About this property
The North End Of Our Restored Barn
Our beautifully restored 160 year-old barn is centrally located on Mt. Desert Island, approximately 15 minutes from the village of Bar Harbor and approximately 10 minutes from the entrance to Acadia National Park via an old farm road, aptly named 'The Crooked Road'.
The space Our 160 year-old barn once served as the livery stable for Town Hill, a one-time farming community which is in the township of Bar Harbor. We've converted the stable into two beautifully appointed apartments -- there's no other place quite like this on Mt. Desert. Soaring ceilings, hand hewn beams, cozy bedrooms, new kitchen and baths, loft space for tv and reading with a comfortable daybed for an additional sleeping option, and a wonderful screened porch for morning coffee, afternoon reading, evening conversations, and a quiet meal any time of day. We call this half of the barn 'The North Barn'. New kitchen, baths, flooring, heating, air, insulation and all the amenities create the perfectly livable blending of old and new. The North Barn is a special place --cozy, comfortable, elegant and is one of the nicest home-away-from home environments on MDI.
Guest access Our guests are welcomed to borrow our bikes, helmets, water bottles and bike rack for wonderful rides on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park. free to wash a load of clothes in our laundry room. We'll make sure you have maps and guidebooks for use while you're visiting, and steer you towards our favorite hikes, bike rides, swimming spots, tours and restaurants.
Other things to note Because we're at the intersection of three Island roads, our location is great for exploring the Island. Acadia NP, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and the 'Quiet Side' of MDI are all close by. Be prepared for summer traffic! Our once-quiet farm road is now a busy thorough-fare that runs from one end of the island to the other.
An Island bus service, supported by L.L. Bean, stops just across the road and provides free service into Bar Harbor and throughout the national park.
Bangor International Airport is 45 miles away -- approximately an hour's drive. The regional airport, Hancock County/Bar Harbor, is approximately 2 miles from our house and barn.

What a great place! Owners were great to work with and have a ton of knowledge of the area, so if you aren't sure what or where to go, ask them! If we are ever back in the area will definitely stay here again!
We enjoyed the friendly greeting and the tour of the Barn we stayed in. The screened in porch was great to sit on and read, it was a little chilly to eat outside in the evening. The rooms were clean and welcoming. We would definitely stay here again.
This is our second time staying here, and it did not disappoint. Jane and Paul are wonderful hosts and the property is simply lovely. We especially love the screen porch. We will definitely be back again.
The home is beautiful and full of amenities! We really enjoyed the recommended hikes and the directions and maps were incredibly helpful! The host, Jane and Paul were wonderful to work with and very helpful! We had a wonderful time in Bar Harbor and will definitely be back!
The North End of the Barn was spotless, and well-stocked with supplies and breakfast foods. Jane and Paul are welcoming hosts, keep beautiful gardens. The barn is a short drive from all parts of Acadia. We'll be back!
We cannot say enough great things about Jane and Paul!!! They welcome you with open arms like family! The property is beautiful and within a few miles of Acadia national park. Jane gave us an excellent rundown of the area, where to hike , bike, eat... it made our stay easy! Thank you both for letting us stay on your property... the best VRBO we have had!!
Reservation process was easy, excellent communication with owner & accommodations were superior! Amenities provided were a bonus including hiking maps & information on each trail. Only negative was the location being on a main street was an adjustment hearing the traffic during the night.
A beautiful place if you are looking for somewhere that is relaxing and in a place that is easy to get to all the sights. The couple in charge are full of information and are lovely to boot. They believe in lots of little personal touches that mean a lot. They’ll guide you in all the right directions for the most wonderful vacation in Bar Harbor.
We were so impressed by this property in every way. Great hosts who left us a lot of provisions from the jump. Clean, beautiful place and property. The location was close to Acadia and Bar Harbor with lots of maps and info on park hikes. Great store across the street with breakfast sandwiches and ice cream. Also can easily walk to Atlantic brewery for live music and fantastic bbq and cocktails. The property was gorgeous and we were treated so well. 10 out of 10!
We had a delightful experience staying Jen and Paul’s place. They are amazing hosts. Gave us wonderful directions and tips for everyone.
The place was beautifully decorated, super clean and very well equipped 🙏
One drawback was that there is almost no or very little sound proofing between the rooms.
The experience was so awesome that I would most certainly come back again 🌺
Jane and Paul, our gracious hosts, do everything possible to welcome visitors: from personally meeting guests, providing a breakfast goodie basket along with OJ, coffee, yogurt and half and half in the Frig., sharing maps with favorite trails (and hiking levels) highlighted… all in all, providing a comfortable residence for your stay. The renovated barn (Hopefully, you can see the “before” pictures.) is an architectural masterpiece!. Very clean with a cozy porch and den area… don’t forget to admire the eclectic and whimsical art too! Thanks for making our stay in Acadia such a relaxing one!
This absolutely adorable and completely modern VRBO was fantastic! This historical livery barn which was converted into a beautiful two-bedroom modern unit was better than we could have imagined. Extremely clean and they had all the amenities that they had listed and more! Owners had great communication with us and even supplied us with great maps for Acadia National Park trails based on their personal experience. The location to Acadia National Park and downtown Bar Harbor can't be beat. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Maine. This unit met all our hopes and dreams making our anniversary trip one of the best. Laura
This property is a wonderful renovated/converted barn dating from the 1850’s. Our unit featured two bedrooms with very comfortable beds, two bathrooms with large showers, a well equipped kitchen, a downstairs den/dining area, an upstairs sitting area, and a large, very comfortably furnished screened porch. A washer and dryer were available for our use, as well as bicycles. The village of Town Hill is located in north central Mount Desert Island, making all parts of the island and Acadia National Park easily accessible. We spent a wonderful week there and only wish our stay could have been longer!
