In the heart of the Garfagnana, 1 hour 15 minutes from Lucca, Casa Cascianella sits above the tiny village of Cascianella, surrounded by chestnut woods and mountains. Quiet, scenic and comfortable, with hilltop-village and mountain views from almost every spot.


The house
A well-presented, two-level home you can enter from either floor.

Living area: open fireplace, Smart TV, PlayStation 4, large corner sofa plus a two-seater.
Kitchen-diner: light, well equipped and opening to the garden. Dishwasher, washing machine, oven and hob, microwave, fridge-freezer and dining table.
Bathrooms: four in total - two en-suite shower rooms upstairs, one family bathroom with bathtub upstairs, and one ground-floor shower room.

Very peaceful and tranquil, yet walkable to the small village of Casciana (bar and shop) in about 10-15 minutes. Piazza al Serchio is under a 5-minute drive for supermarkets, traditional shops, a small Tuesday market, bars, restaurants and a train station for easy exploring. 10 minute drive gets you to Camporgiano with its bars, pizzerias/restaurants, local shops and train station.

Hidden gem in Northern Tuscany

This house has everything you can wish for and more. It is perfectly located if you like peace and quiet. We were a group of 5 adults and we found this property to be very spacious with four bedrooms.

First Tuscany family holiday

Beautiful location, lovely pool and somewhere for my 91 year old mum to sit in the shade and watch her three great grand daughters in the pool. House very well equipped. Roads quite challenging so glad we had a small car when meeting others on the road!!! Giovanna extremely helpful and sorts any problem out very quickly.

The property is very basic and simple. We expected a bit more for the price.

We enjoyed the pool and the view. For our two week stay it was too secluded and the interior too basic. As the house is in the mountains it involves a lot of driving through the mountains to do sightseeing. The interior is not luxurious but rather simple and clean. There was no manual for the house equipment available, we had trouble with the stove, the TV and DVD which we could not get to work properly. Again for the price asked we had expected more. There is a lot of nature (deers walk by which is nice but there is also a beehive next door and quite a few geckos which our kids enjoyed a lot).

Thank you for your review and we are glad to hear you enjoyed the views, pool, & the cleanliness of the property, but it is a shame that that you did not totally appreciate the location & peace & quiet offered at this mountain retreat. We were not surprised at all to receive such a poor review in contrast to those 4/5 star reviews on the site, as you intimated as much via e mail when we politely asked you to reimburse the owner for smashing the brand new glass splash back in the newly refurbished kitchen & not reporting it to us, so we found no splash back and lots of glass under the cooker on changeover day. Thank you however for arranging to reimburse the owner in retrospect. Until receiving the e mail from you intimating that the review would be poor because we followed up on the damage, we had understood that you were enjoying the villa especially since you had not mentioned to the Property Manager who you saw on various occasions that you were unhappy with anything at all. I am afraid there is no manual for the TV/DVD & Amazon firestick but when you called to ask how to work it, an English speaking colleague arrived within 15 mins to show you how to use it & we understood there were no further issues. The brand new oven is a standard 5 ring gas, with very simple controls, chosen specifically for its quality & ease of use. It is felt a manual will serve no purpose but we would have been happy to explain it to you on request. It is a shame you felt the property to be expensive. In our opinion, in comparison to other 4 bed 4 bath properties in the area, the price of this house is very competitive. On searching the entire site in the Province of Lucca for the same facilities, I believe only one house displays as being more keenly priced. Despite this, there is the benefit of free internet, amazon TV, brand new well equipped kitchen for this season, pool cleaning every 2 /3 days, large sofas not often seen in Italian country rentals, English speaking Property Manager available 24/7 etc etc. I feel for the owners who have put in a lot of work here, with new kitchen, flooring & shower room this year, & they do not in my opinion deserve such a review – I don’t think we have ever had a 2 star review on any of our houses, & certainly not this one, even prior to recent refurb. It would have been helpful to know exactly what you felt was basic so this can be rectified since it seems that the comments are rather vague. Lorraine at tuscan-retreats

