Newly Renovated Seaside House, Breathtaking Reef View, Cool Breeze

Bedrooms 2
Space 720 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Spacious seaside, 2-bedroom, modern bath, fully equipped kitchen

Situated on a large double lot on the eastern side of Caye Caulker on the quiet end of the village, Capt. Bulley’s Retreat is a classic Belizean wood framed home which underwent major renovations during the winter/spring of 2016 and is now available for weekly vacation or longer term rental. Fully furnished, this turnkey property is located on Asuncion Beach about a five-minute walk from the water taxi and 40 steps away from the water’s edge. You can get to the island either by taking a puddle jumper plane from the international airport or from the city harbor by one of the 2 water taxi services. The house is fully updated, amenities include an open concept living space with a modern kitchen equipped with all new appliances, a large bathroom with new fixtures and tub/shower, Wi-Fi and television. Rounding out the indoor space are two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and the other with twin beds. Both have plenty of drawer storage, the master a large closet. Step through the sliding glass door onto a huge covered deck and take in the ocean view with the waves breaking on the barrier reef just a half mile offshore. Enjoy the cool breezes driven by the easterly tradewinds. Listen to the rustling of the coconut palms and other local vegetation which surround the house. The rear of the property opens onto Front Street, one of three streets (appropriately named Front, Middle and Back) running north/south through the village and within easy walking distance from grocery stores and restaurants. Two bicycles and a charcoal grill are also available for use should you wish to go for a ride or cook up some of the local catch-of-the-day. Also located on the rear of the property are two small cabanas occasionally used by family members who will never impinge on your privacy.

About Dana

I am a Belizean who grew up visiting the caye and staying in this house, long before there were restaurants, little cafes and bars. I always loved the caye, especially swimming at the Split, long before the Lazy Lizard bar appeared and when the caye was primarily home to fishermen and their families. The island has changed tremendously over the last twenty plus years, while still retaining the charm of a small, quaint and quiet place to visit and relax. I hope you have an opportunity to experience this magical place.

Dana purchased this house in 1953

Why Dana chose Belize

This property has been in my family since the mid-1950's and the original house was built shortly thereafter. Amazingly, this house has withstood at least four hurricanes and many tropical storms. Take a peek at the picture of the original house hanging on the wall near the patio doors. My grand uncle is sitting on the original porch. Many extended family still live in Belize and Cousin Tony will be available to offer you assistance when needed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house is amazing. It surely met our expectations. This is the perfect place for a getaway. The ambiance of the inside reminds us of our home. Waking up to the beautiful sea breeze and the sound of the waves washing up onshore is truly amazing. Mr. and Mrs. Longsworth (property managers) are friendly and have a warm heart. They are welcoming and made us feel like a part of their family. The bathroom is beautiful and the kitchen has everything to make meals. The experience was amazing and we are surely looking forward to spending more time here.

We love this house!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had an amazing stay at Captain Bully's retreat. We spent lazy days on the back porch and cooked delicious meals in the fully stocked kitchen. This was our first trip abroad with the children and it's one I'll never forget. What an honor it was to stay in such a clean, well organized and beautiful house.

Caye Caulker at it's finest!

  • 5 of 5

Let me start by saying this - Caye Caulker is not for everyone. If you've done your homework and are more of a 'Resort Person' respect to that but Caulker might not be your place. If you embrace everything Caye Caulker embodies, however, this absolutely is your rental property! The location is perfect - far enough away from 'town' to be quiet yet close enough to walk to everything. The house is on stilts right next to the water - from the bedrooms you can peer through the floorboards and see the sand below... perfect flow for CC! Has everything you might want except laundry and A/C. No worries - laundry services at Rosie's is 1 1/2 blocks away and they will wash, dry, and fold for a reasonable price. As for A/C... we are from the northeast U.S. and are cold living creatures. No worries - a cool offshore breeze kept things comfy our entire stay. If the house had an A/C unit we wouldn't have opted to turn it in once. Dana is friendly and easy to work with and her property managers were equally accommodating. Don't book when I'm planning to visit next but aside from that do yourself a favor and book this amazing, old school, Caye Caulker retreat!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words Andy. Everyone who works to support the property does their best to make guests comfortable. For those who want to experience the breeze you mentioned, there are not easily found links on the website described as dawn and dusk breeze at Caye Caulker that allows viewers to experience a typical strong breeze at the house. As for the floor board views, they may or may not be there for others to experience as we regularly perform maintenance. Best, Dana

The Best Porch on the Island

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time in Caye Caulker. We spent most of our time on the porch or in front of the house :)

I would recommend this spot 100 times over.

Thank you!!

Owner's Response: Josey, I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay at the house and that you experienced my favorite spot, the porch! It is a great place to sip your morning beverage and watch the sun rise, or to end the evening and enjoy the cool breeze. It is also the perfect place to sit and read or to take a quiet afternoon nap! Please come back and see us again soon. Best, Dana

Amazing view and sea breezes!

  • 4 of 5

This place is literally right on the shore, just steps from the sandwalk that goes all around the Caye! When we weren't out exploring, you could find us sitting on the deck, just soaking up the view and the breezes. The deck furniture was very comfortable: we loved having our meals at the table out there and reading in the chairs or resting in the hammock. Dana was easy to communicate with, and addressed any questions we had. Thank you for a great week!

Excellent house in an ideal location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Caye Caulker and we LOVED this house! It really is one of the places to stay on the whole island. From the layout, to the amenities, to the location, it was everything we wanted for our vacation. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone I know going to Caye Caulker! One minor complaint... we did a lot of cooking and found the knives to be very dull.

Owner's Response: Hi Amanda, I am so pleased that you and your family enjoyed staying at the house. Thank you for your kind words. You can be sure we now have sharp knives at the house for our guests to use! Thank you for bringing that omission to my attention. Dana

best place on the island. (I selfishly want to keep it a secret)

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2 weeks in this wonderful place. I don't want to say that I looked around and would say it is the best on the island because I want to be able to rent it again next year and don't want it to be completely booked, but it is! We found nothing lacking!!! From the wonderful beds, to the wonderful view, there is nothing but wonderful things I can say!

I love the safe, laid back atmosphere of this island, and the location at this end of the island is perfect for those not looking for the party scene

If you want to stay somewhere that feels like home and has all the amenities that you want, this is the place.
