Walk cross-country in around 20 minutes through fields and over a small footbridge to reach Barga’s lively centre, where you’ll find excellent restaurants, cosy bars, gelaterias, artisan shops, live music and summer markets under the stars. A local osteria is even closer along the road.

Set in the heart of the Garfagnana valley, this is an ideal base for scenic walks, relaxing days by the pool, and exploring Tuscany’s highlights including Lucca, Pisa, Florence, and the coast.

A car is required for restaurants, shopping, and local amenities.

Santa Maria is ideally situated just 2.2km from the wonderful mediaeval town of Barga where you will find bars, good restaurants, gelaterias, shops, and often live music and markets under the stars. There is also a cathedral, plenty of interesting architecture, art galleries, a theatre, a Saturday morning market and lots of little piazzas for al fresco dining or for just watching the world go by.

If you drive into town it takes less than 5 minutes and during the day you can also walk into Barga cross country in around 20 minutes, crossing the stream bordering the property.

Closer to home there is a bar/restaurant just a 500M walk away.

If you wish to explore locally there is the market town of Castelnuovo, famous for its Thursday morning market just a 15 minute drive away, there is the fortress of Verrucole which you can reach in 35 minutes, the Buffardello zip wire park a half hour drive and the wind caves at Grotta del Vento just a half hour drive too. There are plenty of sleepy villages to visit, all with stunning mountain views and there are two National Parks too which provide fantastic hiking opportunities.

Visit the fully walled mediaeval City of Lucca in just 45 minutes and spend the day meandering or cycling along the ample walls, visiting some of the 99 churches, climbing various towers, designer shopping or people watching in one of the many Squares. Stay into the evening and watch a Puccini opera recital or dine in one of the many restaurants on offer.

Come in July and book for the Summer Festival - a fortnight of concerts from well known names -there has been Elton John, Simply Red, The Killers, Paolo Nutini, Ricky Martin (for a party!), The Rolling Stones, Robbie Willians, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, to name but a few... Most concerts take place in the Piazza Napoleone - an intimate and unique outdoor venue.

For other days out, the beach is just over an hour away, as is the city of Pisa, with Florence say a 1 hour 15 minute drive.
