Beach Cottage a short walk from the waves!

Completed in 2019 and only recently shared as a rental, this beach cottage is the perfect family getaway! It's located at milepost 22.5 in the 4x4 area of Carova Beach (4x4 VEHICLE IS REQUIRED) just a couple minute walk from the beach.
The house has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and can sleep a maximum of 7 people but is best suited for 5 or less. There is a queen bed in the master bedroom and bunk beds with a trundle in the other bedroom. The couch in the living room can convert to a queen bed if you need extra space. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need and has seating for 4 people around the island. A full bathroom with sliding barn door completes the main level of the home.
Outside on the large covered deck is a swing and lounge area on one side with a table and charcoal grill on the other. On the ground level there is an outdoor shower and a comfy hammock to relax in. There is a storage room with an additional half bathroom and washer and dryer. To complete the outside and guaranteed to be a hit with the kids is a tree house, swing, and a zip line to stay busy for hours when you're not at the beach!

There is no internet, cable, or phone at the house. Antenna tv is included as well as a blueray player and assortment of movies, games, and puzzles. Shellnanigans is best suited for families with young children.

***The water issues have been fixed! A new Kinetico system was just installed and it has cleared up the water. There is still a UV light for added safety so the water is clear, safe, and drinkable.***

Beautiful beach cottage.

We loved the cottage, so close to the beach and easy to make multiple trips. One day we went 3x, at sunrise, after lunch and at sunset. The sunrise walk was spectacular, mid day we put our beach chairs in the water and after the heat of the day the wild horses come out. Experiencing driving my truck on the 4x4 beach for this 70yr old woman is something I will always remember. Bring plenty of bottled water for drinking, as the sulfur odor/color is fine for bathing and cooking/making coffee, but I preferred to drink bottled.

Loved!

The beach house is located a short walk off the beach in a semi secluded area with trees on left aide and 2 other homes on roght side of house and trees behind. The tree house and zip line were great. The house was clean. It does need some dishes gone through and added and or changed. The beds were firm but comfortable. The water did smell but that is to be expected with well water. All in all the house was great with an occassional horse sighting near by.

Cute cottage by the ocean

House is small but a family of 4 fits comfortably . Loved being able to load my beach gear in the truck and drive to the beach. House was nestled in the trees on a quiet road but you could still hear the ocean from the deck! Never saw horses right at the house but there was evidence they had been there! Host was very easy to reach with any questions you may have. Would stay here again if we come back to Corolla!

Great Location

We loved being able to drive directly onto the beach. This house comes with everything you need. There are even beach chairs and umbrellas. The house was cute and perfect for my husband and I on our anniversary trip. We could have even brought the kids, they would have loved the tree house and zip line. We saw horses every day!

Obx they way you should experience it!

Loved the location of the property. Well equipped, had everything we needed. Kiddo loved the Zipline and tree fort. Ac kept the place cold and comfortable. Being close to beach was awesome. New water system makes the water issues of past reviews a non issue now. Only negatives I have is outside was a bit cluttered with various wood and scraps from projects, and the neighbor house is a bit of an eye sore but the latter one is hard for this owner to control. Would definitely rent again or recommend to friends and family.

Overall nice stay in OBX

This beach home is in an awesome location, that is probably the best feature and hence why most people are headed to the OBX 4x4 anyways! Make sure you come with a good 4x4 vehicle, this will make or break your trip. The home is walking distance to the beach, but we enjoyed driving over daily, and close enough to hear the waves on the porch swing every morning. It is small, but cute, and does come with all the amenities needed for a nice budget friendly vacation. We saw horses almost daily walk by the home, which was fun to experience. We did have some cleanliness concerns, but the owner is very responsive and I do think he did his best to rectify something that was not entirely in his control, we didn’t let this ruin our trip in anyway, but was an issue. Also, some things are in need of minor repair and the property overall could use some TLC, especially outside, but nothing terrible. There is definitely more positive to this home than negative. I would recommend this VRBO as a great budget friendly option for small families, especially with young children.

