About this property
77 Acre Private Sanctuary near Kettle Moraine Trails, Alpine Valley & History.
This amazing property is located 20 minutes northeast of Geneva Lake and Delavan Lake, 75 minutes southeast of Madison, 45 minutes southwest of Milwaukee and 1.75 hours northwest of Chicago. It is situated within minutes drive of the gorgeous Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit parcels (10 minutes to Emma, 15 to John Muir, 5 minutes to McMiller trail heads). Additionally, the remarkable Lu Lu Lake State Natural Area is within a 10 minute walk down Nature Road. These and other nearby large scale natural areas offer many miles of trails and expanses of uninterrupted nature. Thus, we offer perfect accommodations for birders and outdoor recreationists, as well as small (max. 8) family gatherings.
In addition to the large public open spaces nearby, our site’s 77 acres are incrementally being restored and managed as woodland, savanna, prairie, wetland and aquatic native ecosystems. Miles of private mowed trails for hiking and snowshoeing launch from the front door of the house. Limited single track biking and fishing are allowed by pre-arrangement.
Our 1954 Mid-Century Modern 'Kettle House' is modest, partially updated, and very well situated on the terraced site, with lots of indoor-outdoor views and amenities including two wood burning fireplaces, small outdoor heated pool, new outdoor hot tub, outdoor fire pit (wood provided), gas grill, bird feeding stations, screen porch and patio seating. Spring and fall warbler migration are particularly wonderful times of year here! If you love being in the natural outdoor environment, you will find respite and relaxed enjoyment at our Kettle House.
In the immediate yard of the house, the pool frames a lovely setting that includes a fountain, screen porch, sandbox and tire swing. A remnant and restored gravel hill prairie covers what would typically be mowed lawn. Respecting the site’s plants and animal life while enjoying them will be expected of all Guests, as is being courteous of all neighbors in this quiet rural setting.
We have enjoyed this incredible property for over 25 years and are at a point in our lives that we are ready to share it with others who will appreciate the opportunity to immerse oneself in a beautiful environment while not being far from three large metropolitan areas. The ease of access to nearby amenities, especially the State Forest trail systems and the Villages of Eagle, East Troy, Mukwonago and Palmyra (restaurants, gas stations and Old World Wisconsin, Alpine Valley, Elegant Farmer, Eagle Spring Lake, Lu Lu Lake and Crooked Creek, etc.) all make staying here easy, relaxing, recreational, and enjoyable.
The house has the potential to sleep 8, with three private bedrooms (one queen bed and two double/twin bunk beds). Sheets and towels are provided, with Guest laundering of items used expected at the end of the stay (cleaners make beds). Two bathrooms include a walk-in shower and tub/shower. Washer and drier available; bring your own detergent. Kitchen includes gas stove and range, refrigerator, freezer, small dishwasher, microwave, toaster, misc. appliances and lots of kitchen equipment, dishes and utensils.
Skylights and lots of windows provide ample light and views of surrounding savanna that features a handful of remarkable old specimen Bur and White Oaks, intermixed with Shagbark Hickories. Our favorite room is the living room where floor to ceiling windows make it feel as if you are sitting outside all year round.
During the colder months, with a fire in the hearth, a drink in hand, and a game or movie on the flat screen TV, the Kettle House offers a great place to kick back. If you can’t completely unplug, complimentary WiFi and a corner home office in the breezeway allow for dedicated work and creative space.

This was our second stay this year. Fantastic to be able to walk out the door onto paths through the woods and then refresh in the pool! Absolutely delightful!
77 Acres is a very special place. I’ve visited several times over the last five years in the spring and fall. It’s exciting to see how the hosts have continued to restore the native ecosystem. Bring binoculars and a camera. The pool is the perfect size for hanging out in. It’s shallow, almost like a kiddie pool for grown ups. I love it. If you like birds and plants, your mind is going to completely melt. There’s a tire swing next to the birdfeeder and if you stay fairly still, the birds go about their business and don’t shy away. Relatedly—if you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs or a white noise machine because the birds get up early. So does the sun, so you might want an eye mask. The home is thoughtfully put together. It’s not fancy or precious, none of that Live Laugh Love stuff on the walls, so it’s easy relax. If you’re just going for a long weekend, bring everything you’ll need so you don’t have to break the spell by going to the grocery store. There’s trails to hike and plenty to explore. Bring sneakers. The kitchen has the basics. However, the oven has a pizza oven and stone so I always make pizza. This year, I invited people who have never visited the property before and we all left feeling restored. This is kind of extra, but after my stay a few years ago I bought a house and left inspired to build a little habitat in my backyard for the birds and critters. Thank you for sharing this awesome place with us!!
We loved this property, tucked away in the woods with everything you’d need for a few days away. Kids loved the pool, we all enjoyed the hot tub and caught tons of fish. Thanks for the stay!
Our family had an amazing stay at the Kettle House. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind property that has been well-loved and cared for. We enjoyed swimming in the pool and relaxing in the hot tub, also brought our own fishing poles & had fun catching bass in the big pond! The house itself is so unique, with so much natural light and well thought out window placements that make you feel like you are part of the surrounding habitat. We will definitely book again!
We loved our weekend stay when we were in the area for concerts at Alpine Valley. Clean, comfortable and fun, with the pool, hot tub and hiking paths on the lovely property. The plants in and around the house were inspiring. We would love to stay again if we are in the area!
We had an amazing time. The house is lovely and the property has everything one needs to connect with nature. This is the second time we stayed and hope to come next summer. Thank you for sharing your home with us.
Loved everything about the house and property. House is definitely 70s mod, but it has charm and worked just fine for a few days trip. The pool and hot tub were perfect. The land is beautiful, so much to explore and see wildlife. It was a great escape from Chicago!