Great villa in rural location, relax and unwind

Lovely villa away from the hustle and bustle, if you want to relax and get away from it all. The view is fantastic, and ever changing from sunrise to sunset. The villa has 4 good sized bedrooms, ample inside and outside eating areas, the kitchen is well stocked and there is barbecue outside for lovely alfresco dining. With regard to outside eating, unfortunately there was a number of wasps on a daily basis, which could take the shine of an otherwise enjoyable experience. The property is isolated and is reached via many winding roads, which I have no issue with but can make daily sightseeing tiresome. Just to follow on from a previous guest review, as the villa is on the side of a hill the sun sets behind the hill in the early evening and therefore can be quite chilly on occasion, but again we did not find this an issue. The one major supermarket is 40 minutes away and a minimarket approx. 10 minutes away. Overall we had a lovely experience, I like to explore new places but if someone suggested returning here then I would be very happy to do so.

For future guests, do note there are also large supermarkets just outside Castelnuovo and also Pieve Fosciana, both of which are a 20 minute drive away and a reasonably large supermarket in Piazza in Serchio just over a 10 minute drive. The area doesnt generally tend to be waspy and we find it much more of a problem in the UK for eating out. For some reason this year, later in August we also experienced quite alot of wasps, which we think must have been due to an unusually mild winter? We are happy these insects didnt put you off and that you would still be very happy to come again!

Haus in toller Lage

Das Haus hat wirklich eine hervorragende Lage in idyllischer Umgebung und Ruhe pur. Wenn man Wert legt auf die Ausstattung bezüglich des Entertainments so wie es in der Beschreibung steht, sollte man wissen, dass es kein Netflix und keine Playstation gibt und der Fernseher auch nicht wirklich funktioniert. Als Selbstversorger muss man eigentlich einen etwas größeren Supermarkt z.B. Conad aufsuchen, das bedeutet aber eine halbe Stunde Autofahrt entfernt. Wir hatten leider etwas Pech mit einer Mücken- und Bremsenplage, aber das ist eben Natur, dafür kann ja keiner was. Fliegengitter in den Schlafzimmern wären super, wir haben selbst provisorisch eins montiert und dann wieder entfernt, würde ich jedem empfehlen. Ordentlich gereinigt war es bei uns nicht, aber vielleicht war das nur eine Ausnahme. Insgesamt besticht dieses Haus aber durch die wirklich tolle Lage, findet man nicht so oft.

toller Urlaub - abseits in der Natur

Unser Urlaub war super schön. Das Haus liegt sehr abseits und man ist ganz für sich. Entspannung pur. Der Service für den Pool war sehr sehr gut u hatte eine super Qualität. Die Zufahrt ist eine kleine Herausforderung und nicht für jedes Auto geeignet. Wir hätten uns gewünscht, das es Fliegengitter vor den Fenstern gegeben hätte, da da doch allerlei Getier unterwegs ist. Tagsüber ruhig und nachts erwacht der Wald zum Leben.

Tolles Objekt in herrvorragender Lage

Das Ferienhaus ist an einem ruhigen, abgelegenem Ort in der Toskana. Der Pool und der Ausblick sind überragend. Einkaufsmöglichkeiten nur mit dem Auto zu erreichen. Die Einrichtung ist einfach gehalten, es ist jedoch alles vorhanden was benötigt wird. Wer Ruhe und Erholung sucht, ist hier genau richtig.

Mooi huisje in rustige omgeving.

Deze vakantiewoning ligt misschien wel wat achteraf in een klein gehucht, maar is heel mooi en door de ligging zeer rustig met een mooi uitzicht over de heuvels van de Gargagna. Verder bezit De woning een mooi zwembad met voldoende ligstoelen.