What a great little house for a family vacation!

We really enjoyed our stay! The kids loved the little tree house with the zip line. I really enjoyed sitting in the hammock and watching them zip past me! Lots of great giggles to be had. The porch was a great place to relax and enjoy the visiting horses. House was well stocked and comfortable. There is no internet or cable but if you are tech savvy you can hot spot off your phone and stream your subscription services off the smart TV. The walk to the beach was short and the drive even shorter! Lots of wildlife in the area. Deer, lizards and of course the horses. If you wake up early for the sunrise the walk will likely reward you with all kinds of OBX creatures. If you are looking for a no frills, all beach vacation with your family you can’t go wrong with this great little house. Be sure to bring all you need for your stay as the drive to Corolla is an easy 30-40 min drive one way. Stock up on your beverages, food, sun block, and bug spray(mosquitos come out at night and feast if your not prepared!) We really look forward to coming back next summer. The owner was more then accommodating with our special request and was quick to respond with any questions we had. Thank you “Shellnanagins” for a great week on the 4x4 beach.

Great location, but a home we will not stay in again

We are a family of four (2 small children) and avid travelers though vacation rentals. This is a new property, and would need some things addressed before anyone else should stay. Let me preface with we do not take leaving a negative review lightly, but in this case feel it is necessary. We were recommended not to drink the water by the owner after booking, to bring bottled water and expect an occasional tea like tint. In reality it was dark enough to stain clothes and make even showering unpleasant. In our opinion homes without suitable drinking water should not be permitted on VRBO. The owner did state he was going to try to fix the water while we were there but never confirmed if anything was done and the quality never improved. The home also was pretty obviously not professionally cleaned between stays as advertised. There were stained linens we are not confident were washed, dirty dishes in the cabinets, used dental floss in the bathroom, and a dirty shirt and pacifier behind the pillows of the master bed among other cleanliness issues. We spent our first hour cleaning and making child safe as well as our last few as whomever stays is asked to fully launder (not just start wash) and fold linens for the next guest. So you are trusting the previous guest on your linens, not a paid cleaning service, yet are charged a cleaning fee? The owners toiletries (razors, toothbrushes, etc) were also in the bathroom cabinet and the outdoor shower full of half used soaps and shampoos. It did not feel vacation rental ready and if this was not our only chance to get away and money non refundable at that point, we would have left.

Craig I'm sorry you weren't happy with your stay, but wish I would have known some of the concerns right away so I could fix them. When I checked to make sure you got there the first night, you mentioned the water but said the house was charming. I fully understand the water portion, but also had a local water company try and address it while you were there. The wells in Carova are very shallow causing a lot of tanins in the water. I have multiple filters to clean that up as best as possible but sometimes it still has that tea like appearance. There is also a UV light on the water so it is completely safe. The home is professionally cleaned between renters and I split this cost between myself and the cleaning fee. I have addressed your concerns with them and would have had them come back out while you were there but didn't hear about the concerns until your check out day. We are trying to keep this home affordable for families to get to the beach and because of that chose to do our linens the way we did. You are welcome to bring your own linens too. There are companies that will manage linens but that is an extra cost that would increase the rental rate. Unfortunately doing it this way is on an honor policy and hopefully all renters will do their part before checking out. I do appreciate the feedback and will use it to make sure I can provide the best possible vacation experience for our future guests.

If you’re thinking of booking…..don’t.