We can’t say enough about this rental. The location to Bar Harbor and Acadia. The cleanliness of the restored barn, impeccable! The hosts Jane and Paul, so knowledgeable, so helpful, provisions to get you started, maps to coordinate with your level of hiking/biking. The rental has EVERYTHING you would need. Everything about it was perfect for us, even a laundry area. Jane and Paul are very passionate about their place and they have every right to be. It is LOVELY. Thank you so very much ♥️ You have earned all the 5 stars ⭐️
This was our 5th stay in a VRBO & hands down was the best! Jane and Paul personally welcomed us upon arrival and showed us around the property. They were more than accommodating- having bikes, yard games, and snacks available. Everything was meticulous! Paul had a color coded hiking map of ANP that we referred to and relied on during our hikes. Both were available for any question we had. The place was perfect for myself and my 2 sons. It is cozy and very welcoming. We enjoyed a few meals and rest time on the screened porch. Location is perfect too. It’s a no-brained , if you’re going to Bar Harbor you have to stay here! If we ever get back up there, we will stay here again. They set the bar very high!!
We had a wonderful stay here. The accommodations were perfect! . Paul and Jane shared information about the area and gave us some suggestions about hiking, dining… We highly recommend this unique place and we would definitely like to visit them again!
The property was lovely with many amenities and close to everything. Jane and Paul provided some staples to get us going, invaluable advice about hiking and activities, and great restaurant suggestions. Paul even transported his small boat for us so the young adults could boat on a lake and could motor out to see some seals.
They are marvelous hosts. You will be happy that you stayed with them.
Wonderfully remodeled stable with all the conveniences. Hosts were very friendly and helpful and supplied all kinds of treats and staples. Way above the expected. Would recommend to anyone.
We thouroughly enjoyed our week-long stay in the North Barn. It has been beautifully converted into a very comfortable vacation spot while retaining much of its original character. On top of that, it is tastefully furnished and has all the amenities you could ask for.
We especially appreciated being on the "quiet" side of the island, and we enjoyed exploring and hiking in areas that were new to us. Paul's hiking guide was a great help! Jane also suggested some nearby restaurants and they were all excellent recommendations.
Overall, we are so thankful we found this spot and have many wonderful memories of our time at Town Hill.
The north barn was a fantastic place to stay. Very nice location close to Acadia. Owners extremely helpful in everything from hikes to favorite restaurants. Enjoyed a day of hiking as much as our evenings in the barn.
A perfect place for two couples! Jane and Paul were awesome hosts. The screened in porch was ideal for early morning coffee and happy hours. Great location for all the trails, Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor.
Absolutely delightful place to stay and just terrific hosts. Great location - centrally located to hit all parts of the island. The north barn is beautiful and Jane and Paul have thought of everything. Our hosts provided everything we needed to hit the ground running - from bikes we could use to snacks and provisions to a hiking map detailing the best places to go. We will be back!
My husband and I had an amazing experience staying in Acadia! Jane and her husband were unbelievably accommodating! The space was clean, spacious and exactly what we were looking for. This was our first time in Acadia and they left us maps with highlighted trails and descriptions to check out, which helped us greatly! We were very close to restaurants in Bar Harbor and loved the location. We would absolutely recommend their place! Had a wonderful, peaceful and great time!

About the host
Hosted by Jane Weathersby
When I was in college I worked in Acadia National Park in the summers. After I graduated, I stayed and worked on the Island for a number of years before moving back to Atlanta. Of course, I always wanted to come back to Mt. Desert Island, but my career, my husband's business, our children, elderly parents -- all those very important things came first. When the opportunity to move popped up, my husband, Paul, and I jumped at the chance. We both grew up in large, Southern families. Guests from all over the neighborhood -- and all over the world -- were often at our dining tables. We multiplied that happy energy in our Atlanta home. When we decided to move to Maine, we knew we wanted to infuse our new place with a similar upbeat vibe. We also wanted to create a special place for people coming to experience the Maine Coast and Acadia National Park. So here we are, living our best life, enjoying old friends and making new ones, meeting amazing people and working hard everyday to provide an extraordinary guest experience for everyone who stays with us.
Why they chose this property
Our old, timber frame house was built in 1847. The barn was built sometime before 1850 and served as the Livery Stable for this end of Mt. Desert Island which was primarily a farming community for a couple of hundred years. Paul has spent his career designing and building homes, and he gets all the credit for saving the barn -- which was falling in -- re-designing it, and creating two beautiful apartments within. He also renovated our house and tucked a cozy Suite Under the Eaves for guests.
What makes this property unique
The hiking in Acadia National Park is some of the best in the U.S. It's fun. It's accessible and the views are spectacular. Paul has put together a great guide to his favorite hikes in Acadia, and he's marked a trail map as a companion to the guide. Our guests love it!
Additionally, the Carriage Roads in Acadia are fantastic for cycling. We have excellent Cannondale bikes to share, along with helmets and racks.
