Overview

About the property

6-BR Vintage Lodge w/ Lrg. Prvt. Dock, Boatlift, Beach, Firepit & Sauna on 20 ac

In existence since 1935, Westhaven Lodge has a private setting with a premier location on the south side of Big Bay of Lake Vermilion. Recently remodeled, the 3,200 sq. ft. single-story lodge has its own large dock with an available boat lift, its own fire pit and wood-burning sauna, and a large beach that it shares with a two-bedroom seasonal cabin (Cabin 1 at Westhaven Lodge, which is also available for rent if you need more than six bedrooms for your group).

The lodge can easily handle a large crowd as it has beds for up to 18 people. The large master bedroom faces the lake and has a queen bed, two more bedrooms with lake views also contain queen beds, a fourth bedroom has a full bed, and two bunk rooms contain six beds (i.e. three bunk beds) and four beds (i.e. two bunk beds), respectively. The lodge also has a large great room, a four-season porch, a large kitchen and a dining room with room for 12 at the table.

If your party is even larger, Cabin 1 at Westhaven Lodge, which is next door and has its own lake frontage with a separate dock and boat lift, can easily handle five more guests. It has one bedroom containing a queen bed and a second that holds another bunk bed and a separate twin bed. Both lodging facilities are completely finished with pine interiors that have granite fireplaces dating back to the 1930s. Please see VRBO Listing #682304 for more information on Cabin 1---note that a 10% discount up to $100 for the week is available on this cabin if it's rented with the lodge. Also note that while the lodge is great for use all year 'round, Cabin 1 is, unfortunately, only available May through October.

No additional fees for either cabin other than sales tax are applied; however, a damage deposit is required. Questions? Please contact Rodger.

A canoe and small paddle boat are also included with the lodge. Pets are allowed in either cabin, and both structures have decks facing the lake. Because the sun rises and sets so far to the north in the summer, Westhaven Lodge is ideal for watching both as it faces due north with more than 180-degree view of Big Bay.

The boat lifts can accommodate a boat up to 20 feet or so with a maximum beam/width of up to 8'-0", the nearest free boat landing is only 1.5 miles away, and a large parking lot and trailer storage area also serve both structures.

About Rodger Skare

The Skare family bought Westhaven Lodge, all of its cabins, and an additional 20 acres of heavily-wooded upland back in 1978 and operated the entire property as a resort for 20 years. Most of the original cabins making up the resort still exist, but the six furthest to the west were sold off to two great families who are now great neighbors. The next generation of the Skare Family continues to rent out Cabin 1, which was (and still is) the best of the original cabins.

Rodger Skare purchased this cabin in 1978

Why Rodger Skare chose Tower

Excellent family retreat with a private setting and unbelievable amenities; all in a resort area with a wealth of things to do---rain or shine.

What makes this cabin unique

Unique, historic fishing lodge containing six bedrooms, built in 1930 and recently remodeled with a large dock, your own boat lift, a beach, a lakeside fire pit, and a wood-burning sauna.

Notes:
Lake Vermilion contains over 40,000 acres and holds 365 islands--many of which are uninhabited. The entire north shore borders the southwest corner of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, so many trails, bluff hikes and day-use picnic sites abound. And speaking of wilderness, The Wilderness Golf Course, one of the top-ranked public courses in Minnesota, is just four miles away (two miles by boat!). It's part of the Fortune Bay Casino complex located on Everett Bay of Lake Vermilion. Rainy day? No problem. The Tower-Soudan underground mine is open for tours all season. And have we mentioned that Lake Vermilion is one of the top Walleye fishing lakes in Minnesota. It's also well-stocked with Muskies and hosts several tournaments each year.

Beautiful view, great house a large group.

  • 5 of 5

The house was great, roomy and cozy. Was the perfect setting for our large family to gather and enjoy the lake. The kitchen had everything we needed, the house is well appointed and larger than we expected. Outside there was plenty of things to do to keep everyone amused, from the 5yo to the 92yo. Will visit again!