When we first arrived outside, we noticed overflowing trash left in the cans. No biggie. When we actually started looking at the house inside, we noticed how filthy it was. Dirty dishes, moldy coffee pot on the counter, large boogers wiped on multiple walls, what looked to be dried vomit on the bathroom door & multiple stains on the mattress protectors & mattresses. The kids wanted to go to the beach so we made our way & I messaged the owner to let him know I was upset. He asked for pictures so my husband walked back to the home & snapped some pictures¬iced the trash was removed.The owner then told me it was just peeled paint & water stains. The trash was removed so our problems were “fixed”. I went back to the home & started to take more pictures to show him that the problems weren’t fixed. The bunk room had a trundle bed & when I pulled it out, something flew off of it under the bunk beds. I pulled the trundle completely out to take see & it was DISGUSTING. Food, trash, etc. We brought our own bedding but it was so bad I didn’t feel comfortable AT ALL sleeping there. I sent him the second batch of pictures including a second moldy coffee pot that was taken out from under the cabinet. He stopped responding at that point. We had to book a hotel for the night&a completely different rental for our week at the beach. He then messaged me telling me that we “turned the place upside down”. We put EVERYTHING back except the bedding(which we left in a hamper) & the coffee pot.

This is the hardest part about renting... This home is professionally cleaned between each renter and I take any complaint very seriously. I responded within 4 minutes of their message and told them I'd have my cleaners come right back out to address any of their concerns. My cleaner was back out within an hour of them messaging me and these renters were gone. My cleaner informed me they had moved all the furniture around pulling it away from the walls. The pictures they sent complaining of the cleanliness were from behind beds and the couch. I came down myself to check the conditions first hand to make sure I was getting accurate information. Sadly, it was as my cleaner had described. They left the house with furniture moved around, the AC at 62, and a canceled payment. This is our family home that we enjoy and choose to share with other people. This one is a gut punch, and unfortunately the sad side of renting. Please check my other reviews and I assure you this will be one of your families favorite vacations!

Toute une expérience, vraiment heureux d'y être allé.

Le propriétaire est une perle. Superbe communication et une personne courtoise. La propriété est très bien. C'est neuf! Nous avons été accueillis par un troupeau de chevaux sauvages. L'équipement du chalet est très bien. Il faut bien lire que c'est dans la section 4x4 de la plage. En suivant les recommandations, mon CRV, quoique un peu bas pour le chemin, a fait le travail avec son AWD. Naturellement, roues 19psi, suivre les traces, ne pas arrêter inutilement et j'ajoute de désactiver la fonction anti-patinage de la voiture est nécessaire. Stationner directement sur la plage, c'est merveilleux. Dans notre séjour, il ventait beaucoup et il y avait de fortes vagues. La propreté du chalet semble beaucoup dépendre du locataire précédent. Par exemple, beaucoup de vaisselle et d'ustensiles étaient sales à notre arrivée. On s'entend qu'avec le lave-vaisselle fourni, c'est rapidement nettoyé. L'eau du robinet est de la couleur du sable. Ce qui fait que l'évier et la baignoire ont des taches d'eau. Il faut prévoir s'apporter de l'eau pour boire. Sur place, il y a un distributeur d'eau et dans notre séjour, nous avions un réservoir plein. Nous avons beaucoup aimé. Rarement après un voyage je me dis que je serais resté plus longtemps, mais cette fois, oui, j'aurais pris quelques jours de plus. Merci à vous de nous avoir accueillis.

Unforgettable Getaway

This ended up becoming my family’s favorite vacation to date. The home is lovely, charming and peaceful. The location strikes a balance between adventure and relaxation. The area you’re staying at is a blank canvas with a five minute walk to a beach that feels like your own at times. It was perfect for me, my husband, our son, and our dog. Though we only knew it a week, the memories we made will last a lifetime!

Budget friendly beach bungalow

My family of 4 had the best time on the 4x4 beach! This adorable beach bungalow is perfect for a family of 4. We have two small children (7 and 5), and they played in the tree fort and zip line for hours! They enjoyed sleeping on the bunk beds and pull out sofa! The home does not have wifi or cable, but we did watch movies at night. My husband and I enjoyed the hammock, and the quiet and cozy front porch. Great spot to play cards and games. The house was not super clean when we arrived, so we did do a quick cleaning before moving our stuff in. We were a little taken back by the water quality, but the homeowner assured us it was safe to use! We did wash dishes and laundry and all was fine. Communication with the home owner was super easy and he was very accommodating! We hope to be back next year and would totally rent here again!
