Our lakes are full! Perfect location for daily swimming and adventuring at Whiskeytown Lake! Only 3 miles to the lake.
Please click on photos until you get full-size photos of the house and property for best view.
The home is located in the historic town of Shasta. Some refer to Shasta as Old Shasta. Our town has a Courthouse/Museum, Mercantile and Shorty's cafe along with the row of brick ruins that line the highway. The Western Star Lodge #2 is the oldest chartered lodge in California. The town has 3 historic cemeteries, Masonic, Catholic and the Union (Pioneer) Cemetery. The State park is located within walking distance.
Whiskeytown lake (3 miles) most trails are now open and the lake is having some great fishing days. Some of our guest that are avid gold miners have found nuggets in unusual areas. Areas that were inaccessible before the fire.
Don’t forget to pickup your $1 gold panning permit at Whiskeytown National Park.
The Little Red House
It is always our goal to provide guests with the rustic beauty and charm, while providing all the modern conveniences of home. Work from home! Adventure!
We have taken pride in our home, as it is the home in which we raised our two girls. Cleanliness is always our first priority along with comfort. An Ionizer (purifying) is used for 6-8 hours. All bedding is washed in hot water. Both bedrooms have luxurious beds, bedding and pillows for a perfect night’s sleep. The backyard gives you the solitude of a parklike setting. Our redwood outdoor shower is a real treat!
My husband and I enjoy hiking and biking locally with day hikes to surrounding areas.
Other areas to hike besides Whiskeytown are Castle Crags, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Lassen or even a day trip to the coast.
We also have a pear tree that bears fruit towards the end of October through the first 3 weeks of November. This pear tree was planted at our home in 1957. In 2015 the mother pear tree produced 2018 pounds. I have also grafted an additional 30 trees as of which 14 are planted at the Little Red House. Join us for fall and enjoy our pears.
We have a few inquiries regarding pets. We love animals however, our Fir floors are soft wood and took me a month to refinish from pet nail damage. Plus, since we advertise a pet free home to those with allergies. The backyard is also not dog proof.
Available for short term rentals, 3 days or 3 months.
If you have any questions about what to do in and around old Shasta feel free to ask me questions and I will assist you with organizing your adventures.

About the host
Hosted by Kaylynn Garland

Scott and I met while attending College. We moved away for 4 years and then returned to raise our family in Shasta. Scott was from the city and I was local to the area. Scott was an avid rock climber and backpacker. I was into backpacking, running and loved my pottery.
Through the years our lives had some twist and turns but always staying true to our appreciation of nature and the fun of adventure.
We continue to make the home and the yard something special. Our home is a labor of love you might say. We offer this home for traveling nurses, executive stays and also for family get aways! Our guests can enjoy the beauty of the area and relax in our cute and cozy home.
On the night of July 25, 2018 we watched from across Whiskeytown Lake as the Carr Fire was kicking up and within the hour we made the decision to get home and pack up as the fire was moving fast. We are beyond grateful to many agencies and especially to those firefighters that defended our homes and our street.
Life has returned to a new kind of normal. Scott and I will be still make time for hiking , gold panning, biking, kayaking, running and traveling to visit our girls and family.

Why they chose this property
Our home was built in the 1930's. No matter where we traveled or lived we wanted to make Northern California our home. Shasta and the Whiskeytown area was an area we both fell in love with. We were lucky to be offered this home in 1985. We raised our children in this home, then the day came to move to a larger home, while never wanting to sell the home we decided to rent the home for the next 23 years. The last few year we have put our heart and soul into "The Little Red House" remodeling and keeping the rustic charm of the home.
In August 2015 we had a "friends and family" open house and we were over whelmed by the response to our home from everyone who attended. Bottom line... everyone asked, why we were not downsizing and moving back into "The Little Red House"? Actually the thought has crossed our minds most everyday. However, we will be staying in our current home at this time. We are excited and look forward to having guests stay in the home.

What makes this property unique
Easy access to Redding or even a day trip to the coast, Mt. Shasta, Shasta Caverns and Mt. Lassen. The best part of where The Little Red House is located. It is a short 3 mile drive to Whiskeytown Lake. The home is located on a quiet street. Enjoy being out of the city where you can see the stars at night. Enjoy the wildlife, deer, squirrel, quail, doves, coyotes and foxes. At night you might be lucky enough to see a raccoon or even a ring-tailed cat.
