Welcome to Harper House, a beautifully designed minimalist semi-oceanfront vacation home on the 4x4 beaches of Carova Beach, Northern Outer Banks, North Carolina. This 3-bedroom, 1,881 sq ft beach house sleeps 6 and sits on a high lot in the North Swan area with no home directly between it and the ocean — giving you unobstructed Atlantic views, the sounds of crashing surf, and ocean breezes from every level. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required; the property sits approximately 7 miles up the 4x4 beach. Three-night minimum stays available in spring and fall.
Bedrooms & Sleeping Arrangements
Three bedrooms sleep 6 guests across two levels. The second level features a queen master bedroom with private bath and large private deck, plus two additional bedrooms sharing a hallway bath — one queen and one twin room with two twin beds. Keyless entry on level one makes arrival effortless.
Ocean Views & Outdoor Living
The top level reverse floor plan places the main living area where the views shine brightest. A wide open kitchen with island seating, leather sofas, and a smart TV connected to satellite anchor the space, alongside a large dining room table seating 6. Expansive wraparound decks offer a sunny south-facing exposure and a covered oceanside porch for shaded relaxation. A teak outdoor dining table lets you dine al fresco to the sound of the surf. With no homes between Harper House and the ocean, dolphins, pelicans, shorebirds, and the occasional wild horse or fox are regular visitors to the view.

We loved the location and will definitely visit again! Host was responsive when we had a couple questions and everything was overall perfect!! Views could not be better and we had horses around the house several times a day. Loved that we could leave our shoes at home and walk to the beach through the sand for sunset or sunrise. The beach is right there but you don't have to go to the beach to get the feel of it since the views from the house are spectacular! But, it's a very easy walk for when you want to get your feet wet. The house is beautiful and laid out well. The upper floor is one large room that includes the kitchen, dining room, and living room (plus a half bath). It is on the second row but the lot in front of it is currently open so you get beautiful ocean views. And it is a short walk (or drive) to the beach. However, the beautiful porches hardly get used because the only furniture is cheap, uncomfortable plastic chairs and the roof provides no shelter from rain.The open areas of the floor were swept but it was filthy under the dining room table, end tables, and couches. One bathroom had no hand soap and another had 6 squares of TP left on the roll. The coffee maker uses cone filters, not basket style as listed in the description. Most of the dishes were disgustingly dirty in the cabinets and had to be washed before they could be used. When they say there are no pantry items, they mean it - there were four pepper shakers and an empty salt shaker. You have to buy everything else. I've stayed in many vacation rentals and never seen one so devoid of basics.More significantly, the water is mostly undrinkable. The quality of this house's water varies regularly - at its best it was very minerally and smelled of sulphur, but usually was so salty that it was like getting a glass directly from the ocean. Bring lots of drinking water - you're going to need it.

Thank you for the 4-star review! We are so glad you loved the home's layout, the short trip to the beach, and those fantastic ocean views. We sincerely apologize for the cleaning oversights under the furniture and the condition of the dishes; we will definitely review this with our housekeeping team. Regarding the supplies, our remote location means we strictly limit provisions to a small starter supply of paper products and do not provide any pantry items. Since the home relies on a well system, the water can occasionally have a mineral or sulfur quality despite our reverse osmosis filtration system, which is very common on the 4x4 beach. If you are using water while the system is regenerating, it will allow you to pull in the water it is using to clean the filtration tank. Thank you for catching the coffee filter change—we will update our listing details immediately! We also appreciate your feedback on the exterior furniture and will share it with the owners.

Awesome house in an equally awesome setting. There are full ocean views from the upper deck and you can hear the waves crashing with the windows open. The 4x4 only beach was a great experience for the whole family. You pull up on the beach and it is like your own private area. The wild horses walked through the yard multiple days. Would definitely recommend!

Very nice home, very good deal considering pricing versus view. Newer home, updated, good lay out, covered parking, interior stairs, big decks. Would not hesitate to rent Harper House again.

All the little nice things like a dry entrance, and huge decks on level two and three make Harper House a good choice even if it rains. You're right, those views are fantastic!! I agree the ATV would be nice BUT unless you are an owner you cannot bring an ATV. The exception is if it is registered, licensed and insured for road travel. I guess you'll just have to buy a house here ;-) THANKS and hope you will come again.

Beautiful house!

This house was prefect for us! We got the gorgeous view and the beach was just steps away. House had fast internet and that was a bonus since I had to take a work call. It was clean and neat and the hosts were a delight! Thank you and we will see you next year!

We're so glad you found Harper House a good fit for your family. This home has quite a little following already, as it is just the right size for a small family or even one couple. The views from the decks, the covered porches, the fantastic kitchen.. all add up to a nice spot for a vacation. Watching a storm roll in from the living room is an experience that is hard to beat. Nothing but WINDOWS, but covered by the porch roof. You can actually sit outside during a storm and be one with the nature, listening to the rain, the waves and the wind. What a cool place. So glad you all enjoyed your stay.

We had the best week ever at the Harper House. This place was perfect for us and it was immaculate. It had everything we needed and more (except for those dang front porch rockers lol...inside joke). Easy access to the ocean and wild horses everywhere. I wish I could leave a bunch of our pics. Laura at Carova Cottages was awesome. Can't wait to come back!!

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Wonderful cottage close to beach with nice view. Cottage feels brand new with beautiful kitchen, comfy beds, and 2 wrap around decks. Kitchen has everything you need, and we saw horses near the cottage every morning, as well as on the beach on a few occasions.
