Freckled Dog Fishing Cottage
Cozy Fishing Cottage, nestled in the heart of Cape Hatteras National Seashore
We’ve fallen in love with this cozy cottage and we think you will too. Conveniently located in Avon Village in the middle of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, it offers easy day trips to Oregon Inlet or Hatteras Village for deep sea fishing excursions or sightseeing trips to Cape Point, Hatteras Light or Ocracoke.
However, once you discover all that Avon has to offer, you might never want to leave! We are a short drive (5 minutes) away from public access to the National Seashore-discover and enjoy the beauty and the wildness of the Outer Banks. Shelling, fishing, swimming and surfing are minutes away. If kiteboarding and windsurfing interest you, the Freckled Dog is a 10 minute drive to Canadian Hole, famous for wind sports, on the sound side.
Having a canal in our backyard provides easy access for your kayak or paddle-board or just enjoying a quiet view of the water from our all-season porch and our upper and lower decks. We are a short walk away from Avon Harbor, where you can take a fishing charter or family fun charter (Tightlinez) on the sound. The harbor is also a great spot for viewing sunsets or grabbing some oysters from Kinnakeet Oyster Company.
Got bikes-bring them! The flatness of the National Seashore provides easy bike rides for everyone. Ride around the village of Avon and grab some ice cream. Or take a ride to the Avon Pier and check out what folks are catching. If longer rides interest you, ride all the way down to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and explore the grounds there.
Whether you spend your day playing in the surf and sand or just relaxing in the sun, you’ll enjoy quiet evenings at the Freckled Dog, either on the porch with beautiful night views of the canal or tucked up inside, with the sounds of the ocean off in the distance.
You’ll want to get a good night’s sleep in one of our four comfy beds, so you’ll wake up in time to catch the sunrise over the ocean with your morning coffee, tea or juice and begin the fun all over again!

A few things to note:
Renters can plan to bring their own linens and towels (2 queen beds and 2 twin beds) or choose to rent them from Hatteras Island Helping Hands (https://hatterashelpinghands.com/linen-towel-order/). Kitchen towels, sponges and hot pads are provided.

Property is in a nice quiet neighborhood and the location on a canal is amazing. The kitchen has everything you need to cook or bake anything. The host is very responsive and the check in was easy and efficient.

Amazing Location and Exceptionally Clean

My family stayed in the Freckled Dog for a few days and can't compliment this location enough. The house was exceptionally clean and well-stocked. The screened in porched overlooking the canal was beautiful, and the room sizes were perfect. In addition, communication with the host was very timely and she answered any questions we had. We will be back!

Amazing Beach House away from Home!

This beach house/cottage was the perfect home away from home. It's only minutes away from Avon Pier and lots of Seafood Restaurants nearby. Also, it has access to water for sporting activities like kayaking and paddle boarding. Additionally, the property owner, Michelle, was always very responsive to all my questions. Would definitely stay again in the future.

Perfect place and close to everything!

Our family of 5 enjoyed this home so much. There was plenty of room and the beds were comfortable. We really enjoyed the outdoor areas of the house. It was a quick drive to the beach and close to many stores and restaurants. The house was stocked with all of the necessities. We just had to go to the store for food and drinks. We will definitely be back here. Highly recommend!

Great time at the cottage!

This property is wonderful for a family that wants a quiet vacation with access to beaches and amenities in Avon/Buxton/Hatteras Island area. The house is in a quiet residential area, but close enough to Rte 12. All the amenities were as described and we ended making use of most of them. Check in process was painless and the host was quick with answers for the few issues we encountered. Would definitely stay again if available!

Amazing stay at the Freckled Dog

We enjoyed our stay at the Freckled Dog so much! There were so many cute touches with the place like making your own ornament, to games, to a bunch of welcome items upon arrival. The cottage was clean, and everything looked exactly like it did in the pictures. Michelle was a great host and so easy to connect with! I would definitely stay here again.

Great stay in Avon

We booked a 9-day stay in Avon at the Freckled Dog and were so pleased with our choice. The house is located within easy reach of many fun activities we like to do while in the Outer Banks. The house is very cute and clean and was one of the most well-stocked rental homes we have ever seen. Our host provided so many nice amenities that made us feel very welcome, from toiletries to complimentary treats for our dog to cute little keepsakes to take home as mementos of a great beach trip. The kitchen was extremely well-provisioned for any cooking need and the outdoor shower was the best end of a day in the water. The neighborhood is extremely quiet and the neighbors we met were all extremely friendly. Overall, it was a great stay and made our time in the Outer Banks that much more enjoyable.

Our family has always loved vacationing on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore-it offers something for everyone. We have family in Avon and have found this place truly magical and a little on the wild side (an untamed beach town). When this property became available, we knew we wanted it as a retreat for ourselves, but we also wanted to share it with others! We think we've created a comfortable home for everyone looking for some special time at the beach. Our hope is that the Freckled Dog feels as much like home to you as it does to us and that you enjoy the beauty, serenity and excitement of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore during your stay here.
