Breath Taking View of the Highlands of the Roan with Hot Tub and Pool Table
The Mountain House is located on the highlands of the Roan in beautiful Roan Mountain, Tennessee.
Our Mountain House is at 4200 feet elevation, overlooking the beautiful Heaton Creek valley. Full length covered porches and plenty of comfortable chairs offer majestic mountain and valley views and great opportunities to enjoy our cool mountain breezes.
Because of the 4200+ feet elevation we recommend 4 WHEEL DRIVE vehicles for visits during November thru February. The state keeps Highway 143 fairly clean and the county usually plows Log Cabin Lane by noonish after a snowfall but there will still be some snow on the road and of course in the driveway. Having said that, it's absolutely beautiful at The Mountain House during and after a snowfall.
The Cherokee National Forest is a few hundred yards away in most directions and, as the crow flies, the Appalachian trail is less than 2 miles away. By road, Carvers Gap, and the Rhododendron Gardens are 3 miles. The Mountain House is minutes above the Roan Mountain State Park which offers swimming pool, tennis courts, camping, hiking, and fishing. Actually, several hundred miles of trout fishing streams (including the trophy trout designated Watauga river) are within a 30 mile radius.
We are conveniently located just 35 minutes away from the ski resorts, restaurants, and shopping of Banner Elk, Boone, and Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
If you are sitting on our back porch enjoying the view, Nascar racing will seem a world away. In fact, the Bristol Raceway is a pleasant 50 minute drive away.
We've made our Mountain House comfortable and cozy. You will feel right at home, and will want to come back often.
We hope you come visit, Richard and Martha

We've been coming to the Mountain house for 12 years with our family. The views never disappoint us. Fall is always beautiful on Roan Mountain. We look forward to returning next year.
The view was great, the instructions to arrive were thorough and no issue arriving. The garbage disposal was broken and a plumber was scheduled to come by during our stay which wasn't ideal but other than that, the rooms were clean, the heater kept the whole cabin warm, the hot tub was working perfectly, and we had plenty of fun playing pool. The roads to the cabin weren't too steep which was good because the last day out got snowed out.

Cristian, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at the Mountain House. Sorry about the problem with the disposal. We only found out about the problem after the guest left the morning of your arrival.
We'd love to have you visit again,

Good sides: The view is amazing from any level of the house! The house enough for a big group. Not good sides: Hot tub stopped working two days before move out. Advice: Make sure you have instructions and the door code before you arrival. The lower level room is the hottest one.
This house is all about the views. We spent many hours sitting on the deck, gazing at the mountains which seem to stretch on forever. The house is comfortable, albeit a bit dated in its decor. Be prepared for a LONG drive up the mountain to get there. It's very close to Carvers Gap where there's a lot of good hiking. Richard, the owner, was very responsive.
The home was warm and ready for our arrival. The veiw was beautiful at all times. It was very quiet and peaceful witch is exactly what we were looking for. The house was extremely homey and that made it comfortable for our children.
One of the main reasons I selected this property was because of the higher elevation. I booked this stay months in advance so I wanted to give my family the best chance to see snow while we were in the mountains. The Mountain House did not disappoint! We got some fantastic views of the mountains and valley along with the incoming weather and even managed to enjoy a few inches of snow. Definitely a property we would visit again! Thank you Richard for being a great host!
The cabin was exactly as listed and had breath taking views of the mountain range. We traveled to Sugar Mountain to ski over our stay and the roads were safe for travel granted the weather was around freezing most of the trip. Per the owners, a four-wheel drive/front wheel drive vehicle is a must during the winter during freezing/snowing weather as the local neighborhood road is not cleaned as regular as the state road. My overall rating of this property is 9 out of 10. There were a few items that could be updated; however, I highly recommend.

