My wife and I stayed at Hale Mala Pua for our honeymoon. It is SO absolutely gorgeous! As much as I rant and rave about this homestay it won't do any justice until you have stayed here! Hale Mala Pua was absolutely wonderful and romantic! My wife especially loved the jetted jacuzzi tub with all the bubbles! It was a perfect place to come home too after a day of going on adventures around Kaua'i! Hale Mala Pua was very clean and very private. The only time we saw Holly and Rick is when we actually sought them out to ask a question. My wife and I actually wish we could have seen Rick and Holly more as they are such lovely people! Truly, our lives are richer now knowing Holly and Rick and all the animals! We wish we could have stayed one more night just to take Rick up on his offer to have a bonfire and chat more! Rick and Holly have so much knowledge about the island and so much love for each of their guests! This love, kindness and respect shows itself throughout your stay and will definitely make an impact on you when you leave, leaving you feeling more enriched and blessed for having these amazing people in your life! Hale Mala Pua was in an amazing location as well. We were only 10 minutes tops to the closest beach and the sports shack was such an amazing thing to have. I cannot tell you how much we saved not having to rent outdoor equipment for our activities! Such a huge bonus for anyone hoping to experience Kauai to the fullest!!!! The grounds are absolutely beautiful as well! It is so much more lush now, than the photos I am seeing while typing this review! SO BEAUTIFUL! Having the garden's was absolutely amazing too! I think we made orange juice every other day! SO GOOD! We could write pages and pages about how excellent our stay was at Hale Mala Pua! If you are considering vacationing in Kauai (for whatever reason) your search for a place to stay has ended! Don't hesitate and call Holly and Rick! You will not be disappointed in Hale Mala Pua! Holly and Rick, we cannot thank you enough for such a wonderful honeymoon! We will recommend Hale Mala Pua to anyone and everyone who wants to vacation in Kauai. We will definitely be coming back (hopefully in the near future). We have felt like we have made lifelong friends and we cannot wait until we can see you and the animals again. Much love and blessings to you all!!!Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

When we arrived at the property, we were taken aback by the stunning landscaping and fruit trees with the backdrop of giant, lush green mountains all around us. We were immediately welcomed by Holly and Rick- some of the warmest, kindest people we've ever met- and as if the outdoor beauty weren't enough, the interior of the Hale Mala Pua was completely charming. Cozy, elegant, clean, welcoming, and serene are just some of the words I would use to describe the comfort of the home. The other huge bonus of the property (for us- a young, adventurous, outdoorsy couple) was the "Sports Shack," which saved us the money and hassle of renting the gear we wanted to use. We highly recommend Hale Mala Pua to anyone traveling to Kauai who wants the secluded serenity of the mountains with easy access to the beach.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We really enjoyed our visit at Hale Mala Pua and it provided a great home away from home for our adventures on Kauai. If you want to explore the whole island without packing up and relocating during the week and you are looking for a place in "real Kauai" away from the "crowds" (such as they are on Kauai) and the resorts, this is the place! As soon as you meet Holly and Rick, they feel like family and will do whatever they can to make you feel at home. As animal lovers ourselves, we really enjoyed hanging out with their golden retriever, cats, and Lucy the pig! The only negative thing I can possibly come up with about our stay were the ants and mosquitoes (which seem to particularly like us) but that's life in the rainforest and Holly and Rick have remedies available as needed. Don't let that deter you, though, because you will be missing out (the other reviews are true)!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

My partner and I just returned from a wonderful week in Rick and Holly's incredible little cottage and we loved every minute of our stay. It is the most private accommodation we have ever stayed at right from the outdoor sunken jetted tub to the outdoor shower on the lanai. We are having a hard time adjusting to having to shower inside now that we are home! The house is located ideally both in terms of its proximity to the beaches, hikes and exploration that make Kapa'a the ideal area on Kauai to spend time and the gorgeous grounds it is located on. I know that this is largely due to the tireless work that Rick and Holly have done since they acquired this house. They are both such warm, sharing people, a large part of our enjoyment came from meeting and getting to know them. We enjoyed all the equipment in the Sport's Shack and loaded up the kayak one day and two bicycles on another day. Rick was most helpful both in loading these items and sharing info on where to use them. Get him to tell you about the amazing river kayak/waterfall adventure that Kim and I shared. Holly took us down to the waterfall directly behind the property, it is incredible. They really have created a "slice of paradise" and we would thoroughly recommend their hale to anyone.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

There is no matching anywhere the personal attention you will receive from Holly and Rick. Our flight was delayed and we arrived in Kauai very late. When we arrived, Rick had a delicious meal waiting for our hungry family of five. Rick and Holly were available and provided us with great tips about Kauai. We would text Holly with questions and she would promptly respond with very helpful information. We now consider them good friends and thank them for giving us an amazing week. Their home sits on an acre of gorgeous land with beautiful trees, an organic garden, and a waterfall. In the mornings we would sit and enjoy the surrounding mountains from lawn chairs in their yard. We would then pick oranges and avacados from their trees for morning smoothies. Their garden produced beautiful lettuce for salads. After a day out exploring we loved pulling into their driveway and coming back to such a peaceful location. The interior of the space was spotless and beautifully decorated with attention to detail, including fresh hawaiian flowers. We loved the lanai with a hottub to soak in and barbecue to fix our own meals. My three teenagers loved the outdoor hot shower on the lanai to wash off the sand from the beach. While the space was intimate, the five of us felt very comfortable. Their sports shack saved us time and money. We used boogie boards, surf boards, beach chairs, ice chests, water bottles, and other items. They provided bicycles to cycle along the new bike path down in Kapaa, just a few minutes away. Their location in Kapaa is ideal for exploring. One can easily get to the beaches on either the north shore or down to the south and westside beaches from Kapaa. The airport in Lihue is just a few minutes away too. We highly recommend Hale Mala Pua. You will have an intimate experience you would not otherwise have at a resort or hotel. When we return to this beautiful island, we will be calling Holly and Rick. Thank you again for such a rich experience.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

