opportunity to snowmachine the Iditarod trail, helping to film the 2004 Iditarod Dog Sled Race. In 2014 he was featured on Building Alaska. The log home he and his crew built sits beside the Matanuska Glacier. Brolene has so enjoyed raising the kids with this incredible nature right outside our door. She tries to keep up with all that Chuck does, and each week does a day of school nursing in 2 small local schools. The family has been blessed to hunt, snowmachine, 4 wheel, canoe, kayak, and hiked in the area. You don't need to go far to be astounded with the views!

Bear Den Cabins Brolene Gerwig purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Bear Den Cabins Brolene Gerwig chose Alaska

We bought this property in the fall of 2014 from our dear neighbor who lived here for 36 years. She and her husband bought this, one of the first cabins built on the road, and turned it into their gracious home, which welcomed many over the years. Now we welcome others to come experience the Glacier View area with its beauty and charm.

What makes this cabin unique

Coming to the Bear Den Cabins' Den opens up the chance to experience the rural mountain setting of Glacier View, Alaska. Mountain hiking, canoeing or kayaking at Long Lake, Weiner Lake, or the lakes up the road, glaicer hiking on the Matanuska Glacier, white water rafting on the Matanuska River, all are just minutes away. Several local lodges and Cafes are nearby (10-20 miles). Many things to do. Or just rest in the tranquil quiet of the country road community. Come enjoy it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family of 4 originally booked at another place, but someone messed up the booking. We ended up here. What a wonderful surprise! We love everything about this cabin and took a lot of pictures.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Worked well for our group

  • 5 of 5

Even though our stay was for only one night, we enjoyed Bear Den cabin and it fit the needs of our group well (we used it to be close to the start of a bike race the next day). It's a great location for those exploring the area--very close to Matanuska Glacier and other activities.

We had 5 adults (1 couple, 3 others) and teenager, but there were places for everyone to sleep, including cots in both the upstairs bedroom and the living room as well as the sleeper sofa. We had had some warmer weather in the days before our stay, so--as is typical in Alaska homes--it was a bit warm in the cabin initially. But opening windows and some time cooled things off nicely. The cabin also had some fans in it that we used, particularly in the upstairs bedroom.

One nice touch that tourists not accustomed to the long Alaska days will appreciate--there are heavy curtains available in all the rooms (or at least the 2 bedrooms) that do a good job of darkening the rooms.

Although there's only 1 bathroom, the shower/toilet area has a separate bifold door from the main bathroom door so that the bathroom sink can be used at the same time.

Brolene Gerwig was very helpful when I called her before our stay to make sure the timing of our arrival and departure would be okay.

Awesome cabin! Best Cabin we stayed at during our 15 days in Alaska July 2017.

  • 5 of 5

Great cabin in a beautiful setting! Well equipped, full kitchen, late model washer/dryer. Decorated in Alaskan motif. This cabin has it all. I would enthusiastically recommend this cabin to anyone needing accommodations in the area. Very easy to find...right off the highway & minutes from the Matanuska Glacier. Terrific place to stay! Thanks Brolene & Chuck!

welcoming and fun

  • 5 of 5

Appreciated the great communication from the owners through the whole process. This is a wonderful retreat convenient to the highway and tucked away in a very nice setting. Had a moose come hang out for awhile just outside the cabin for an extra surprise. Enjoyed the fire pit and found everything we needed inside as well. Definitely recommending Bear Cabins.

We are just 10 miles from the spectacular Matanuska Glacier, the largest Glacier in Alaska that can be reach by vehicle. It is 26 miles long and 4 miles at the terminus. A highlight of any trip is a chance to hike on this incredible mountain of ice, or to hike beside it on Lion's Head mountain for out-of-this-world views of the glacier, the mountain ranges surrounding you, and the braided Matanuska River. There is hiking right out your door, up the Talkeetna Range, or along the Glenn Highway, and down to the Matanuska River. We are one half mile from Victory Bible Camp founded in 1947. The Den is one of the first cabins on Victory Road, built in 1972.
