About this property

Toad Hall 1820s Historic Estate

Toad Hall, a spacious 1820s stone mansion, boasts 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and 21st century amenities. Its Greek Revival style is meticulously preserved, adorned with sculptures and art that embellish the interior. Situated on over 260 pastoral acres, the home is nestled in the heart of one of the most picturesque landscapes in the country, mere moments from Cooperstown. It's rich history is evident through its art and hand painted murals, creating a grand and intimate atmosphere in each room. Colonel Russell William built the house in 1828, designed by Englishman Edward Tillinghast during the nation’s optimism and prosperity after defeating the British in the War of 1812. President John Quincy Adams presided over the 24 states in the Union. The estate’s owner is a descendant of Hall of Fame inductee ‘Big Dan’ Brouthers, a renowned baseball long-ball hitter (1879-1904). Within the confines of the residence, a harmonious blend of period architecture and meticulously curated design unfolds. Original stonework and hand-painted artwork adorn the walls, instilling an unparalleled ambiance that is both grand and intimate. Throughout the mansion, thoughtfully positioned sculptures and art pieces contribute to the narrative of each room, weaving a visual tapestry that unfolds with every exploration. Each detail has been meticulously crafted to preserve the home’s unique history while simultaneously providing contemporary conveniences and privacy. From the property, enjoy breakfast on the veranda, leisurely walks or runs along Oaks Creek, and wildlife viewing in the pond, beaver dams, deer grazing, and eagles soaring above. Swim in the Mountain View seasonal salt water pool or fish in the lake. The property also inspires landscape and wildlife painting and photography.
Toad Hall is a private residence for your exclusive use. However, it is important to note that the estate also includes other houses and horse stables, which are private. Please exercise caution when approaching any animals on the property. The outdoor spaces, including the backyard patio, fire pits, seating areas, and grills, are shared among Toad Hall, Toad Hall Carriage House, and 6418 Cottage. Similarly, the ponds, trails, and fields are accessible to all guests. When booked together, these amenities offer a memorable group experience. The estate’s maintenance staff ensures that the grounds are maintained in optimal condition. The estate’s owner will be available to greet guests and provide a tour of the vast property. Rest assured that both the staff and the owner will not intrude upon your stay.

The property is out of a fairy tale! It is beautiful. We walked all over and my kids were in heaven. The home is old but clean and has so much historical character. The host lives on property and was so helpful and kind. It made our Cooperstown baseball experience even better. 12 min to Dreams Park. It was a great stay!

We stayed with three small families for Cooperstown Dreams Park. The beds and bathrooms were clean and comfy. It was a ten minute drive to the field and close to everything. There is also a cottage next door another family could rent if you wanted to stay with another team family. The pool and the grill were added bonuses. It is an older, historic house and has a lot of character. We loved the large dining room table for meals and the washer / dryer. The host was very accommodating.

The house was HOT! The ac worked but not very well. The AC does not cool the first floor. It stayed between 76 and 79. The AC on the second floor isn’t cold but it’s bearable.  The kitchen was not stocked with essentials for a family who would be cooking. Inadequate kitchen supplies and the pots and pans are not suitable for cooking for more than 4 people The outdoor eating area could not be used because of chicken poop all over the tables and chairs. In order to get to the pool, pond and outdoor eating area you had to step around chicken and dog poop. The outdoor patio is filthy and covered in chicken poop. The pool and outdoor patio is about 60 yards from the house. You can’t see either from the house. The homeowner lives in another house on the property and watches your every move. We had my family of 7 with 3 cars and she questioned if we were having a party. The posted rules are not the same as what was on the website. The pool and patio is not visible from the house. You have to walk about 400 feet to the pool.

Thank you so much for your comments. All our reviews to date have been near perfect so I will address your comments point by point. First, sorry to hear that you were hot. The house has a thermostat upstairs and downstairs. The morning you left upstairs was 67 and downstairs 68. Not sure what went wrong when you were here and you did not contact us for help. As for the chickens my apologies, most families love them, the kids spend hours chasing them and go into the coop and collect the eggs. I hope you enjoyed yours. Having the pool separated from the house (50 yards) is common on an historic estate of 260 acres. It's not a hotel, but we apologize for the inconvenience. I live in the owners quarters as the onsite property manager to tend to everyones needs, respond to visitor requests or issues that arise, water the plants, take care of the garbage, meet and greet people and so on. As for the 'party' that was a misunderstanding. When a car was blocking the driveway I asked if you were having guests. That meant we would have to find another place to park the car so people could get in and out. As for the utensils, pots and pans well this is up for debate. We have had many more folks in the house and when they needed something they simply asked. Not sure about the posted rules not being the same as the website. I am sorry the home did not meet your expectations. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

This house was lovely. It was perfect for our stay. It is 15 min from Cooperstown Dreams Park which was perfect. My daughter and I had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this home. Annbritt was also very easy to communicate with. Would definitely stay there again if we were in that area.
