THINGS TO DO
There are so many things to do and see near Duncans Mills.
:: Duncans Mills "downtown"
The quaint town of Duncans Mills is, well, adorable - and it's walking distance from the cabin. Grab a locally roasted organic coffee and baked-from-scratch scone at Gold Coast Coffee & Bakery and bask in the sun on their back patio. Then head across the street to check out the charming Poet's Corner Bookshop. Grab a book, puzzle, or game for evenings by the fire. Meander the other charming shops, antique galleries, and wine tasting room.
:: Hiking
There are endless hikes nearby, the closet being the Freezeout trailhead just a short walk up the street. Hike a few miles, or for those more ambitious do the Islands in the Sky 9.6 mile loop trail. This trail takes you up through the trees and into the grassy hillsides. It's a beautiful loop, and you'll earn your dinner.
Take a short 7 minute drive to the coastal town of Jenner, and you'll find beach hikes and more. AllTrails is a great resource for additional hiking trails in the area.
:: Groceries
The Duncans Mills General Store carries locally sourced meats, cheese, pantry basics and snacks. If you're looking to stock up on Sonoma County grass fed meats, this is the place to stop! The next closet grocery store is Barlett's Market in Monte Rio, or the Safeway in Guerneville for a full selection.
:: Restaurants
Cafe Aquatica in Jenner is a great stop for coffee and a midday bite to eat. The cafe overlooks the ocean, and they have live music on Saturdays and Sundays. For dinner, there is Cafe Fear Cafe or the Blue Heron in Duncans Mills. Looking for a more elevated dining experience with beautiful coastal views? Try The River's End Restaurant in Jenner, or head further up the coast to Timber Cove (about 20 min drive).
HISTORY
Duncans Mills has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. It was originally known as "Sullenger's Sawmill" after its founder, Alexander Duncan, who established a sawmill there in the 1870s. The mill provided lumber for the growing communities of San Francisco and the surrounding area during the California Gold Rush.
In 1877, the town was officially named Duncans Mills in honor of its founder. The town thrived as a bustling hub for timber and agricultural industries, with several mills, a general store, a hotel, and other businesses catering to the local population and travelers passing through.
Duncans Mills played a significant role in the region's economy until the early 20th century when changes in transportation and industry led to a decline in its importance. However, the town managed to maintain its historic charm and picturesque setting, attracting tourists and preserving its heritage.
Today, Duncans Mills is a popular destination for visitors seeking a glimpse into California's past. The town boasts well-preserved historic buildings, including the Blue Heron Inn, the historic Duncans Mills General Store, and the Christopher Queen Galleries, which showcase local art and history. Additionally, Duncans Mills hosts annual events such as the Russian River Rodeo and the Civil War Days reenactment, further celebrating its colorful history and culture.
