About this property

Gem of a cabin with craftsman touches in a very lovely setting with internet

This is a secluded gem of a cabin with craftsman touches in a very lovely setting. It sits in a private corner of the property with magical filtered light through the oak and redwood forest. South facing with a beautiful mountain/canyon view it is very spacious (aprox 600sf) with the tinted plaster walls and arches giving it a very warm, old world feel. The quaint little bedroom is accessed by an outdoor covered staircase and has a spectacular view of the canyon. There is very nice deck space on three sides of the cabin, where one can sit in sun or shade while enjoying the abundant bird life and forest/mountain/canyon views. Or relax in our deep clawfoot tub that sits in our redwood gardenroom. Deer and quail are commonly seen, with the occasional glimpse of a bobcat or fox. And no need to bring your own water, we've plenty of good well water here.
We now have a wood-fired sauna on the property, which is available to guests as well as ourselves. The sauna has a large, covered deck and sits in a quiet location shaded beneath a giant live oak, with a beautiful canyon view. The perfect place to calm your spirit and feel the bounty of nature.

The property is conveniently located halfway between Carmel/Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur Proper. Three miles inland and over 1,100 ft in elevation, we are usually above the fog , which creates unique views as it moves in and out of the canyon like slow tide. We are 4/10ths of a mile up a well maintained dirt rd.......access is rarely a problem and then only during heavy storms in the winter months at these times 4WD is recommended , though not often necessary.
This land is a place for quietude and solitude...a place to be replenished and calmed by the simple beauty of nature. We hope that our guests treat this as an opportunity to experience these wildlands with reverence and come away refreshed in a way that only nature can deliver. So please respect this quiet for your sake as well as those who live here.

It was our little unexpected rainforest. Not that it rained just that it had that feel.

Would/ will definitely look to stay again in the future and have told friends and family. Was more than we had hoped for. Excellent.

Perfect location

Monica and Joel’s place is the perfect home base location for exploring all the best spots in Carmel and Big Sur! We stayed 3 nights and explored pebble beach, point lobos, garrapata, Big Sur, Julia pfieffer burns, and lots of other spontaneous spots along the way. The cabin was quaint and comfortable. We used the kitchen to cook our breakfasts and dinners each day, it had everything we needed. Mónica and Joel were great hosts! Thank you so much!

Amazing stay and experience

I can’t say enough about how awesome this stay was. From the hosts - who were so friendly, helpful and outgoing, to the location (amazing) to the cabin (outstanding) - everything about the stay was perfect. The cabin was so nicely decorated, there were so many personal touches that were awesome. I have to believe that this is one of the best properties available (at a reasonable price) in the Big Sur area!!

Amazing stay at cabin in Big Sur

We had an amazing time staying at the cabin in Big Sur!! We loved sitting outside in the porch drinking our coffee in the morning and bundling up and enjoying the wood burning stove in the evening. We would come back again in a heartbeat.

Beautifully secluded cabin in Big Sur

Loved our weekend at Monica & Joel's cabin! tucked on the side of a hill up in the woods, we enjoyed solitude, views and outstanding nights' sleep. The cabin is quirky in great ways. the wood-fired sauna was perfect way to wind down the weekend.

Wonderful

We loved our stay here. It was warm and cozy during cool weather in April and we had lots of privacy. You probably will want to bring some groceries because the location is a bit remote, but that is what makes it so wonderful. We would love to go back one day and stay longer.

Magical Little Cabin in the Mountains

This is maybe one of the best places I've every stayed! Monica and Joel create have a whimsical and very special place that is nestled in tress and it was a joy to stay there. Monica was very warm and communicative. The cabin was clean and cozy. I have already recommended them to a friend and would not hesitate to do so in the future.

Quiet, Clean, Cabin in the woods. What's not to love!

Fantastic cabin up off the beaten track. Very quiet, yet still only a short drive to Hwy1 and on to Carmel or Monterey. Monica (our host) was helpful and attentive. We didn't turn on the TV our entire time there, and didn't miss it either. Our first VRBO trip and total success.

Absolute peace and bliss

Monica and Joel are absolutely warm and wonderful, we had a great time chatting with them in between extremely peaceful reading times out on the balcony or sitting by the glorious wood stove fire. The property is certainly decently remote, which to me is a feature not a flaw, I can't recommend staying here enough. We'll be back for sure, thank you Monica and Joel!

