About this property

Rustic retreat -So much fun - log playground, hot tub, concrete game court

This spacious residence has easy, paved road access, yet it is secluded in the mountains where you bask in clean air and brilliant winter sun.

The backyard forms your own private park. You can relax while your children are engrossed with the safety and excitement of their own secluded space. The large log playground provides swings for tiny tots to adults. Its log structure forms a balance bridge, fireman's pole, a sliding board, climbing tires. Enjoy "King of the Log" on a nearby balance beam. You can play basketball on the concrete court or put up the adjustable net and grab the equipment for playing pickle ball, volleyball, or badminton. We try to keep a tether ball supplied, however, the local bears try to eat it. National Forests and a Woodland Park land preserve border the property
These provide hundreds of acres of picturesque hiking. A treasure map leads the adventurous through the mountains to an old gold mine. There are hammocks, , lawn chairs, a gas grill, and a soothing waterfall feature during summer. We are located in the beauty of Ute Pass.

Relaxation is enriched with our spacious spa / game room. There you can soak in our hot tub - where you can cheer on your energetic friends as they compete in billiards, ping pong, air hockey, or foosball.

Since your vacation is a time for rest, we splurged on the bedding. Memory-foam on the mattresses provides form-fitting support. Sleep in the unique, theme-decorated bedrooms - each is an imagination experience.

'King’s Crown' room has a king-sized bed. 'Country Garden' has two queen size beds. 'Grandma’s Attic' has two twins, one of which is an adjustable bed that can be positioned for special sleeping needs. 'Wilderness Trail' has two twin beds. 'Mountain Adventure' has two twin mattresses inside a large tent. Finally, the upstairs balcony has a full-size hide-a-bed.

The house is especially designed to be environmentally friendly. Sun rays flood the house with toasty warmth during the winter, and in the summer the house is naturally cooled. Woodland Park's motto is 'City Above the Clouds,.' It boasts an average of 300 sunny days per year, more than San Diego, CA or Miami Beach, FL.

In the summer the 8500 foot elevation means pleasant days and cool nights. Another benefit of our high elevation, is that recent studies show that those on diets can quickly lose weight and keep it off for weeks afterwards by spending time at higher altitudes. And what great training for athletes when their bodies acclimatize to the high elevation.

Our expansive solar windows take advantage of the sun and clean mountain air. Through them you look on to your private yard. There is no central heating system, so on those occasional winter days when the sun is hidden, you set individual heaters in the rooms or better yet, your family will gather around your glowing fire in the wood stove. 'Roughing it' never felt so good.

The home is well stocked with an extra-large french door refrigerator/freezer with an ice maker and a constantly replenished cold water pitcher. Both are serviced with filtered water. We have. glass-top electric stove, dishwasher, drip coffee maker, large stainless steel cooking pans, a crock pot, hand mixer, blender, toaster, microwave and MUCH MORE - Plus we have on hand a selection of spices. There is baby equipment: an umbrella stroller,a high chair, a porta-crib, backpack baby carrier, stair guards.

We, the owners/managers live nearby so are immediately available to provide for your every need.

It was an ideal vacation spot . My kids and I haven’t been on a vacation together since they were little. Now that they are grown with children , some with , some without , they had a blast . Competing in basketball on the court , playing volleyball, swinging on the tire swings , running with their dogs in the large yard , and also swinging in the hammocks . Absolutely happy with our stay . We cannot believe how rustic and homey it was . The water fountain was peaceful too . So much to do in the area as well. Every day was an adventure and just a small drive from the house. The views of peace and serenity from the porch swing to the playground. We hope to be back next year ! The beds were comfortable, the house is large , and everyone was able to have their own space . Karen was so nice and gracious . Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful house - little piece of heaven ! There was 10 of us .

Great Location

There are many things to do within a 15-20 minute drive from the property. A quick walk up the trail into the national forest gives you a great view of Pikes Peak. The property itself offers a stocked kitchen and a great outdoor space.

We chose this property for its "wheelchair accessible" listing, but it presented major challenges for me as a wheelchair user. The entrance walkway, made of uneven log rounds, was a trip hazard and blocked my motorized chair. A 4.5” step required my 3’ ramp, but tight landscaping limited maneuvering space. Inside, furniture and a large rug hindered navigation. Host Karen was responsive, allowing us to rearrange items, which helped. The first-floor bedroom was spacious, but the 27.5” door and 27” hallway clearance were tight. The bathroom was inaccessible: the main entry was 21.25” with a 1.5” threshold, and the bedroom’s shower entry was 23”. The shower (35”x36”, 4.5” lip, no bench) was unusable, forcing me to use bed baths. With my wife’s help, I managed toilet transfers. The game room (hot tub, pool table, etc.) in the garage needed my 5’ ramp to access due to a level drop. The outdoor seating area was unreachable (4.5” threshold). A furniture piece narrowed the second-floor stair access to 28”, though this didn’t affect me. Karen was accommodating, but the “accessible” label is misleading due to uneven paths, tight doorways, and an unusable bathroom. I hope this review informs other wheelchair users and encourages the host to address the classification of the property for future guests.