If we could give 10 stars we would. One just has to read all the reviews and it will tell you exactly how wonderful this place is! Kauai is such a beautiful island and having the opportunity to stay in this cottage cared for by these two special people just added to the beauty. We truly loved everything about it. Thank you so much Holly & Rick. You're actions and thoughts for putting others first is inspirational! Terry & ColleenDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My apologies to Holly and Rick for the delayed review. We've had a crazy year, but here it is: There are so many things to say about Hale Mala Pua and Holly and Rick. For the basics, the space we rented is actually attached to their home. The only shared space is a laundry room and the drive way and yard. We had no issues with the shared space, as stated in the description they will leave you alone if that is what you want! But, they are such wonderful people…how could we stay away?! We are a family of four, with a very active two year old, which made the space a bit cramped. We utilized the pull out couch which mostly took up the ‘living space’ when open. The kitchen counter area is on the smaller side, so I used that as my excuse not to cook ? You can definitely cook, though, and there is a grill outside. Lots of basics on hand and full size refrigerator for leftovers, etc. ANTS—heed the warning in the description. We are from Ohio, so the outdoor lanai area left us in awe! I’m not sure if it rains year-round at night, but during our stay we could not leave things hanging out overnight without it getting wet. During the day, perfect weather, so we couldn’t really complain, but something to keep in mind! Grounds—A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Talk about paradise! Although, mosquitos are rampant-bug spray is a must! Animals, fresh fruit, waterfall! Beauty EVERYWHERE! Holly and Rick—wow. Such wonderful, special, kind people. Notes slipped under our door by Holly, piping hot pineapple cake made by Rick, bonfire, history, island tips—you couldn’t ask for better hosts! And, they do all this without any pressure; you could easily have complete privacy. There is a sports shack filled with anything you can think of you might want or need for your trips out to explore the island. We cannot wait to make a return trip. I can’t imagine there would be a better place to stay.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

The cottage and property are even more beautiful than the photos depict - and the amenities were more than we expected, making us feel at home almost instantly. The cottage itself is lovely, and the small touches and attention to detail make it a peaceful space to spend some time on such a beautiful island. The private entrance to the lanai and outdoor HOT shower were super helpful when returning from the beach or a muddy hike. The grounds around the cottage make you feel completely secluded and private, and the option of getting fruits and veggies from the garden or beach gear and bikes on the property was an added perk! The cottage is super clean and well-maintained, and the property owners couldn't have been more nice and accommodating. I've already recommended this property to friends and family alike, and our stay has inspired us to return annually - not just to Kauai but Hale Mala Pua! The town of Kapaa is super accessible and convenient for quick grocery store trips or a stop at a Wednesday Farmer's Market. Staying on the east side of the island was a good idea too, as we were able to explore both the south and north shore in easy day trips. Basically, this place is a gem through and through, and we felt blessed to have been able to experience our first trip to Kauai in such a beautiful spot!Did you find this review helpful? We had an amazing time staying with Holly and Rick. My wife and I celebrated our 15th anniversary on Kauai and had a great time. Rick pointed us to some great places to visit and kayak. Holly had the place completely stocked with guide books and information and was a great host. We really enjoyed the "Sports Shack" (saved us some real $$) and the fresh fruit and veggies daily. The kitchen was perfect and we really enjoyed the outside shower and hot tub. We'd definitely stay here again. We were out and about the island so much, but we wished that we had more time to explore the grounds and take a dip in the pool below the waterfall.Did you find this review helpful? This incredibly charming cottage is even better than the description. It truly is a slice of paradise. Holly and Rick are the most attentive and gracious hosts you could ever hope for. The cottage is perfect, from the fully stocked kitchen to the romantic, private hot tub and shower. There were vases of fragrant, tropical flowers, candlelight, a comfy bed, guide books all waiting for us in the cottage. When we arrived, Rick gave us a tour of the gorgeous property until Holly flew out of the house to greet us with a huge hug as if we were old friends! They provided a wealth of information about all there is to see, do, eat, experience and explore on the island; and all kinds of sports equipment is available to the guests. We used the snorkling gear, beach chairs, umbrella, picnic cooler and big fluffy towels for our beach days. Rick and Holly clearly want to make their guests as comfortable as they possibly can down to the very last detail (including organic mosquito repellant!) We feasted on fresh papayas, bananas and vegetables from their garden every day. The animals (who all live outside) were an added treat. I loved feeding pineapple peels to Lucy the pig! It was an incredible, memorable experience and we can't wait to go back again.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
