Seeing a black bear can certainly be an exciting—and sometimes unexpected—part of visiting the Great Smoky Mountains. While bear sightings are not uncommon in the area, we understand that having one visit so close can bring out the protective instincts, especially when traveling with children and pets. We always encourage guests to remain wildlife-aware, keep a safe distance, and avoid leaving food or scented items outdoors. Fortunately, black bears are typically interested in easy food sources rather than people, but we encourage all guests to be aware of their surroundings and to give bears the right of way. Most often, they are simply passing through and do not linger for long. Thank you again for your feedback. We certainly understand wildlife encounters are not everyone's favorite part of the mountain experience. Bear activity tends to be lower during the late fall and winter months, making those seasons a great option for guests who would like to enjoy the beauty of the mountains with a reduced chance of wildlife encounters.
