Amazing location across the street from the best snorkel beach on the Big Island! The unit is very comfortable. King bed & AC in the primary room. Secondary room is cozy, also AC. Lots of fun extras available, boogie boards, umbrella. All the fun you need for beach fun! The unit was clean & fresh. Balcony is perfect, lush foliage surrounds it. Nice breezes, lovely for a meal. Great communication from the host & local contact available. Will definitely stay there again!

The pool was clean and great for a quick dip, especially after a soak in the hot tub. The hot tub temperature was perfect and all the jets in order. The Makolea is far enough away from the chain stores (walmart, costco...) traffic, but close enough to them for a shopping trip whenever something is needed. We would not hesitate to stay here again and hope to do so soon.

A perfect location for snorkelers; you can easily walk to one of the best snorkeling sites on the island. A great pool and hot tub that were never busy and just outside your door. Very comfortable place to stay, and the owners did a great job of outfitting the condo with everything you need, from kitchen tools to beach accessories. Dinner on the balcony amongst the green trees was special too.

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Our trip to the big island included some time near Hilo and the second half in Kona where we stayed at Makolea 23. Location first off was why we initially picked this and it was perfect. The walk to Kahalu’u beach was maybe 2 minutes and that alone made this part of the trip great. The apartment was clean, comfortable and quiet despite being so close to things. Definitely a do again next time we’re here. One thing but more of a Big island thing is make sure to keep your kitchen very clean. Lotsa tiny bugs if even a crumb is left somewhere. We even had some find their way into the dishwasher after not rinsing a plate good enough.

Spacious, safe, everything we needed

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We stayed at Makolea 23 for almost 2 weeks in August 2026. We had a great time. The rental was spacious, comfortable, had everything we needed and more! The oven worked great. The ceiling lights in the rooms worked once I figured out to use the fan remote instead of the wall switches. We found beds very comfortable, showers functional, and kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, a water filter, toaster, etc. We snorkeled at the local park many times and saw amazing fish, turtles and even an octopus. It's minutes away from a great grocery store and a bookstore with souvenirs and postcards, next to manta rays tours, close to 2-strp snorkeling beach. We traveled to the volcano national Park one day. The best shaved ice cream - Ninja Shaved Ice is only 15 min south. There is not much to do around the condo in the evening once it got dark. You'd have to drive for night time entertainment or restaurants. The maintenance was needed for a toilet and a door lock - the property management response was great and wasn't a big issue. We hope to be back!

Just what we needed

Reviewer Comments: This condo checked all the boxes: GREAT location, just a very short walk to one of the best snorkeling beaches on the Kona Coast, and a short drive down into the main shopping area in Kona. It was clean, safe, well stocked. We were there during the Tsunami Warning and Craig was good at keeping in contact with us through that. Water pressure was good (I've come to appreciate that). Also, kitchen was stocked with plenty of glasses and measuring cups, and all those things that some rental condos don't bother to include. A/C were units in each bedroom and worked well in those rooms (though they were loud -only complaint). I would definitely come back!

Great location, comfortable place & uneven communication

Rating Details: The property manager was somewhat unhelpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Property is clean, somewhat dated but fair for the cost and located near a top beach and in a nice quiet neighborhood. Communication was uneven - initially responsive, then stopped for no apparent reason. The most troubling thing: I was given 2 different door codes, which I tried to clarify a few hours before evening arrival but got no answer and neither code worked. After calling/texting the emergency contact and any email/phone # I had, someone answered the reservation line. Took over an hour to get the correct code, which was very stressful. The property contact offered 1 night credit for giving the wrong door code but then never provided it even after a few emails/texts. Besides that, the place was comfortable and very pleasant and the contact responded to issues during my stay.

Host was very responsive and helpful. Although the property was adequate, it is tired and in need of an overhaul. Kitchen is dark (missing ceiling light fixture), carpet should have been replaced ages ago, cabinets and counter tops are rough with missing tile, 5 remotes for the tv meant we had to call for help. The unit has beach gear (like chairs, umbrellas and boogie board) but some were broken and in need of attention. The spa was always dirty, lots of debris and sand that wasn’t removed by the pool service. We enjoyed our time despite having higher expectations of the property.
