  • Extraordinarily Comfortable and Refreshing

"Mango cottage offers an ideal retreat destination, not just a place to stay while visiting the Big Island. The spacious and beautifully maintained garden, with hot tub and private lawn area, includes an extraordinary variety of plantings that bloom year-round. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable and appealing in terms of the interior decor, layout, natural lighting, furnishings, kitchen appliances, bedding and bathroom provisions. We appreciated finding a variety of well-chosen beach equipment - towels, water shoes, snorkeling gear, folding chairs, etc. All of that is stored in a spacious and well-organized area under the porch, along with a washer and dryer. Drive time to downtown Kailua-Kona and Kona Airport is modest, about fifteen minutes to both areas, and well worth the trip, certainly much better - for those wanting relaxation time - than staying in the busy congestion of condos and hotels by the sea. As presented by the owners, Mango Cottage has a Buddhist ambience, inside and out, that would make it ideal for writing a book, renewing a marriage, or resting from a major project. Maybe the owner's commitment to rest and relaxation explains the complete lack of any beverages with caffeine (ie tea or coffee) in the other-wise well-stocked kitchen. That minor deficiency is my only criticism. Mango Cottage was so delightful that we drove away with high hopes of making a return visit. We will recommend it to all our friends."

  • Great "Base Camp" with a view!

"Wonderful condo close to the town of Kona. We stayed at the condo for 5 nights (April 14 -19, 2016). We walked to dinner every night. Great snorkeling spots pretty close by (you have to drive). Just south is Kahalu'u Beach Park (about 5 miles south of the condo). Way further down on route 160 is Two Step Beach (Honaunau Bay). We ate at Humpy's, On the Rocks, Lava Rock and Splashers Grill. Great sunsets at On the Rocks and Humpy's. We rented fantastic road bikes one day from Cycle Station (near Costco). Their number is 808-327-0087. Oliver was wonderful and very helpful. The road bike we did was about 18 miles on route 240. Stage out of Tex Drive-In in Honoka'a and head to Waipi'o Valley Overlook. The valley and views are spectacular! One day we drove north to Hapuna Beach State Park. Big beautiful sandy beach but the afternoon wind was horrendous and the waves were huge. Go early in the morning and if it is calm, they say it is great for snorkeling (bring boogie boards too just in case)!!! The condo had everything we needed, and was very comfortable. Nice view of the water and the pool from the lanai. Thanks so much. PS: Before going on vaca, buy the book Hawaii The Big Island Revealed by Andrew Doughty (7th edition). It is truly a fantastic guide book."

  • Best Island Vacation

"We felt at home from the moment we arrived. Vicki was friendly, gracious, and helpful from prior to booking right up through our visit. Mahalo! The house is spacious for friends and family, very clean, and the whole property is wonderfully private and homey. The hot tub grotto is beautiful. The pool is cold in February! The view is terrific from above the beaches and town and still the drive to everything is short. So many great beaches just 10-30 minutes drive, we could visit a new one everyday. Even Volcano National Park and sites on the other coast are just a couple of hours drive. There are plenty of supplies from beach towels, pool toys, boogie boards and snorkeling gear to pantry items and condiments. A trip to Costco and we had everything we needed to enjoy meals "at home" and pack lunches for our outings. So many things to do - just check the provided guidebook - or sit back and enjoy the island breezes. The malasadas at Tex drive-in Honokaa are worth the drive! A month was super relaxing and laid-back but at the same time too short. We could have stayed! Friends who visited were impressed and are planning to come back with their family."