Great family vacation home

My family of 12 had a great stay here! Even with no central heat, and lots of snow while we were there, the fireplace and electric heaters were more than enough heat. My only complaint would be not having a washer and dryer. Having to spend hours in a laundry mat on vacation was not ideal. Great place to stay with children. Lots of things for them to do as well. There’s lots of movies, but no cable, or satellite TV of any kind.

The perfect balance of cabin getaway and comfortable family home!

We had a wonderful spring break getaway with friends and family. The house was PERFECT for our group with 6 kids between 5-10 years old. Everything in the home was clean, comfortable, had everything we needed and nothing we didn't. We had the perfect mix of snow and warm sunny days this week so we enjoyed every feature of the home and property, especially the hiking trails right out the front door. The location was easily accessible and so close to so many attractions. One issue with water the first day was resolved within an hour. Thank you for sharing this treasure of a home.

Perfect family mountain home

This home was a perfect multi family vacation rental for us. Great for all ages. The kids loved the swing set. This beautiful home is nesting in the mountains with easy access to their local Walmart/Safeway nearby. Don’t forget to take your own shopping bags or pay for bags every time you go to the store. We ended up with 25 Walmart bags in seven days. Lol Best Colorado trip ever. We all enjoyed ourselves very much. Thank you for sharing your home!

Great family getaway

We really enjoyed our stay at Sun Mountain, and were able to stay plenty warm even with the snow. One thing to note is that the property doesn't have a washing machine as listed. They are conserving water and do not allow the usage of the washing machine. We had planned to use it during the stay, so that was a bummer. Overall, we had a great time with friends and family.

The Perfect Place

This was the best vacation our family has ever experienced and the house was so accommodating! When it rained, we had plenty of activities and space for our large family. The water fountain was our gathering place to relax and let the stress of life fall off of us. The grandchildren absolutely loved the playground and spent hours swinging and playing with watch other. The basketball court was used to play some competitive basketball, which was so much fun to see experience trump youth. There are great trails near the house, wildlife all around to see and still close to stores for shopping. The house was well stocked and very clean. I would highly recommend anyone with a large family to stay here. We definitely plan on being a repeat customer!

Comfy, rustic mountain home conveniently located

We loved our stay in this rustic, comfortable, spacious mountain home. This house was highly recommended by my aunt and her family who stayed here over the summer. Myself, my husband and 3 kids (ages 13, 11, and 9) as well as my parents stayed here for one week. As soon as we drove up, the kids were outside playing! The house is well equipped, has lots of things for the kids to do, and has hiking trails right in the backyard. Our first day here was Easter Sunday. To our surprise, 2 little rabbits showed up in the morning right outside the door. They only came that day--on Easter! Instead of an Easter egg hunt, we hunted for the cave and secret treasure on the property. So much fun! We also saw deer almost every evening. The house is very convenient to Walmart, Safeway, many restaurants, and stores. Check out the Goodwill in Woodland Park if you forgot something! So many attractions are close by! Our favorites were: Garden of the Gods, US World War II Aviation Museum, Helen Hunt Falls, Pike's Peak, Mueller State Park, Colorado Wolf & Rescue, Cripple Creek, Manitou Springs, and so many more are within driving distance. The owners, Bob and Karen, are just a phone call away and are so helpful and accommodating. We enjoyed "unplugging" here. We did 2 1000 piece puzzles over the week and only watched one movie for the whole week! It's a great place to unplug and rewind. The weather for the first week of April was wonderful. Cold at night with daytime highs of 56-60. Perfect for hiking and exploring the outdoors. On our last day, we were delighted with snow!! We plan to come back and stay possibly in the summer!

Mixed feelings and feedback about this property. Beautiful setting and rustic charm.

I have mixed feedback regarding this property. The setting is unbelievably beautiful. The house is full of rustic charm and vintage touches. The place feels like “home” as it is not pristine and like my house; a couple of broken tiles, subtle coating of grease on the stove and things are worn. Perfect for my family! We didn’t feel the need to call out any issues with the home as there are several and they all seemed to add to the charm of the house. We truly enjoyed our stay! On the flip side, less than 24 hours after arriving we were contacted and asked if we had left our trash on top of the dumpsters rather than inside as specified on the owners manual. We hadn’t been there long enough to have garbage to take out but if we had, we certainly would have followed instructions. During our stay the septic people arrived to pump the septic system. We have a septic system at our home and know that it’s an unpleasant experience to have it pumped so it didn’t really bother us but if not familiar with it, it could be very offensive. The owner was there at the same time and did apologize for the inconvenience. It seems like this could have been better scheduled. After leaving the property we were told that our deposit would not be returned as there was writing on a bedroom wall. My husband saw the writing upon arrival and chalked it up to the worn charm of the home. It was disturbing to be accused of doing such a thing to someone else’s home ( we were a group of adults - USAFA grad parents and family no less with one 4 year old not even able to write let alone tall enough to have done the writing). We were able to resolve this unfortunate accusation with the owners and received our deposit refund but it has caused me to reconsider the type of home I will rent in the future. As I said, the home is charming, homey, a real treat in the mountains. The kitchen is easy to cook in and is fully equipped. We did enjoy our stay.

