I can not say enough great things about my stay on Quadra Island, beginning with the Cottage at Loon Point. The photos do not do the location justice as the view from the deck is exquisite. The water is crystal clear and full of activity, from a resident seal population of around 16, three bald eagles living on the little island directly across from the cottage, to purple and orange starfish, tiny jelly fish, a family of otters, gulls, etc. From the deck you also have a beautiful view of Vancouver Island; I simply never tired of the view. The cottage is perfectly simple and so comfortable and cozy. I felt right at home the moment I drove up, a short two minute drive from the ferry. The kitchen is well stocked and is easy and fun to cook in. I ate inside and I ate outside - I never could decide which was my favorite. :)
The bed was comfortable and the bathroom small and just fine. The washer and dryer were nice additions.
As to activities, oh! The list is endless! I went for a couple of runs on Rebecca Spit and then for my long run I walked to the ferry and rode across to Campbell River (10 minute ride) where there is a paved, fairly flat 6 mile walking/biking path. I went swimming in Morte Lake which is crystal clear and fabulous and I also went ocean swimming on the east side of the island by Rebecca Spit. If you are a swimmer, Nelson Lake is reported to be the clearest lake on the island. (I did both swims in a wetsuit as the water temp was around 60 degrees - too cold for this Texan!) Fishing, kayaking, some small shops, a museum or two all make for a unique, beautiful experience on Quadra Island.
If you wanted more dining and shopping options you can walk to the ferry (about a 10 minute walk) and go across to Campbell River (cost around $8US round trip) and there are lots of options within walking distance. You could drive your car on if you wanted but walking guarantees no wait for the ferry!
I highly recommend Loon Point. I loved the house and Kristene and Fred and Kate were so hospitable. They made my stay extra special and I feel that I made three friends. I hope I get to go back next year. Quadra is a place that carves a niche in your heart and calls your name - it really is that special.
