Situated on a large double lot on the eastern side of Caye Caulker on the quiet end of the village, Capt. Bulley’s Retreat is a classic Belizean wood framed home which underwent major renovations during the spring of 2016 and is now available for weekly vacation or longer term rental. Fully furnished, this turnkey property is located on Asuncion Beach about a five-minute walk from the water taxi and 40 steps away from the water’s edge. You can get to the island either by taking a puddle jumper plane from the international airport or from the city harbor by one of the 2 water taxi services. The house is fully updated, amenities include an open concept living space with a modern kitchen equipped with all new appliances, a large bathroom with new fixtures and tub/shower, a washer/dryer, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and television. Rounding out the indoor space are two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and the other with twin beds. Both have plenty of drawer storage, the master a large closet. Step through the sliding glass door onto a huge covered deck and take in the ocean view with the waves breaking on the barrier reef just a half mile offshore. Enjoy the cool breezes driven by the easterly tradewinds. Listen to the rustling of the coconut palms and other local vegetation which surround the house. The rear of the property opens onto Avenida Hicaco, one of three main streets running north/south through the village and within easy walking distance to grocery stores and restaurants. Two bicycles and a charcoal grill and four lounge chairs are also available for use should you wish to go for a ride or cook up some of the local catch-of-the-day. Also located at the rear of the property are two cabanas, one of which is rented to a local, and the other is ocassionally used by family members, none of whom who will impinge on your privacy.

I am a Belizean who grew up visiting the caye and staying in this house, long before there were restaurants, little cafes and bars. I always loved the caye, especially swimming at the Split, long before the Lazy Lizard bar appeared and when the caye was primarily home to fishermen and their families. The island has changed tremendously over the last twenty plus years, while still retaining the charm of a small, quaint and quiet place to visit and relax. I hope you have an opportunity to experience this magical place.
Dana purchased this House in 1953
Why Dana chose Belize District
This property has been in my family since the mid-1950's and the original house was built shortly thereafter. Amazingly, this house has withstood at least four hurricanes and many tropical storms. Take a peek at the picture of the original house hanging on the wall near the patio doors. My grand uncle is sitting on the original porch. Many extended family still live in Belize and Cousin Tony will be available to offer you assistance when needed.

A real gem.
We really enjoyed our stay. The location is nice and quiet. But a short walk to anywhere on the island it seems. And the porch is a perfect place to spend a relaxing morning or afternoon or evening.
I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. The deck is one of my favorite places to sit, relax, read or just watch the waves roll in. Please come see us again some time. Best, Dana and Tony
Loved the cute house and great location but no beach! Snorkeling, fishing and fun restaurants are all walking distance. Clean and well equipped.
Hi Kathee, I think you would agree the pictures accurately depict the waterfront. We have a small beach area in front of the house and guests have launched their kayaks from there or swim in front of the house or from a nearby dock. Many guests choose to swim off the sea wall at the split as well. The caye offers a few options for swimming, as well as going out on one of the boat tours and swimming near the reef. Best, Dana
Exceeded our expectations!!
I believe I saw this in a previous review that I agree with : I hate to share what a great place Captain Bulleys is. We felt so at home here. The location was perfect and the amenities were excellent. Comfy beds, kitchen well stocked and best of all was the deck. Waves, sun, wind, sand and best of all the hammock. The house is clean and very comfortable. Thanks for everything. We will definitely be coming back!!
I am so please that you and your family enjoyed staying at the house. Thank you for your kind words. We try to make the house feel comfortable and have equipped it with what guests will need if they choose to cook a little or a lot. Please come and stay again soon.
Thanks again, Dana
Cooled by a steady seabreeze
Capt Bully is a lovely house on stilts on the beach, cooled by constant breezes and staring straight at every exquisite sunrise. Well equipped. Quiet. Ideal location for stores, restaurants, beaches, all just minutes away. We're missing it already.
I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I agree that once you have experienced a sunrise/sunset on the deck, it is difficult to leave behind. We enjoyed having you and your friends as guests. Please come visit us again. Dana
This is a very clean comfortable house! Beautiful location, quiet and relaxing. We enjoyed our stay.
I am pleased you and your family enjoyed your stay at the house. I hope you will visit with us again some time. Best, Dana
Perfect for our family!
My family of four rented Captain Bulley's Retreat this past week and it was perfect! The house was small, but the outdoor area is where we spent the majority of our time. My daughter really enjoyed napping in the hammock while my other daughter got comfy in one of the cushioned chairs. We brought our own paddle board and snorkel gear with us, so being right on the water was awesome! We spent many hours in the water just beyond the property and saw an abundance of marine life each time, from huge starfish to puffer fish and stringrays. The neighbors next door kept yelling shark when my husband and I were out one afternoon. We thought they were teasing us, but when we got back they had a video of a hammerhead that swam out just behind us!
Inside the house we found it to be well stocked with most everything you would need if you were to be cooking meals. We ate out every meal because, quite frankly, I'm on vacation and didn't want to do too much. We did brew our own coffee everyday and my husband and I would rise early to have coffee while watching the sun rise! A spectacular site from this place!! I also liked that the house was supplied with extra trash bags, toilet paper, and drinking water. It may seem like a small thing to some, but when traveling far and not wanting to buy extras and then figure out what to do with leftovers, it is nice to not have to worry about this.
Overall, we loved the house! It's close enough to the restaurants and bars, but far enough away to not have all the noise. Thanks Dana and Tony for everything!
I am so pleased that you and your family enjoyed your stay. It sounds as if you had quite an adventure as well, I have never heard of a shark so close to the shore, yikes! Tony especially wants to thank you for leaving the house so tidy, it is a not so little thing during this busy time of the year and was most appreciated! Please do come back and see us soon. Best, Tony and Dana