Wow View, Not Clean
Base3ment Bed sheets smell of sweet, had to wash, dishes in cabinet had dried food on them, not clean, lots of dust, Parking blocked by low branches, yard needs trimming. Narrow road and hard to back out. Wow View, with 2 hours of TLC would be a 9, as it was a cluttered messy 4.
The house is really beautiful. Walking in and seeing the how big the kitchen table is was reassuring for the rest of the house. The view is different every morning and every night depending on where clouds are sun is shining it's beautiful. The downside to the king bed is that it sinks in the middle so it's not the rest you're hoping for. Also the floors are dirty throughout the house and we had to wear foot covers. The hot tub was nice to have however there were so many chemicals in it that it bleached out the colors of our swimsuits and was unusable after 3 days. The owner was nice to chat with and able to help with most issues.
Great House to spend Thanksgiving weekend with Family, plenty of room for the 5 kids and 3 adults to be together as well as apart. We would stay here again and probably will the next time I visit my brother and his kids. Nice fireplaces and great large rooms for gathering together and great views
Absolutely awesome property, this cabin was absolutely beautiful and the views were breathtaking. After a half dozen stays in cabins rented through Verbo. This is absolutely number one. It feels like home with massive space. This cabin is gorgeous and the pictures do not do it justice.
This es a great location not far from the Appalachian trail! Good rooms and the pool table and cues were in good contrition which is more then I can say about other locations.
We all had a great time at Richard and Martha's cabin. The drive up was beautiful but a little scary. Just not use to the mountains. The road leading to the cabin is much scarier but we got through it. Again not use to the single road with mountain and drop off on each side. Definitely needs 4 wheel drive. The cabin was absolutely beautiful. The pictures don't do it justice. The beds were great. Kitchen fully stocked. Pool table was fun. Fireplace was perfect for roasting marshmallows. The kids loved the hot tub. My SIL and I wished it got a bit hotter. Couldn't get it past 95. The mountain views were breathtaking. They were different everyday. Met some wonderful neighbors but for the most part we were alone. The history in the cabin was so cool to read and look at. One of the best trips my family had in a long time. The dog became a mountain goat lol. Wished there was more room for the kids to run around outside on a safer playing field but we hiked enough and utilized the playground below. Thank you again.
My friends and I rented the cabin for a weekend, and the entire experience was great and comfortable! The owners are very helpful and welcoming. Overall we felt like we are home!
Everything you need to relax, rest, converse, eat, sleep and renew! Loved the personalized welcome on the hand-written chalk-board.
The photographs online do not clearly represent what you see or feel when you walk in the cabin - warmth, comfort and space. The home is so much better than it appears online.
Highlights - wood burning fireplaces with wood and starter-logs provided, well-stocked kitchen for cooking and serving, lovely round dining table for 8 well-suited for lingering at the table in conversation, great sleeping beds, and 2 full size beds in the loft (not seen in the photographs) along with the sleeper sofa, and - the view is amazing!
(Be prepared for no cable/internet connection typical of being in the mountains but Direct TV is available on the TV in the main room of this home.)
Outstanding views but we got chemical burns from the hot tub and the pool table wasn’t worth it
Pros:
When we first pulled up we couldn’t believe the outstanding views. The house was clean and taken care of. The location was ideal for hiking Roan Mountain. Owner sent a hand drawn picture of location of property. The kitchen had everything you could need. The two fire places with good dried wood was awesome. Access to a propane grill was a plus!
Cons:
When I inquired more about the house through the messaging service through VRBO, the owner didn’t respond. We couldn’t find the place at first because the house number was covered up. We had to walk up to the house and remove the decoration that was obstructing the house number to make sure it was the right place. Multiple people that got in the hot tub left with chemical burns or hives. We are hoping it’s just too much chlorine and not bacterial but either way, it’s not ok. The pool table only had one straight stick and no good tips. For most people this shouldn’t matter but we rented this place specifically for the pool table and hot tub to have something fun to do.
All in all it was a good place with an amazing view but don’t rent it for the hot tub or the pool table because both disappoint.
The view was incredible - definitely a highlight! The house had plenty of room for our family and we loved the cozy atmosphere. We had a great weekend stay.

We grew up close to the Smokey Mountains and our home is in Maryville, Tn. We bought the Mountain House in 1998 and fell in love with th view and Roan Mountain. So much so that in 2005 when a 75 year old flooded out building in the village of Roan Mountain came up "for sale" we bought it, completely renovated and opened Mad Martha's Cafe and Twigs which sells antiques and "all things of the mountains".
We especially enjoy the peacefulness and quiet beauty of Roan Mountain but when we want fine dining or shopping Elizabethton and Johnson City are just 35 minutes down the mountain and Banner Elk, Boone, and Blowing Rock are 35 minutes up the mountain in North Carolina. We'd love to have you come for a visit to our Mountain House.