Super séjour entre amis et famille

Nous avons séjourné une semaine durant le mois d'août 2020 dans un cadre enchanteur à l'abri des regards. C'était fabuleux. La maison n'est pas évidente à trouver à l'arrivée mais elle est charmante. Seul petit bémol, la propriété est dans l'ombre à partir de 17h. Ceci dit, l'ombre est la bienvenue et permet également de passer des nuits plus agréable. Je recommande cet endroit. Les gens du village à côté sont aissi adorables.

The house is in good standard and well though through. Fabulous views and surroundings. Only downside - which is also noticeable is the fact that there’s no sun after 5pm as the sun sets behind the trees in the back of the house leaving the evenings on the cool side and shortening the sun/pooling time

Top Unterkunft mit herrlichem Pool!!!

Das Haus hat alles, was man benötigt. Wir waren mit 8 Personen hier (2 Familien mit je zwei Kindern). In den 4 Schlafzimmern hatte jeder seinen Platz. 2 Schlafzimmer waren sogar mit eigener Toilette und Dusche. Das Wohnzimmer ist sehr geräumig (Fernseher sogar mit Netflix) und die Küche ist toll ausgestattet. Der Poolbereich mit überdachter Terasse ist sehr schön. Nebenan gleich ein Grill, so dass wir herrliche Abende hier hatten. In ca. 1km Entfernung ist ein kleiner Supermarkt, so dass wir früh immer einige typische italienische Backwaren zum Frühstück hatten. Ansonsten ist hier fußläufig viel Natur zu erreichen. Für alles andere benötigt man ein Auto. Aber das sieht man ja vorher. Kurzum: eine herrliche Unterkunft in tollen Natur. Empfehlenswert!!!

Perfect holiday home

We had an amazing week in Cascianella! The house, located in this pretty village is just perfect for a relaxing week. Together with friends, 4 adults and 4 kids, we very much enjoyed the pool and the terrace in the schade of the trees with amazing views of the mountains. The house is clean and wel equipped for 8. The house is even prettier than on the pictures. The small café/shop ‘Maria’ (700m) is perfect for a cappuccino, fresh bread and delicious prosciutto. For other groceries and pizza the car is needed (you Will find everything you need in the villages around from 10’ to 30’ drive). The touristic places are a bit further away (30-90’) but the road is a pretty journey. We followed the tips we got from our contact person and enjoyed good restaurants (bistecca!), wine and olive oil tasting and canyoning. The landscape is different from south Tuscany but great to enjoy the Italian way of life and wonderful nature. A big thank you to Lorraine and Giovanna!

This is a beautiful villa with stunning views that you never tire of. The pool is perfect to cool down on a hot day. Everything you need is here as long as you do a big supermarket shop on your way to the property. It is very rural and the roads are narrow and windy so you need to be aware of that, we enjoyed the 10 min walk to the next village for bread and a coffee every morning, for anything else you will need to drive. If, like us, you are after a relaxing week with beautiful views this place is perfect.

Amazing location villa.

Eight adults celebrating a Golden Wedding. We had a very relaxing holiday. The villa is very high up in the mountains with great views. Very narrow steep roads and bends to take into account. The pool is very comfortable for eight adults. We found a little shop in the village where we were able to buy most things. It is also a bar and restaurant so we booked an evening meal there. They could not do enough to make our evening perfect, even catering for two vegetarian. The pool is perfect, lots of sun loungers and chairs around the large table. The barbecue is perfect. We all ventured out twice during the week. Once to a local town where there was a market which was very enjoyable stocking up with fruit and salad. The second day was a train ride to Lucca which was great. Six of us had been there before. It was so easy to get times and tickets and we had a super day out. Now we know the route to this Villa it is somewhere we would go again. So relaxing. I would recommend as ideal for a party of friends similar to our age.

Beautiful, quiet, relaxed home!

Nice and relaxed villa in the mountains, great pool, nice terrace, good rooms, great views and a nice kitchen. We had a lovely time with another family. The kids were enjoying themselves immensly!