Best stay I’ve had in big sur

Monica, was a fantastic host. The property was clean spacious and beautiful. All exit road got washed out while we were in Big Sur and go stuck one night, Monica gave us an extra night to stay at the cabin. One of the nicest things anyone has done for us. Thank you again Monica!

A lovely getaway

It was a treat to stay here, and we were grateful for terrific weather, the chance to use to sauna (do try it!), and the (pleasant!) quriks of the cabin. The quiet and the beauty were rather welcome. The cabin isn't as secluded as the images might make it seem, and I wouldn't plan to rely on the WiFi, but those are small things.

Peaceful Weekend Getaway

My partner and I had such a wonderful time staying here! Truly a gem in this area... an affordable way to experience that magical Big Sur life. The cabin was stocked with anything we would need and the views were soul-replenishing. The road getting in was a little dicey, but that just made it feel like more of an escape. Cannot get over how great the VHS and DVD collection was... we didn't even need the wifi. Telling all our friends about this place and will definitely be back someday!

Magnificent experience

We LOVED our stay in this very secluded cabin! It is built into the forested canyon surrounded by trees. You have to carefully follow signs on rural bumpy roads. I am adventurous but would never attempt to find this at night.Monica- the owner- is very sweet and helpful. She makes sure you print directions and gone before dark. Staying here was a real priceless part of our forest trip to Big Sur. You wake up to peaceful woods and birdsong. Only 1 bathroom- fine with us. Fill yet small kitchen was super. The refrigerator allows you to store basic sandwiches and coffee creamer. 3 people slept on futons, as stated. So very basic in that way.Just an awesome experience and we feel very blessed to stay.

A truly magical place

I literally cannot stop gushing to everyone I know about this vacation - the best of my life, without exaggeration. The Big Sur area is incredible (hiking, excellent restaurants) and the cabin was the perfect hideaway for restful mornings and cozy evenings. The road up to the cabin is incredible - a bit daunting the first time but we quickly learned the way. Magical, giant redwoods, beautiful rustic homes that look like they grew there. The cabin itself is so cozy, and the view in every direction is truly glorious - nothing like tea on the porch as the sun comes into the valley and the birds begin to sing, or waking up after a lazy post-hike nap in the bedroom loft, surrounded by windows, or a hot bath outdoors with a misty drizzle falling and the trees swagged in fog. I can't think of a better place to stay! Do take note: the cell reception is non-existent at the cabin. The wifi helps, but it's a little spotty. For some folks (me!) this is something in the plus column, but it's probably not for everyone.

Cozy, Light-filled, Nest in the Trees

3 of us spent 3 nights here and we all loved the setting and the comfort of the well -designed space. You’ll find whatever you need in the kitchen to cook a substantial meal. The upstairs bedroom is really cozy and lovely, and yes, you do have to go outside to get to the bathroom in the main space downstairs. It was still pretty chilly out but the wood stove heated the living room well. We really enjoyed sitting on the deck in the morning sun drinking coffee and watching all the birds as they glided and swooped through - hawks and acorn woodpeckers and jays. A pair of binos will add to your pleasure! We also loved the wood-fired sauna which got plenty hot! The hosts are warm and responsive. Best place I’ve stayed in the area and the fact that it’s halfway between Big Sur and Carmel is ideal!

We have lived in the area for over 28 years, and on this property for 19 where we have raised a large family. All of our children still live in the area, and our 16 year old daughter, Sienna, is still with us. I am a carpenter/builder and have rarely had to leave this canyon for work while my wife, Monica, has worked for many years at a fine restaurant in Carmel though now she stays plenty busy running this business. We have been avid backpackers through the years, taking the entire family on many hikes. We are a storehouse of info regarding the best local restaurants, hiking trails, beaches, river spots, etc. so please feel free to ask.

Why they chose this property

Since first passing through here as teenagers, we have felt that this is one of the most beautiful places in California, if not the entire country. There is a magic in the air here.

What makes this property unique

The peace one feels while living in the forest amongst the wildlife and beautiful always changing scenery. It is a spectacular area, and every year we feel its beauty more deeply.
