Vintage Beachfront Studio Apartment Right On Charley Young Beach

True Hawaiian style is based on informality and lacks pretense. And that's what you’ll find here, a humble home situated on a spectacular oceanfront parcel of land in a mixed demographic neighborhood. The studio apartment has its own private entrance in back of the main house on the 2nd floor. The building is a weathered wood-frame structure and the interior is nicely decorated with a glass-top dining table and 2 chairs, a relaxed seating area with a colorful area rug, couch, and a very comfortable Queen sized bed with an ensemble of crisp linens.
There is an ocean view and wood floors throughout, a fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom with bath and beach towels. Amenities include air-conditioning, WI-FI, flat screen T.V., beach chairs, umbrellas and cooler.

Perfectly accommodates 2 guests but can sleep up to 3 using the couch that folds out into a full bed.

GUEST ACCESS
The beach is a 30 second walk from the apartment. The spacious front lawn facing the ocean is yours to use anytime. Enjoy lounging in the hammock and gazing up at the coconut trees.
A BBQ grill is available in the backyard and can be accessed under the stairs.
ALL GAS TANKS AND GRILL SWITCHES MUST BE TURNED OFF AFTER EACH USE.
The area past the grill along the side of main house is off limits and a private area for owner use only.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Charley Young Beach Park is well known for it's gentle surf and perfect for swimming, snorkeling, stand up paddle, fishing, and there's miles of sandy beach to walk in either direction.

The studio faces the ocean and runs adjacent to the street below, next to the entrance of a popular beach park so factor in a bit of noise- people, bicycles, mopeds and vehicles. If beach park activity makes you happy, the location just doesn’t get any better than this. Most everything is within walking distance to the beach house- grocery stores, farmers markets, coffee shops, cafes, restaurants and fine dining, shopping, entertainment, and all the accoutrements you can think for a comfortable stay.

We go through great lengths to clean and keep the studio bug free. Still, you may see an occasional critter. If you stay with us, you can help by emptying your trash everyday and not leaving any food out.

Awesome Place

My wife and I stayed here for 2 weeks beginning of MayIt was perfect for what we were looking for. Proximity to Charlie Young Beach and the rest of Kihei's beaches as well as Mckenna State Park. Shops, restaurants and a pub all walking distance. Derrick the owner was very helpful and knowledeable with the area and historyWe will be back!

You couldn’t get a better location, right on the beach, beautiful! The place is vintage, which is good, only problem is the windows are very thin so hear the street beside and the neighbours. Would definitely stay there again.

Beautiful spot with being close to the beach , owners very pleasant but did not see them much. Only unsatisfied with the loud street noise and other tenant in building had loud motorcycle leaving at early hours.

Love this beachfront condo

Always great to stay here. I'm about 2 houses down from where my son lives and this condo is just perfect when I'm in Kihei. Close to everything and the little deck overlooking Charlie Young Beach is the best. This place is my first choice when looking for a place to stay in Kihei.

One aspect of this VRBO that I valued was the proximity not only to a great beach, but some tide pools and beach walks. We cooked our own meals a lot but there were several establishments walking distance away.

Maui location amazing

This property on Charley Young Beach was a minute to beach. Full kitchen with all you need- small lanai for use of two people which overlooked the water. The owners has use of beach equipment and use of outdoor tables in the back yard close to beach to eat on at anytime. Walking distance to ABC store and other shopping district with restaurants. I’ll consider returning next trip to Hawaii- no doubt.

Fabulous cozy place with a perfect location!

This place turned out to be just perfect for us, supplying us with exactly what was needed...beach towels, beach chairs and an umbrella. Quick walk to the beach and short walks to local stores and restaurants. My only regret...we stayed so busy throughout the week, we never did meet our hosts in person. I was looking forward to that. Anyway, a big thank you to them for providing our perfect vacation get away!

Spacious boho studio right on the beach!