Breathtaking!

Stayed here for a week- which wasn't long enough. We had the most relaxing, peaceful time here. The villa is very well equipped, clean and modern. The views are stunning. This is a real 'get away from it all' location, although there are towns nearby if needed. For us , it was a chance to relax and unwind, lay back in the sunshine, with just the birds singing, breeze in the trees and the trickling of the pool. Perfection.

Amazing view!

We spent three wonderful weeks here in September -13. We were a party of 2-5 adults and 2-5 children aged 1-6. (Our family of 2 adults and 2 children rented the property and then we had friends and family come and visit). The fact that the property has so many bedrooms and bathrooms made it very easy to have friends visiting, without getting too crowded, there was room for everyone. There was lots of space for the kids to play both indoors and outdoors. The view from the property is breathtaking and the small village Cascianella is incredibly picturesque. There is lots to see in the area. The driving is however terrible... We spent most of our time in the pool, which is kept nice and clean by the sweet lady who looks after the house for the owners. She helped us with everything and really did everything to make our stay live up to our expectations. There was only one thing that wasn't perfect for us : The property is situated on an eastern slope which meant that the sun set at about 4:30 PM in September, and then it got a bit cold, I'm sure this is not an issue if you plan to visit in the summer! We would definitely recommend this property!

Yes, by September the days are getting shorter and the Garden loses the sun much earlier than in those weeks closer to the longest day. For eating outside at that time of year cardigans and longer skirts/trousers are needed in the evenings (although not always the case). Luckily for indoor relaxing there are large comfy sofas.... In high season the garden has sun for longer and often when the sun goes down it is a bit of a relief! Italian drivers can be a bit of a challenge, as can hilly/bendy roads for those not used to them, but it is rare that 2 cars can't easily pass each other, even for the last 10 minutes of the journey when one turns off from the Main Road. We are happy that your enjoyed your three weeks and also that Giovanna was such a help to you!!

A lovely property in a fantastic setting

The villa lived up to all our expectations. It is exactly as described, clean and very well maintained. The views from the bedrooms and the swimming pool area of the terraced garden are stunning. There were eight of us - 4 adults and 4 children - so the accommodation was perfect, with two en-suite bedrooms for the adults. The other main bathroom on the bedroom floor is huge with a bath, and the downstairs shower room is ideal for popping in from the pool and garden as necessary during the day. There is plenty of wardrobe and drawer space in the bedrooms. One of the non ensuite bedrooms has a lovely little balcony with table and chairs. All the bedrooms are a good size and would be equally ideal for four adult couples. We noted there was a travel cot available in one of the bedrooms, plus a good selection of books and games which we made use of. There was plenty of spare bedding in the cupboards if needed, and a large bath towel plus small towel per person were provided. Downstairs is also as described in the brochure - good sized lounge with huge L-shaped sofa on which all eight of us could sit in comfort, plus another smaller sofa. Sky tv, lots of dvds and play station also provided. The kitchen had everything we needed - plenty of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, and a large kitchen table, plus full size cooker, large fridge with freezer, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher. We used the even larger outside table shown in the photo all the time because the weather was beautiful. The pool is very clean with steps at one end and about 1.2 metres deep. There are no shops within walking distance so we took it in turns to drive to Camporgiano or Piazza Al Serchio to stock up on groceries and we mainly had barbeques when we were at the property in the evenings. The large fridge made it possible to shop for several days worth of food. As we did not have any problems we did not test the customer service by the owner, but from email correspondence before and after our visit, I am sure any problems would have been dealt with promptly. Both Camporgiano and Piazza Al Serchio have railway stations from where you can visit many other places much more easily than driving and parking. We took the train from Piazza Al Serchio to Castelnuovo for the market on Thursday, which we all enjoyed, and there is plenty of free parking at the station. All in all we had a great time and would definitely recommend this property.
