This unique 1920’s estate is set in the hills of Havelock North, less than five kilometres from the village. Beaches and world-class wineries are only a stone’s throw away making this residence an ideal location for your sojourn. With some of the best views in the area towards Napier Hill, Gisborne and Te Mata Peak, this private and tranquil property is a retreat from the outside world.
This character home boasts several indoor and outdoor entertaining areas. Whether you fancy lazing by the pool, having a sundowner at the pétanque court, picking fresh citrus straight from the orchard or simply reading a book under one of the many established trees on the grounds as the pheasant’s roam past, there is something for everyone. In the evening, make use of the outdoor courtyard, light a fire and enjoy a barbecue, then hop into the hot tub and gaze at the stars. Later in the evening try your luck on the oval pool table, which is challenging for even the most skilled pool shark.
There are five bedrooms in this historical family home, four queen rooms (one with walk in wardrobe and ensuite) and one bedroom with a king single. Bathrooms consist of one ensuite, one family bathroom with claw foot bath and separate shower and a toilet in the garage. The fully equipped kitchen is spacious and has a farmhouse feel. The breakfast bar is the perfect place to sip on a coffee before wandering through to dine on the large balcony at the front of the house, where you look out over the expansive gardens and Hawke’s Bay.
We do also host small weddings/events, inquire for more information and pricing.
Around the back of the property lies a pond and hand-crafted wooden cottage (with flushing toilet), which is surrounded by native bush. This area can be hired separately for picnics and bbq's.

The first view of Kōtare Estate, framed by the Cypress pillars, fills you with joy and anticipation. Throughout our stay our joy grew and our expectations were exceeded. The home is gracious and authentic in the best of ways. It has been so lovingly cared for, its history and experiences, so honestly honoured. The home draws you in; the views draw you outward. We spent as many hours as possible enjoying the property and relaxing. Our hosts, Pip and Mathias, were so gracious and accommodating. We valued their willingness to share the home’s secrets with us and their commitment to ensuring we had the privacy and the amenities needed for a relaxing break. High on our priority list are also a great night’s sleep and a good shower – tick and tick!
There is a wonderfully romantic sense to Kōtare Estate, a sense of bygone days, of celebrations, laughter, endless summers and soirées. It was wonderful to spend a few days here, to relax, to enjoy the stunning views and surroundings, and celebrate. Thank you Pip and Mathias for a most memorable of stays. We look forward to our next visit.
The house and location were amazing! 1920s mansion, situated in a private rural setting overlooking the region. The hosts were really accomodating with extra beds etc, and so easy to deal with!
This place is huge, it is historic and beautiful with exceptional views. We felt, it was the best place in the region and everything you need is there, even a dress up closet!
Thanks again Pip, we will see you again one day!
When we arrived at the property we were pleasantly surprised by the size of the house and the land that it was set on, after a quick tour of the house by the owner we were left to enjoy everything that it had to offer. The gardens and pool area were really nice to enjoy and the owners left us a few games to enjoy. Our favourite was Pétanque in the afternoon in the bbq area! The house and room layout was great, however it would of been nice to have another bathroom for such a big house, however we made it work. The kitchen and courtyard area were perfect with every cupboard stacked with whiteware and appliances to use! We would highly recommend this house to families and large groups. All the best for the future.
This large elegant home made our stay in Hawkes Bay all the more special. With 4 or 5 indoor living areas and a huge garden, our large family could always find a quiet place to read, or something to do. Thanks Mathias and Pip for catering to our needs.