Old World Charm in a Great Location

We had 6 kids with us and they all stayed busy and loved the space outdoors. There is a TV under the stairs that we brought out for relaxed mornings with the littles. The temps during the day reached close to 100 and cooled at night in the 50's. The house stayed comfortable. It is also in a great location in the middle of you want to travel north or south and minutes from groceries.

Perfect for a Family Reunion Full of Mountain Memories!

We had a wonderful family reunion, including 7 kids from toddlers to teens. The property is perfect for a large group with outdoor space, playground, and ball court (pickleball with a mountain view!)Inside the house is spacious and has a lot of charm. The owner shared the amazing story of how their family built it.This is a rustic property with some quirks, the water pressure dips if the dishwasher is running and sound can travel to the bedrooms facing the main space. We worked around it easily by hanging in the game room at night and our toddler slept perfectly in the back room. We found space heaters and fans in each room, and there was a wood stove with plenty of firewood. When we arrived it was snowy, and when we left it was sunny and warm, we stayed comfortable the whole time. The kitchen was well stocked, with big pots and pans plus an outdoor grill that made it easy to cook all of our meals at the house. Expect wildlife in the mountains, we saw deer and the kids threw snowballs at a woodpecker who liked to wake us up.There's tons to do within 10-30 mins. We loved the nearby towns, the zoo, multiple challenging and kid-friendly hikes. The owner was kind and welcoming and went out of her way to accommodate our special needs, which we really appreciate. It’s clear she genuinely wants her guests to enjoy their time and make great memories. If you're looking for an epic, spacious, family-friendly spot, this is the place! Can't wait to come back!

Sad - Home needs major updating

I’m really sad to leave this review because I had high hopes for this place and I never want to hurt anybody’s business but I feel this property needs some major updates.Issues while a family of 13 stayed here - Mold in showerRugs smelt like mildew Mold in front closetBeds are extremely uncomfortable Rat poop in kitchen drawers Unusable knives would not cut any of our meats Holes under kitchen sink where animals could crawl inBroke griddle which was the only non-stick pan(Reached out to owner no response so we bought one) Worst cooking pans and appliances extremely oldNo access to treehouseno tetherball it was broke Pool ques for pool table not even usable and glasses in pockets to catch ballsNo tv’s set up And court for basketball not usable This house is big but needs some major updates! The last couple of days my family was there we all started having migraines and horrible breathing issues! I feel the property needs to have the black mold checked out that’s in this house and updated!

A Perfect Mountain Getaway

Our family of eight stayed here for our first week long vacation, and it was a perfect choice. The house is nestled in the mountains among wildlife, and has everything a kid needs to get away from screens and the monotony of daily life. We did daily activities nearby, and came back each day for dinner and hanging out either outside or playing inside. Needless to say, we had a blast, and hopefully we'll have the opportunity to come back in the future, though next time, it will be a family of nine. :)

Might Need to Update Description

Overall, our stay was good. There are a few things that made for a rough start. The Wi-Fi password was not readily available. The book with the directions and helpful hints about the property is extremely outdated and has a lot of impertinent information. The property does not have a washer and dryer because of the severe drought which resulted in a dry well. There is an underground tank that provides water to the house. The towels had to be placed outside before they could be used. They had seemingly been washed but put up damp. Since there is no washer, we had no way to wash them ourselves, which we would have done. Future renters may need to know this.

About the host

Hosted by Karen Magistrelli

Host profile image
We, Bob and Karen Magistrelli, built Sun Mountain Retreat for our family home. God carried us through the unknowns of construction - working miracles all along the way. We designed the home for kids - where they could be safe and have fun. We raised our seven children and numerous foster children here Years later we moved nearby to a home where we now take in men coming out of prison. We help the men start life over after years of isolation from society. Our income from Sun Mountain helps to provide for the needs of these men.

Why they chose this property

When our family home, now Sun Mountain Retreat, was no longer needed by the family, we could not bear to sell it, despite multiple buyer requests. We love this area and we love our family home. Our children are grown and settling in the immediate area. Making Sun Mountain a vacation home has involved all our children. Running it has been a great joy to us as we see our guests enjoying our home as much as we did.

What makes this property unique

Our most unique offering is the wide range of fun family activities right at our home - from a private backyard park to a large indoor recreation room and hot tub. Our home is central to a wide range of activities. Guests can enjoy the city offerings of beautiful Colorado Springs and can also be challenged with the outdoor activities of the mountains that surround us. Our home was designed to conserve our limited natural resources - as a 'green' home our guests can know they are part of needful conservation.
