Fully furnished cottage in the woods with backyard opening to pine trees and four acre pond. Cottage has wood floors, window air conditioners and homey furnishings. Perfect for a family retreat or a romantic getaway. Located on our 300 acre working ranch, Pine Grove Cottage is tucked away on its own corner of the property with private drive and gated entrance. A sun room runs the length of the house in the back and looks out on the pine grove and lake beyond. An open family room/dining/kitchen is perfect for family gatherings. Guests are free to roam the ranch property which includes several small lakes (four to seven acres in size) and large expanses of wooded acreage where wildlife and birds abound. Fishing on the lakes is available on a "catch and release" basis to ensure fishing remains good for future guests. Lakes are stocked with bass, catfish and brim.
Canoes and boats are provided for those who want to go out on the lakes to fish or just relax. Visitors can also receive ranch tours including a chance to see prize winning Shorthorn cattle and the owner's herd of miniature horses. Located within 15 minutes of Pittsburg, Gilmer, and Winnsboro, guests can experience life in the country but enjoy the amenities of a town. In the summer, fresh peaches, blackberries and blueberries are sold at nearby orchards. Golfing, a winery and a variety of restaurants are within 15 minutes of the ranch. For those who enjoy antiques, there are many shops within 15-30 minutes of the ranch.
Jim and Paula Archer own and operate Lone Star Cattle Company, a working 250 acre ranch in Northeast Texas. Jim is a recently retired Professor of Chemistry. Paula retired last year after 30+ years as a software sales leader for a major corporation. They moved to the ranch over 13 years ago. Jim continues to be active in Rotary International and recently served as District Governor for Rotary International. He is also Chair of the local ambulance board. Paula raises Shorthorn show calves and breeding stock. She is on the Board of Directors for the Texas Shorthorn Association and will serve as Vice President of that organization for 2013-14. Both enjoy sharing the relaxation and enjoyment of the ranch through the vacation rental program.
Paula Archer purchased this house in 1998
We love the beauty of the area and the wonderful community of small town friends and neighbors. We moved to East Texas more than 20 years ago. After living in 'town' (Pittsburg TX) for 10 years we bought the ranch and fixed up Pine Grove Cottage for our weekend getaway. We loved staying there so much we sold our home in the city and moved to Pine Grove Cottage while we began plans for a new home on another corner of the property. During this time we needed more room for family and friends so we added Spring House on still another corner of the ranch. In 2005 our home was completed and we moved out of Pine Grove Cottage. We decided to offer both Pine Grove and Spring House on VRBO at that time so others could share in the beauty and fun of the ranch. We were so pleased with the wonderful guests that visited, we have added a third VRBO guest apartment and a Bed & Breakfast to allow larger groups to stay. In 2011 Paula's sister and brother-in-law moved to the area and purchased Spring House as their private residence. Our positive experience with vacation rentals led us to replace the property with a brand new one, Lakeside Cottage, which we built and opened for business in 2012. We often host extended families looking for a retreat, wedding parties and multiple families who want to come together to visit. Now we can accommodate all. Our return rate is very high and many of our guests have come to view the ranch as their own special place in the country...without all the hard work!
We just made our 8th visit to Pine Grove cabin at Lone Star. This is a favorite place for our family to spend a few days over Christmas break. There is something for everyone. The kids love spending time with the goats, chickens, and other animals. My teen son and husband love fishing and hiking. They all enjoy the lake in the canoe. I enjoy the peaceful, quiet relaxation in the comfort of the cabin, as well. Evenings are spent making smores by the campfire and playing games with the whole family. The Cabin has everything we need - all the comforts of home. The owners are great - give us space and make us feel at home, yet are available for all our needs when necessary. We look forward to our trip to Pine Grove every year and make wonderful memories there that we will always cherish!
The place was awesome very clean had everything we needed caught several nice bass had a great time
Pine Grove Cottage is a rare find! Quaint and full of character but with all the modern comforts that make life easy. We wanted for nothing during the week we stayed here and got some much needed rest. There were days that we simply lazed in the large sun room, watched the incredible scenery, and thought of nothing except how beautiful it all was!
We thought this property might be "off the beaten path" but it was easy to find. The house was on a main county road, but the traffic was light and it is set back far enough that we felt like we were entering another world when we came up the drive. Once we got to the house, all we could hear was silence that was occasionally broken by the sound of birds, chickens from a nearby coop and a little flock of goats. It is nestled in a grove of huge, mature pine trees overlooking a magical lake, complete with fishing pier and boats. There were hiking trails all throughout the property, and lawn furniture for those who would rather rest than walk! Everything was spotlessly clean and well maintained. The owners are wonderful hosts and have a way of making you feel like old friends. Be sure and make time for the Tour, because you'll get to know Jim and Paula and learn their very interesting story. We loved taking a tour of the Ranch and felt like kids at camp by the time we were done!
The most convenient large city nearby is Longview, and during our stay, we dedicated one day to an excursion into town where we were able to find a health food store, a car wash, and a large selection of restaurants. We noticed a movie theater and a mall, but since the Pine Grove Cottage is equipped with an entertainment system, DVDs and WiFi, we didn't feel the need to seek entertainment elsewhere.
We especially enjoyed being able to bring our much beloved dogs. They are members of our family and no trip is complete without them, so we really appreciate hosts who make our pups as welcome as we are! This property will remain among our favorites and since we have relatives in this area, we look forward to staying here again!
Thanks Jim and Paula. You guys are awesome and The Pine Grove Cottage is a beautiful little getaway!
The cottage is located at a ranch on a shallow Lake with a pier and boats to paddle around and fish from. Paula treated us to buscuits and home made peach preserves We eat fresh eggs from the chickens and cooked outside on the large fire pit while we sipped our wine and listened to the sounds of nature. The cottage was much better than I expected with large kitchen, two nice bathrooms comfy beds and lux linens. The 4yr old granddaughter spent most of her time in the goat and chicken pen. They were perfect intertainment for the little one. Jim took us on a tour of the property and told us the story of how they came to live on the Ranch. This is a very special place and only a 3 hrs drive to get away from the noise and traffic of the Dallas area. Paula and Jim made sure we had a wonderful time.
This house and property were perfect for us. The fishing was great, the trail was nice, and the property was beautiful. Having the boats was a huge plus (and for the fishermen, there ARE fish in this pond-we are always leery of this claim, but it's true - put some heavy line on there, boys). One of my sons is not that into fishing, but he had a great time just milling around outside, hiking around with me, putting puzzles together in the house, and just watching TV. I like to cook, especially on trips like this, because I have the time and don't feel rushed. Everything you need is in this kitchen to make good, hearty meals. Even the bed was comfy! The house was clean, stocked with extras most owners don't think about, and really felt homey - not sterile like some places we've stayed. I love that. Additionally, my sister-in-law and I drove into Pittsburg to make an unexpected trip to the drug store and ended up shopping in the antique stores and what not in downtown which ended up being a nice little detour. If we could own property like this some day, it would be just like you'll find at Pine Grove Cottage. Thank you so much for everything! We will definitely be back.
We found a great place for total relaxation! This is the place to get it away from it all. The house was great and well stocked with everything you need. The best part was the extras in every corner, including the homemade jelly and the farm fresh eggs. The fishing was great! The goats and chickens and guineas were fun (our own little petting zoo!) Jim and Paula were the best hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the ranch, with Jim giving us a history how this little piece of heaven came about. We are already planning a return trip, this time with our two boys and their families. We can't wait to show it to them! Thanks, Jim and Paula for having such a great vision!
