About this property

Beautiful 12/14 Bed former farmhouse overlooking Galway Bay and the Burren Hills

Bayfield is a spacious, lovingly restored farmhouse with its own three acres of land and gardens with the most beautiful views over Galway Bay and the hills of the Burren National Park. It is situated on one of the loveliest sections of the 'Wild Atlantic Way' and is a five minute walk to the local sandy beach that leads onto the Flaggy Shore.

See the maXXbayfield website for a feel of the place and more detailed information on the area.

Bayfield sleeps 12 adults and also has a 2 cots. If you are a larger group please ask about taking the extra annex next to the house which sleeps a further 2 people. It is also a perfect setting for smaller numbers and lovely even if there are just a couple of you staying.

Bayfield is a very chilled place to be on holiday and sits in its own three acres of lawns, wild gardens and farmed land which makes it incredibly peaceful. 5 minutes walk away is the Hamlet of New Quay with Linnanes, one of the best pubs in Ireland, serving superb sea food and fine Guinness. The house is furnished and used as a family holiday home so has everything you need and is much much more than than just a place to stay.

As well as being very spacious it is also cosy and you will feel at home very quickly whether there are two of you or a crowd. There are three en-suite king sized doubles, one twin-room and one double/bunk-room (with a double bed plus a bunk bed). A cot is also available on request. All of the rooms are spacious, comfortable and airy as is the rest of the house.

The generously sized kitchen is modern and well equipped and has a large breakfast table. Adjoining the kitchen is the spacious sitting room/dining room that sits 12-14 people in a very sociable area that is joined to the kitchen with a bar. The sitting room has a large wood burner and looks out onto the orchard, the Burren Hills and down to the waters of Galway Bay. There is a separate sitting room off the main one which has a large TV screen (you need to plug into this if you want to play anything - we have terrestrial TV). A third sitting area is upstairs and overlooks the fields in front of the house and Galway Bay - this only seats one and is great for quietly reading a book away from whatever else is going on in the rest of the house. The two main sitting rooms are well sound proofed from the main house so ideal for noisy kids in the morning or noisy adults in the evening.

Bayfield is in the heart of the Burren National Park. The surrounding area is outstandingly beautiful and while being a perfect place to relax and do nothing the area offers a huge amount of activities and things to see and do. The near by sandy beach leads onto the stunning Flaggy Shore with a three mile coastal road that is probably one of the best strolls one will ever do.

The location is very rural with cows and sheep grazing the fields surrounding the house. In addition to it being so rural New Quay also benefits from having the excellent seafood restaurant 'Linnane's (a five minute beautiful walk from the house) and the Russell Art Gallery which serves great Tea and Coffee (400 meters from the house). It’s a ten minute drive to the bustling coastal villages of Kinvara and Ballyvaughan. Also within easy reach is the lively coastal town of Galway famed for its Oyster Festival, the Galway Races and the great music played in its pubs. There are superb walks right from the front door of Bayfield which are great for any level of fitness ranging from the walk around the coast to hiking in the Burren hills.

County Clare is renowned for being one of the best places in Ireland for golf; and the courses of Lahinch, Gort and Drumoland are nearby. The surfing mecca of Lahinch is a short drive away as are the Cliffs of Moher which, along with the Aran Islands, are probably the most striking sites to see in Ireland. The Aran Islands are easy to get to from Bayfield by getting one of the regular ferries from Doolin which is about 35 minutes drive away. The Aran Islands are a must to visit.

Due to the makeup of the landscape the area is famed for its flora and fauna which blossom in early spring. For historians there is the local history of the ring forts and the Neolithic tombs as well as some beautiful castles and churches. If you have kids there is a great amount for them to do in the area from crabbing at the local pier to exploring the rock pools along the Flaggy shore. It is a great place!

Bayfield is surrounded by working farmland and Bayfield’s front field is grazed by beautiful Limousin cows (these can be taken out by by request if you prefer). There is a large lawned orchard at the back of the house which is a lovely place to be on a sunny day with a very comfortable garden room leading onto it. (Bring a hammock if you have one as there are two trees ideal for hanging it in between). The BBQ overlooks the fields and trees down to the water and there is an outside terrace at the end of the garden with 360 views of the Burren.

Cars are easy to hire from the airports (Shannon being the closest). If you need group transport when at the house 'Burren Coaches' are nearby and can accommodate any size of group. Feel free to ask for any info and also take a look at the Maxxbayfield website which has lots of info about the house and the area.

About the host

I live with my wife Beatrice and our two daughters in London and split our holiday time between staying in Bayfield and going over to Rome where Beatrice is from. For us these are the two of the most Beautiful places in the world!

Bayfield has been in the family for generations and I have been coming over with my parents, brothers and sisters since I was a child and have been playing in the fields around Bayfield and swimming from the Flaggy Shore since I can remember.

When my mother took the house over from my Great Uncle Edward it was falling into disrepair and had cows using it as a shelter. The thatched roof had fallen in and all the doors and windows had rotted away. My mother with help from the rest of the family restored and extended the house to make it what it is now and we love it.

We love the walks, the pubs, the food, the people and the weather whatever the season throws at us. As well as summer we often spend Christmas and New Year in Ireland and find it as lovely then as it is in the summer. On Christmas Day about 100 people from the area go for a morning swim and I have joined them for the last three years and plan to do many more.

I am a keen sailor and have sailed and done many regattas on Galway Bay and from other coastal towns along the Wild Atlantic Way. Galway Bay in particular is one of the most beautiful places I have ever sailed - especially when taking part in the Galway to Aran Islands Race.

Have a great time if you are staying at Bayfield. Read the tips on the "Read if staying" page on the maxxbayfield website, and be sure to let us know if you had a good time.

Many thanks for choosing to stay!

Max, Beatrice, Aurelia and Pancia

Why they chose this property

Bayfield was built by our Great Great Grandfather over a hundred and fifty years ago and has been in the family ever since. Originally a farmhouse it has now been lovingly and beautifully restored and we are lucky enough to be able to use it as a holiday home and offer it to others to enjoy as well.
Our Great Uncle Edward Hynes, the renowned artist who drew for several American and European magazines lived at the house and what is now the main sitting room was his studio for many years. You will see many copies of his pictures and cartoons around the house.
We grew up visiting Bayfield for holidays and now think of it as part of the family. We love the walking, the pubs, the views and the people on the West Coast and come back to visit whenever we can.

What makes this property unique

The house, the rooms and the gardens are all extremely spacious. Multiple sitting areas each with its own charm means that even with a full house there is plenty of space. Something that people really appreciate about Bayfield is that the main living/sitting room is in an adjoining building connected by a small hallway which means that adults can stay up later without waking sleeping children. (Likewise in the morning children can play in the living room if they wake up early!).
The house is surrounded by beautiful fields with grazing horses, cows and sheep. Kids love it but I think adults appreciate it even more.
The sea is so close that you can walk down to the beach with your cup of coffee and it will still be warm when you get there. We often do this!
No matter what the weather it is a lovely place to be. Have a look at www.maxxbayfield.com which has more pictures and more information.
