About Tom Watkins

Writer who lived in Atlanta for 24 years now working in New York.

Tom Watkins purchased this house in 2005

Why Tom Watkins chose Buckhead

Built in 1950, this house is a mid-century modern designed by an acolyte of Frank Lloyd Wright. Clad in cedar shingles and overlooking a park, it is barely visible from the street, as the architect intended. The views are intended for those who live inside -- the house faces east, so you can see the sun rise through the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the trees and azaleas that dot the property. The house was designed to allow maximum light -- the sky pours in through 8 skylights, and the walls of windows at the front and rear of the house mean you can literally see through the house.

Though just 8 minutes from downtown, you are truly in the woods here.

In addition to the three bedrooms, the house has an office with two desks.

What makes this house unique

The neighborhood is quiet and safe, yet minutes from the commercial centers of the city.

Very large space; lovely views from the living room. Lots of privacy between rooms.

This house is in a lovely area of Atlanta. Close to restaurants. Right near the park. We had a very comfortable stay. Able to visit with family and see sights.

It is a very steep driveway going in - so just be prepared (especially if it is raining out).

We enjoyed our stay! Beautiful home, convienent location with park and walking trail across the street. Lovely patio to relax and enjoy the wooded setting. Enjoyed the piano, as we have musicians in our family. Driveway is steep, however, just go for it! Plenty of room to turn around at the top. Would definitely stay here again!

Unique digs in the heart of the city

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our visit back “home” to atlanta. The location is wonderful - you feel as though you are in a relaxing, nature filled hideaway when in reality you are less than 2 miles from many restaurants and coffee shops. The location allowed us to have fun excursions to the zoo and botanical gardens while being able to pop back to the house for a nap for our nine month old. The spacious layout was perfect to have our parents come stay (they live in GA) to get extra quality time with their grandson but provide privacy and space for all of us. Despite being close to so many restaurants we ordered in multiple nights because the eating spaces were so inviting. One night we dined in the dining room with skylights and beautiful views of the backyard garden and the next we sat on the front porch and enjoyed the terraced front yard of azaleas and bird life. The house is right on A park that has a great loop for running and a playground for kids. The house has a great story and unique decor and history which makes it all the more special. Staying here gives you a unique opportunity to experience history and serenity while being very centrally located. We will definitely look to stay here again on a future trip to Atlanta!

We wanted a place to stay in Buckhead and this house was great. Great views in the house, an excellent neighborhood not far from a nice park, and the owner was very helpful.

Best VRBO EVER!!!!

  • 5 of 5

WOW!!!! I really don't even know where to begin. We have rented through VRBO many times, but this was by far my best experience. This 60+ year old home was pure PERFECTION. It was extremely clean, well maintained, and tastefully decorated. BREATHTAKING VIEW! There is zero clutter, which makes for a more relaxing environment. We traveled with 3 out of our 4 children (one of the travelers being a teen), and everyone was more than comfortable. The home is in a private location and so peaceful and serene! I actuallly felt rested when I left. We were able to take the kids out for the day then wore them out at a playground within walking distance before bed. I would go back again tomorrow. And the history of this home...... you will just have to read the framed news clipping in the hallway when you arrive!
