Newly Renovated Seaside House, Breathtaking Reef View, Cool Breeze

Bedrooms 2
Space 720 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Spacious seaside, 2-bedroom, modern bath, fully equipped kitchen

Situated on a large double lot on the eastern side of Caye Caulker on the quiet end of the village, Capt. Bulley’s Retreat is a classic Belizean wood framed home which underwent major renovations during the winter/spring of 2016 and is now available for weekly vacation or longer term rental. Fully furnished, this turnkey property is located on Asuncion Beach about a five-minute walk from the water taxi and 40 steps away from the water’s edge. You can get to the island either by taking a puddle jumper plane from the international airport or from the city harbor by one of the 2 water taxi services. The house is fully updated, amenities include an open concept living space with a modern kitchen equipped with all new appliances, a large bathroom with new fixtures and tub/shower, Wi-Fi and television. Rounding out the indoor space are two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and the other with twin beds. Both have plenty of drawer storage, the master a large closet. Step through the sliding glass door onto a huge covered deck and take in the ocean view with the waves breaking on the barrier reef just a half mile offshore. Enjoy the cool breezes driven by the easterly tradewinds. Listen to the rustling of the coconut palms and other local vegetation which surround the house. The rear of the property opens onto Front Street, one of three streets (appropriately named Front, Middle and Back) running north/south through the village and within easy walking distance from grocery stores and restaurants. Two bicycles and a charcoal grill are also available for use should you wish to go for a ride or cook up some of the local catch-of-the-day. Also located on the rear of the property are two small cabanas occasionally used by family members who will never impinge on your privacy.

About Dana

I am a Belizean who grew up visiting the caye and staying in this house, long before there were restaurants, little cafes and bars. I always loved the caye, especially swimming at the Split, long before the Lazy Lizard bar appeared and when the caye was primarily home to fishermen and their families. The island has changed tremendously over the last twenty plus years, while still retaining the charm of a small, quaint and quiet place to visit and relax. I hope you have an opportunity to experience this magical place.

Dana purchased this house in 1953

Why Dana chose Belize District

This property has been in my family since the mid-1950's and the original house was built shortly thereafter. Amazingly, this house has withstood at least four hurricanes and many tropical storms. Take a peek at the picture of the original house hanging on the wall near the patio doors. My grand uncle is sitting on the original porch. Many extended family still live in Belize and Cousin Tony will be available to offer you assistance when needed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house is amazing. It surely met our expectations. This is the perfect place for a getaway. The ambiance of the inside reminds us of our home. Waking up to the beautiful sea breeze and the sound of the waves washing up onshore is truly amazing. Mr. and Mrs. Longsworth (property managers) are friendly and have a warm heart. They are welcoming and made us feel like a part of their family. The bathroom is beautiful and the kitchen has everything to make meals. The experience was amazing and we are surely looking forward to spending more time here.

A real gem.

We really enjoyed our stay. The location is nice and quiet. But a short walk to anywhere on the island it seems. And the porch is a perfect place to spend a relaxing morning or afternoon or evening.

Cooled by a steady seabreeze

Capt Bully is a lovely house on stilts on the beach, cooled by constant breezes and staring straight at every exquisite sunrise. Well equipped. Quiet. Ideal location for stores, restaurants, beaches, all just minutes away. We're missing it already.

Perfect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four rented Captain Bulley's Retreat this past week and it was perfect! The house was small, but the outdoor area is where we spent the majority of our time. My daughter really enjoyed napping in the hammock while my other daughter got comfy in one of the cushioned chairs. We brought our own paddle board and snorkel gear with us, so being right on the water was awesome! We spent many hours in the water just beyond the property and saw an abundance of marine life each time, from huge starfish to puffer fish and stringrays. The neighbors next door kept yelling shark when my husband and I were out one afternoon. We thought they were teasing us, but when we got back they had a video of a hammerhead that swam out just behind us!

Inside the house we found it to be well stocked with most everything you would need if you were to be cooking meals. We ate out every meal because, quite frankly, I'm on vacation and didn't want to do too much. We did brew our own coffee everyday and my husband and I would rise early to have coffee while watching the sun rise! A spectacular site from this place!! I also liked that the house was supplied with extra trash bags, toilet paper, and drinking water. It may seem like a small thing to some, but when traveling far and not wanting to buy extras and then figure out what to do with leftovers, it is nice to not have to worry about this.

Overall, we loved the house! It's close enough to the restaurants and bars, but far enough away to not have all the noise. Thanks Dana and Tony for everything!

Owner's Response: Hi Rachel, I am so pleased that you and your family enjoyed your stay. It sounds as if you had quite an adventure as well, I have never heard of a shark so close to the shore, yikes! Tony especially wants to thank you for leaving the house so tidy, it is a not so little thing during this busy time of the year and was most appreciated! Please do come back and see us soon. Best, Tony and Dana

Excellent property on Caye Caulker - right place, right pace.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here. The property is located perfectly on the island to allow you to walk to downtown but not be in the middle of the noise. The best feature here is the elevated deck/porch with it's sweeping view of the ocean and the reef. I loved waking up to the sunrise, watching the wildlife and the local fisherman leave and come back form the adjacent docks. We rented bikes from the property owner and they were reasonable and in good condition. The house is stocked with everything you need to cook your own meals. The bed was comfortable and newer. The master bedroom is right on the ocean side, gets great nightly breezes and has 4 windows with screens for ventilation along with a ceiling fan. We never felt that we needed air conditioning. Regrettably, there is wifi and a TV... if you need these two things on Caye Caulker you are here for all of the wrong reasons! I felt like time went half speed as I lived the way you are supposed to on Caye Caulker - go slow! I want to come back to this place sometime very soon!

Also - When you are here try some of the street vendors for food and ask some of those local fisherman to sell you their catch.
