About John Grubb
Our family has always enjoyed being near the water. After we purchased the house there was not a lot of discussion about where we were going to go or what we were going to do. We got the kids and headed to the lake. We thought at first that we would host lots of parties but as time went by it became a sanctuary for our family to gather and relax. The kids went off to school and Kyna and I found out we used it even more. The kids are married now and when they are in town we still gather at the lake house. Kyna and I are traveling more and thought we would share our place with you.
John Grubb purchased this House in 2002
Why John Grubb chose Lake Norman of Catawba
Kyna and I both grew up near Lake Norman and spent a lot of summers on the lake. Myself for sailing and Kyna for waterskiing. We knew we wanted deep water year round and a great view of the lake. We looked at a lot of houses but never could find the perfect place. When we saw this property our search was over. We have a large lot with plenty of shade and great outdoor gathering spaces. The view from the rockers on the porch for us is magical. We can sit and watch the heron that visits each morning or the ducks and geese that come by in the afternoon. Picnic on the dock are fun as we share our food with the fishes. Inside, there are great rooms for gathering and there is always a pool game going on in the lower level. Each bedroom has a queen bed and its own bathroom. The kids have always slept in the loft which has an awesome view of the house and the lake.
What makes this House unique
One of the best places to be is on the back deck watching the sun set or the kids play. You can see when the boat comes in or who is going off the dock. The kitchen has two doors that open onto the deck for easy access to the grill. The great room also opens to the deck and offers a wonderful view of the lake and the dock. We did not realize until three years ago when we built a new dock how much time we spent on the water. Kyna prefers to sun on the upper level while being Irish my skin and I prefer the shaded gazebo below.
Great location on the lake with a perfect dock!
We enjoyed the house and loved the dock! The dock provided lots of room for multiple activities - swimming, paddle boarding, relaxing, and docking our boat. The house was comfortable with a retro feel. Mattresses and furniture were very comfortable. The owner was incredibly accommodating. A hurricane came thru during the original weekend we booked, and the owner allowed us to change our booking to another weekend.
Good House-Great Dock
The house was good overall, but a few things I would note for the next travelers: the cleaning company I'm sure only does the bare minimum, we swept up a lot of dirt and wiped down all the bathrooms when we arrived. The house needs a good deep cleaning and power washing. The outside deck had cobwebs all around, and I know spiders form webs fast, but some of the dirt/dust had been there for a while. John recommended leaving outside lights off at night to prevent bugs from getting in, and I read a prior review about a few bugs, but the bottom floor had more bugs than I could handle. So much so, that I moved my 1 year old and his pack n play up to the main floor to sleep. Centipedes, millipedes, "thousand legs", whatever you prefer to call them, just too many of them around there. Like a previous reviewer stated, no TV in the pool room downstairs, which stinks on football weekends! Dock was great, far away from the neighbors, my nephews enjoyed swimming and the upstairs deck was great for lounging and watching sunsets. Kitchen is equipped with everything you need, just bring food! I couldn't really let my son walk around too much as there were too many things to grab, climb or plugs to pull off the wall, so maybe not super small child friendly. Lastly, we could only get the living room ceiling fans to work for one day. We also couldn't get the fans on the porch to cut on either! Spoke to John once prior to arriving and he was very nice!
We were aware that this home was older and furniture dated however, we were disappointed in the lack of cleanliness and presence of bugs and cobwebs in all rooms. Millipedes in particular are a huge issue in the lower level bathroom and bedroom. We contacted the owner and told him that he should seek a refund from his cleaning company and told him that we checked out two days early. We also sent him numerous photos of the condition of the home, including dead bugs in the coffee pot and on the kitchen counter. The owner called us and acted shocked that we were unhappy even after seeing the photos. We explained we were not interested in leaving him a negative review and affecting future rentals but thought he should know how unfair it was to rent a dirty home. He said that was a threat! He told us that he would visit the home and contact us after and we never heard from him again. Our first poor experience with a home rental. Only positive is a nice dock with pretty lake views but that was about it.
Great location on Lake Norman
Great location on Lake Norman, spent a wonderful week with family on the lake, plan to return.
Dock was amazing and the owners were super helpful!
We spent most of our time on the 2 story dock which was so much fun! We were able to dock our boat, fish, swim, and cook out!
We encountered a couple bumps in the beginning of our stay but the owners were wonderful and took care of everything we needed. We had everything we needed without having to leave the property - it was great!
We did encounter spiders/and bugs inside and outside but we expected some of that with a lakefront property.
Overall a wonderful weekend on the lake!!
Great location right on Lake Norman
This is a perfect location right on Lake Norman. As many other reviews mentioned, it is older and that is reflected in the price. A few things not mentioned in other reviews: beds are very comfortable and the house is very quiet and the views of the lake are spectacular; downstairs bathroom is the only bathroom that has electric outlets; downstairs bedroom does not have electric outlets. These are minor inconveniences and again are reflected in the lower price. Owner is very responsive and very friendly. I would definitely rent again. Overall a beautiful property. Can’t beat the dock and the lake views!