Great week in Historic Lodge on Lake Vermilion!

  • 4 of 5

This property is very special- 6 bedrooms/3 baths/large gathering spaces combined with a ton of outdoor space and frontage on Lake Vermilion. Loved the giant deck/unobstructed views/boat lifts (we rented the Lodge and Cabin 1 so we had two lifts)/ two refrigerators in Lodge. For a large group this is perfect! The Lodge and Cabin 1 are older so that needs to be appreciated when staying here. We are finicky sleepers so we needed to bring with memory foam mattress toppers to be comfortable on the existing mattresses so I would recommend that for future guests. The proximity to the restaurants at the Vermilion Club and Fortune Bay Casino was excellent! Rodger- the owner- was very accommodating on an important request so we really appreciated that. The caretakers and maintenance crew were so friendly and enjoyable. We have great memories of our week here and hope to return next year.

Owner's Response: Thanks Heidi, I'm glad you enjoyed it (even without hot water for a day!). Sorry for the inconvenience, but just like at home, things occasionally need to be replaced. I'm very happy with my crew; they deserve all the credit. They worked fast to get a new water heater in place, and they do many other good things around the place to keep it going!

A great place to stay with a large family.

  • 4 of 5

Very lovely historic large cabin, on a beautiful large lot making it very private. The log cabin is in good shape for its age and the yard is also well taken care of. The furniture needs to be updated, especially the living room couches and dining room chairs. The kitchen had plenty of counter space and well appointed except for a few small items. (Bring a vegetable peeler and a non stick frying pan if you don't like cast iron.) Wonderful large dock with a swim ladder at the end so you don't have to walk on the rocky bottom to get out of the lake.

Owner's Response: Thanks for nice review, Carol. We have 17 (and counting) in our family, and the Lodge sure suits us well! Our goal over the winter is to start replacing the furniture you mention, and maybe even get a larger main dining table that can seat more than twelve at one time. Our cleaning staff said you left the place in great shape--thank you! We hope you come back soon... Rodger

Enjoyed our stay there!

  • 5 of 5

We thought that the property was wonderful. The large dock made boat accessibility perfect for pontoons. There was a small beach which the grandchildren enjoyed. We took a canoe trip to the closest island, using the canoe for the cabin as well as one we had brought. The only small problem we had was with the wifi, which we were able to solve, using our ingenuity, and communications, with Frontier the wifi provider. Rodger Skare, the owner was very helpful in working to resolve this problem. Thank you Mr. Skare, we appreciate your input.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review! Yes, we've had lots of internet problems with Frontier Communications--as many others in the area have--but we have worked through the issues and have brand new equipment. If for some reason you can't connect to our WiFi service, try clicking on the "acknowledge tab" that is on the web page that pops up on your screen when you're trying to connect to the internet, wait 30 seconds, and then see if that works. We are also resetting our logins and passwords this week on the new equipment, so we should be good to go!

Hidden gem for a beautiful vacation

  • 5 of 5

Really loved our time at Westhaven lodge. The home is a former resort with it's own small beach, dock and boat lift as well as a canoe and some other water gear. The first morning we woke early to go fishing and the sun was just rising. The view of the sun rising over the lake from the master bedroom was unbelievable! The whole week we thoroughly enjoyed our time- boating fishing, having family time around the campfire by the dock. The piano provided my daughter the chance to play some wonderful music in the books, and the kids entertained themselves with the many board games available. The kids watched a couple movies from the collection provided. A few minor issues were dealt with promptly by the cleaning staff. Basic kitchen utensils were available and plenty of table settings for a large group, the only things we missed were an electric mixer, lids to the larger pots, spices and tupperware containers. We ate all our meals there except one evening when we went out. We hope to return to this location again soon as it was one of our all time top annual family reunion vacations!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Sarah! Our family and our staff are glad you and your family enjoyed everything so much. The place really is a gem, and we're happy to share it. We'll continue to work on taking care of the minor issues, so please let me know if there's anything else we need to address. We hope you come back and stay with us again soon! - Rodger Skare
