À propos de cet hébergement

The Loon Lodge

Nestled in the Marl Bay on Douglas Lake, the Loon Lodge is located near one of four Loon nests monitored by the University of Michigan Biological Station.

17 miles of undeveloped shoreline maintained by U of M on the 3,700 acre lake helps to create a peaceful place for wildlife and human visitors to rest.

Spend the day exploring the lake by kayak, canoe, or paddle board. Enjoy a good book by the lake or take a half mile walk to Bessey Nature Preserve where Lancaster Creek feeds into Douglas Lake.

By night, catch the Northern Lights or the Milky Way Galaxy from the dock while a fire crackles on the shore.

The Loon Lodge is a cozy 1940’s whole log cabin that has been updated & renovated while honoring it’s historical character.

There are two bedrooms (pony walls) each featuring a queen bed. There is also a sleeping loft with a full and twin bed, while a futon is available in the living room for extra sleeping.

A full kitchen, bathroom and living room finish the space, plus an enclosed porch on the lakeside for sipping your morning coffee.

The cabin is best for a couple or single family with kids. Please note that this property does not have Wi-Fi but does have excellent cell service for a hot spot.

Lovely!

This place was perfect for our travels. It did fit 6 of us for sleep and having breakfast and dinner at the big kitchen table! We did enjoy our stay here. Much of our time was spent outside of the house. Kayaks were available for us to explore the lake as much as we could. Mackinaw city is a short drive. Lovely, thankyou.

Beautiful location, very cute and comfortable cabin

The location is about 25 minutes from Mackinaw City or Cheboygan (Walmart, groceries). Douglas lake is gorgeous, and feels remote, peaceful, secluded, quiet. However, we were not far from all of the area attractions. The dock is aging, and a bit flimsy in parts. The cabin is adorable, comfortable and cutely decorated. The only complaint is that the shower did not drain properly (slightly slanted ) causing yuck to collect in one corner. Towels are provided which is nice, but with a family of 5, could have used an extra hand towel during the week to swap out. Note that there is no laundry facility on site. Also, note that the bedroom walls are more like partitions, so there really wasn’t privacy in terms of noise. We loved the location and overall the cabin was great. I would absolutely recommend this property.

Disappointed

There were mouse droppings on and under the bed sheets. Used Q tips and used bandaids scattered in loft. The loft area was more of a crawl space. Holes in the screens. The screen door that faces the lake did not fit flush to the stoop. The gap was large enough for a mouse or snake to easily fit through. Bathroom faucet was not fastened properly to sink. Bathroom floor was constantly wet. We did see a mouse on the counter top one morning crawling over our boxes of food. Property was not as neatly kept as in the photo. The driveway was all sand that was easily tracked into the cabin. The property is not for 8 people more like 5-6. With water front property comes spiders and snakes, but on the up-side, we did hear Loons at about 12:30 am. It property did not appear to be cleaned since last fall.

Hi Krystal, Sad to hear you did not enjoy your stay. We are always happy to hear feedback on any issues needing to be addressed. We spent a lot of time up there this spring but never had any issues with mice. That said, it is a historic seasonal cabin in the woods, and critters like chipmunks, mice, and spiders can, at times, find their way in. Thanks for pointing out the loose faucet handle, we will fix it immediately. As far as water on the bathroom floor, when it's very hot and humid like it was during your stay, condensation can form on the back of the toilet and drip onto the floor. Unfortunately, ambient air temperature and humidity are things outside the realm of our control. Similarly, the driveway is sandy, since the soil in Northern Michigan around lakes tends to be primarily sand. We cleaned the cabin the morning of your arrival and put new sheets (brand new, bought that day in Cheboygan) onto the beds, so I don't think there could have been mouse droppings in the bed. If you had read the listing, we do specify that while the cabin can sleep up to 8 people, it is "best suited for a couple or single family." The loft is listed as a "children's loft" in the listing for that reason. Again, we are sorry that our cabin did not meet your expectations. We did attempt to reach out several times to check in with you regarding your stay, but got no response from you. We would have happily addressed any issues or concerns you had during your stay. Thanks!

The Loon Lodge is a place of retreat and adventure for our family. We run our family’s farm full-time in Mid-Michigan but our hearts live in the serene woods of Northern Michigan and the epic beauty of the Great Lakes. We are so grateful to share this gift with you!

When we first saw this cabin, we fell in love with its rustic and historic charm. The whole log walls and rafters transport you to a time when Northern Michigan's lakes were wild and undeveloped, and cabins like these were carved out and constructed of the very woods around them.

That's what makes this place so special to us! We love the rustic logs and simplicity of a time-old cabin, but more importantly - we love that with just a short drive this cabin allows us to strip away the incessant noise of day-to-day life and focus on spending quality time together as a family.

We only get 18 summers with our kids being "kids," what better way to make memories than around a campfire on a lake, enjoying the long days of Northern Michigan Summer.

Voici pourquoi l’hôte a choisi cet hébergement

Douglas Lake is a very quiet lake. With the University of Michigan owning over half of the shoreline, there is very little development compared to other lakes in the area - meaning there is plenty of wildlife.

We use our cabin as a getaway to escape the noise of daily life and enjoy the pristine nature that Douglas Lake has to offer. We regularly see and hear loons, as there is typically more loons on the lake than boats. Eagles also frequent our area of the lake as well as blue herons and beavers that swim out of the creek feeding Marl Bay. While we haven't seen a Black Bear up there yet, we have found bear tracks in the sand along the east shore of the lake.

Douglas Lake offers a great escape to enjoy the peace and tranquility of Northern Michigan nature, while still being just a 15 mile drive to the Straits of Mackinac.

Voici ce qui rend cet hébergement unique

We have done our best to honor this cabin's past by leaving as much of its original woodwork and character as it is. While so many of these small lakeside cabins are being torn down to make way for bigger, fancier lakefront properties, our dream is to preserve this little piece of Michigan's historic roots, and share our little hideaway with other like-minded families.
