Why Johnsie Beck and Cindy Nicholson chose Virginia

Burke's Garden is my "hometown." When my husband and I moved our family back to Virginia in 2001, we moved into the renovated Parsonage. We made a few changes over the years, but the core of the house remains just as it was built around 1900. In 2014, we moved next door to my parents' home. Now we're very excited to share this beautiful home with guests who, we hope, will enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this one of a kind setting.

Relaxing at the Parsonage in a Pastoral Setting - Burke's Garden, Virginia

  • 5 of 5

With my college roommate and our wives, we arrived in Burke's Garden, VA to spend three week nights at the Parsonage. We soon decided that three nights wasn't going to be long enough. The house was very clean and had all the basic necessities we would need. A fully equipped modern eat-in kitchen, three bedrooms and a sitting room upstairs and two bedrooms down, and two walk-in showers, one up and one down made us very pleased with our accommodations. Looking across the road from the front porch or out the huge kitchen window and the rear patio, we had vistas of pastures with cattle, sheep, and horses, and mountains in the distance. Just down the road live Joe and Elizabeth Schrock and children on their Amish family farm. They provided us with several delicious meals; Joe took us on a two hour wagon ride around much of the valley; and we even got to meet their children and watch the milking of their milk cow. Whether you ride or drive slowly through the valley, you constantly have pastoral views that belong in a calendar. We carefully drove up the mountain to the south to see the Appalachian Trail and go to the overlook to view almost the entire valley. There is a grocery store and restaurants about 25 minutes away in Tazewell, and the local Burke's Garden general store will soon reopen with food, bulk food, and even bakery items and sandwich's.

If you enjoy scenery, gorgeous farms, good books, walking or hiking, a bit of TV watching and wonderful friendly owners (Cindy Nicholson next door) and neighbors, then the Parsonage and Burke's Garden is perfect for you. When you listen carefully, you only hear the farm animals in the distance and rushing water when you're near a stream. There's no better place to renew and restore your spirit than the Parsonage in Burke's Garden, Virginia.

Signed,

A Grumpy Old Man (until I stayed at the Parsonage!)

5 Star Accommodations in "God's Thumbprint"

  • 5 of 5

Burkes' Garden is an amazing hidden piece of America. If your goal is to set out and see one of the most beautiful valleys you've ever laid eyes on, this is the place. And the Parsonage is the only way to do it. (Full disclosure, we were taking my mother on a trip and this just happened to be the first house she and my father lived in back in 1958). It has been restored by Cindy and Johnsie with amazing dignity and charm. All the furniture has been beautifully selected and placed to perfection. The house entire house and kitchen are furnished beyond the needs of any guests. We hope to return again soon to enjoy a different season of the year.

We stayed July 2-4, 2017 our daughter got married in Burkes Garden. The bridal party got ready in the house and we took lots of pictures in and around the beautiful landscape of the house. As well as friends stopping by and enjoying the back porch. It was like home away from home but much more peaceful and prettier. Can't wait to stay again. You got to see it to believe it BEAUTIFUL!!