For us this somewhat funky, vintage studio apartment epitomizes the real Maui beach bum experience. No giant, stuffy, overpriced resort hotels for us! While at the same time being extremely well located for a 2 minute walk to the beach, and 5 minute drive to central Kihei restaurants and shops, and only 10 minutes from lavish Wailea shops and restaurants and resorts. The vintage studio also offers some of the other "charms" of island life, including the local wild rooster clucking defiance every morning, the occasional loud motorcycle, or car stereo rumbling past, and of course a constant stream of beach goers toting all their towels and chairs. Ocean views and sea breezes through the many open windows in this old school apartment, and a little balcony,, make the experience complete. The hosts are friendly locals living on site who make the stay feel personal and authentic. Bananas off the tree anyone?

nice rental after dark a different vibe

This property was clean and comfortable, however while we understand the host have no control of what happens out our windows 4 out of 7 nights the police were outside (entrance of beach) with full lights flashing, then two of the nights there was a vagrant (?) loudly swearing up a storm, seeming talking/yelling at his self. We enjoyed our stay and the beach was lovely but after dark it felt sketchy.

Nice studio suite

We enjoyed 9 days at this location. It was exactly as advertised...in very close proximity to Charlie Young Beach, could see the ocean & sunsets from the suite, louvered windows brought in plenty of breeze to keep the suite cool but there is an ac unit if you desire, kitchen is well stocked, clean & no bugs, bed was comfortable and linens were clean and nice and the keyless entry was convenient. This home is located at a main access to the beach so as expected there was a fair amount of noise from people and vehicles at all hours of the day (including construction vehicles from a nearby site). We appreciated the use of the BBQ, beach chairs, umbrella, boogie board and cooler. We liked the vintage feel of the suite however the bathroom could use some updates - the shower is very small which we understand can't be changed but the shower head and sink faucet could be swapped out to improve the experience. We also experienced our shower to run out of hot water very quickly. I would consider staying in the unit on the other side of the house next time for a slightly quieter experience.

Misleading and disappointing

I have stayed at a lot of VRBO properties and this one was disappointing for what I was expecting according to their description and pictures. This is an ocean VIEW property which is different than ocean front. The view from this apartment is mostly the roof of the owners home. You can see the ocean but if you're hoping to potentially see whales or turtles from your room then bring your binoculars. It is also not air-conditioned in which I was perfectly fine with except that you can't leave the windows open at night due to the street noise that is directly below the window. It is indeed located DIRECTLY above/beside the very busy entrance to Charley Young Beach therefore it is very noisy from 5 a.m. (garbage truck beeping) to midnight. Even with the windows closed, there is a lot of street noise. Perhaps their adjacent apartment is quieter but view would not be any better. TINY deck for standing only. If you sat you wouldn't see ocean anyway. The owners view from where they live directly below would be amazing and that is where the pictures of the hammock are taken. You are free to use the hammock but I wasn't comfortable being in their front yard. It also would have been helpful to have beach chairs to take to beach. I didn't feel like they would want sand in the only 2 beach towels brought into the apartment. There are also very, very few amenities. No microwave. No paper towels. Only 1.5 rolls of toilet paper, 1/2 a small box of tissues. No kitchen washcloth. Only one dish towel and only one washcloth. There are also teeny, teeny, tiny bugs that you see occasionally running across the counter tops in kitchen and bathroom. I am not sure if that is common or just this particular vintage apartment. Many of these things can be improved except for the noise and view. I felt we would have been better off staying at a hotel. The bed was the best part. The sheets were very quality and bed was soft. Depending on what time of year you go, you aren't going to see the sunset either. You will have to walk to an opening in the trees. Also, couldn't keep counters clean because no washcloths and then used the one wash cloth that was meant for bathroom to wipe the counters. They were always dirty due to wind coming through windows even when shut because of their age and louver type). I love VRBO's but definitely NOT this one.

We had a great time here- the location is hard to beat, just steps from the beach and within easy walking distance to the main drag and many amenities. The host was great, very welcoming, and it was a great touch to offer beach chairs/umbrellas/coolers for us to use during our stay. The studio suite itself was well equipped, clean and suited our needs perfectly. As others have said, there’s a bit of street noise, but we used earplugs and had zero issues, slept great. Would definitely return and can highly recommend.

Why they chose this property

This is the original Charley Young Beach House.
The property has been in the family for generations and is situated at the entrance to one of the best beach parks on Maui, Charley Young Beach, which is named our grandfather, Charley Young, who came to Hawai'i in 1932 as a military reporter to cover the infamous Massie Trial. Settling on Maui, he purchased this oceanfront parcel and built a house for himself and his wife, Betty, and became a well known public figure and reporter for the Maui News and Honolulu Star-Bulletin in the 1940’s and 50’s. The house still stands today, relatively unchanged with all of it’s ‘Old Hawai’i’ charm, telling generations of family history.
